The case studies were commissioned by the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), and examine failures of forest management in Britain (Bateman, I.), Sweden (Wibe, S.), Italy (Florio, M.), Germany (Bergen, V.; Behrndt, M.; Pfister, G.), and Spain (Campos Palacín, P.). The commonest causes of market failures related to non-competitive markets, external effects, incomplete information and demand/cost errors, and public goods. The commonest causes of intervention failures related to erroneous reasoning, group interest, and incomplete information

Integrated Geophysical Investigation of a Buried Roman Villa in Pompeii

In archaeological research non-invasive techniques are commonly used to characterize a site or part of it. Among them, geophysical surveying is a valuable, non-destructive tool for archaeologists in evaluating sites and guiding excavation programmes within already discovered sites. In this paper we describe the results of an integrated geophysical survey carried out over a buried Roman Villa in Via Nolana, Pompeii. The area was partially unearthed in 1985 showing the remnants of a villa from the first Imperial Age. The excavation found also some frescos and traces of rural activities. The remnants were successively earthed again. The survey included high-resolution Geoelectrical, Magnetometric, Seismic and Ground Penetrating Radar measurements. They were performed both over the known buried structures and in the unexplored area immediately adjacent to the remnants, with the aim of verifying the presence of other unearthed villa structures beyond the explored area. Data processing included advanced filtering techniques, such as Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT, Fedi & Florio, 2003), allowing an effective filtering of localized and directional noise. Furthermore, the use of multi-scale potentialfield techniques such as Enhanced Horizontal Derivative (EHD; Fedi & Florio, 2001) and Depth from Extreme Points (DEXP; Fedi, 2007) allowed positioning the lateral edges of the buried structures and characterizing their shape and depth. The results yielded by the different methods showed a rather good consistency in terms of position and size of the buried structures. Furthermore, the integration of the outcome of each geophysical technique reduced the intrinsic ambiguities of each method. Our interpretation revealed the presence of remnants in the unearthed area, in continuation of the already discovered section of the villa, and highlighted preferential areas for future archaeological diggings

Il progetto dell’immateriale per la valorizzazione delle identità culturali. L’ex Stabilimento Florio di Favignana

The name of the Florio is bound in an indissoluble bond, the Egadi Islands, purchased by Ignatius senior in 1874. Retrace the most significant in the history of this family means to account for a parable that, over a century, sees them from merchants emigrated, become protagonists of their time and decay into a golden sunset and tragic. After 2007 the tuna fishing by the method of slaughter is banned in Sicily. The establishment of Favignana Florio's once flourishing company fell into disuse, and today became a museum. Saved by physical deterioration and returned to its original grandeur, the former Florio Plant of Favignana has reopened to the public from September 2010 to host a project of excellence. In this context, the former Florio Plant represents a great opportunity, because, as a museum, it returns to the island its history and its culture (material). Here, the project has achieved remarkable results in the application of new technologies that make possible the construction of two highly communicative and challenging environments: the video installations “Torino” and “The Death Room”, both curated by Renato Alongi. In the great hall Turin (before hold), scenically obscured, 18 authors-stars appear on large format holographic screens. “The Death Room" plays the “mattanza” in a poetic way: underwater images of schools of tuna that swim among the networks still unaware of the fate that awaits them are projected in a sequence of large format screens

The “Ayde of his Muses?”The Renaissance of John Florio and William Shakespeare

Jeremy Lester’s essay focuses on John Florio, arguing a far deeper implication of the prominent linguist and translator of Montaigne in the production of the Shakespearean oeuvre than previously thought. Although known by specialists, until not long ago, Florio was considered a secondary figure within the intellectual and artistic panorama of the Elizabethan and Jacobean times. After examining closely the life and works of Florio in accordance with Lamberto Tassinari’s book John Florio. The Man Who Was Shakespeare (Giano Books, 2009), Lester discusses the case of British scholar Saul Frampton of Westminster University who in two feature articles published in the London Guardian in July and August, 2013, asserted that John Florio was the editor-in-chief of Shakespeare’s collected plays (the First Folio, 1623). According to Frampton, this role allowed him to “censor,”“change” or “supplement” the original works of Shakespeare. Ben Jonson, the main instigator in the publication of the First Folio, was also a close friend and devotee of Florio, of whom he states in a dedication to a copy of his Volpone, that he was “an Ayde of his Muses.” Analyzing Tassinari’s theory, Lester comes to the conclusion that Florio, more than the editor and “Ayde” to the Bard, has a very good claim to be considered the author under the pseudonym Shakespeare. Tassinari’s book, now translated into French with the title John Florio alias Shakespeare (Le Bord de L’Eau, 2016), is sparking an animated debate within the French media

A Framework for Trustworthiness Assessment based on Fidelity in Cyber and Physical Domains

    No full text
AbstractWe introduce a method for the assessment of trust for n-open systems based on a measurement of fidelity and present a prototypical implementation of a complaint architecture. We construct a MAPE loop which monitors the compliance between corresponding figures of interest in cyber- and physical domains; derive measures of the system's trustworthiness; and use them to plan and execute actions aiming at guaranteeing system safety and resilience. We conclude with a view on our future work
