It's the Way You Treat Me That Makes Me Angry, It's Not a Question of Madness: Good and Bad Practice In Dealing With Violence in the Mental Health Services
Accessible Summary
What is known on the subject:
• The first access to a mental health service is sometimes marked by aggressive be-
haviours and anger. Forced hospitalization is frequently an occasion for resistance
and hostility to the service, which should not be mistaken for psychotic symptoms.
• If this situation is not dealt with effectively, it can jeopardize the quality of the
relationship with staff and compliance with the treatment programme.
What the paper adds to existing knowledge:
• The narrator presents his experience in undergoing voluntary psychiatric treat- ment, casting light on nurses’ good and bad practices: those that increased resist- ance, and those that helped de-escalate the uncontrolled reaction at the time of access, as well as during the recovery period.
What are the implications for mental health nursing:
• Practitioners should be able to put in place listening techniques and ways of per- sonalizing the relationship with the patient.
• When such measures become part of the patient's meaning system, the vicious circle of misunderstood anger that creates more anger may be interrupted and the patient can invest in relationships of trust
Dynamics of the second order nonlinearity in thermally-poled silica-glass
We study the temporal evolution of the second-order nonlinearity in thermally poled silica-glass. Our results differ significantly from those reported so far for the ionic charge evolution and show strong dependencies on sample thickness
Análise da paisagem cultural do Sítio Arqueológico Turvo V-B
This work is the result of a study from the Archaeological Site Turvo V-B, located in the City of Pontes Gestal, SP. The site on screen is inserted within the limits of the River Basin Turvo/Grande, in the northern region of São Paulo. The aim of this work is the study of ceramic collection, in order to understand the regional system of occupation pre-colonial indigenous in the northern region of the State of São Paulo. Initially, we present the Ethno-history of the north of the State of São Paulo, identifying the first people who occupied this territory from the century XVII, which are owned by Tradition Aratu-Sapucaí. Next, we performed a Site Turvo V-B landscape analysis from the physical environment River Basin Turvo/Grande and the relationship between the preterit populations and the environment. The analysis of the ceramic material of the Site Turvo V-B was carried out from the methodological assumptions of Faccio (1992; 1998; 2011a). The author proposes the analysis of the technical and morphological-functional elements that subsequently enable digital reconstitution of the forms of ceramic vessels. Thus, it was possible to associate the Site Turvo V-B material culture in screen Regional Occupation System Aratu-Sapucaí, affiliated to the Cayapó Indians who inhabited the north of the State of São Paulo in the pre-colonial periodEsse trabalho é resultado de um estudo realizado a partir do Sítio Arqueológico Turvo V-B, localizado no Município de Pontes Gestal, SP. The Application of the Principle of Proportionality to Assess Compensation: some Reflections Arising from the Case of Joseph Charles Lemire v. Ukraine
In the last few years, the principle of proportionality has appeared with a certain frequency in international investment case law: arbitrators have employed it to determine whether the State’s regulatory measure under scrutiny represents a form of indirect expropriation, to assess violations of the fair and equitable treatment (‘FET’) standard, to counterbalance competing obligations drawn from international investment law and international human rights law, and to assess compensation. This article will focus on the so-called “quantum phase” – the part of the award devoted to the assessment of the monetary compensation due to the foreign investor for the breach of the investment treaty provision – and will discuss whether the principle of proportionality can effectively play a role in the assessment of compensation. The work will start from the analysis of the case of Joseph Charles Lemire v. Ukraine, where arbitrators expressly resorted to proportionality to verify whether the indemnity awarded to the claimant for the breach of the FET standard was adequate in light of the specific characteristics of the investment lato sensu and the investor, to then approach the issue of proportionality more in detail
Laser pulse analogues for gravity
Intense pulses of light may be used to create an effective flowing medium which mimics certain properties of black hole physics. It is possible to create the analogues of black and white hole horizons and a photon emission is predicted that is analogous to Hawking radiation. We give an overview of the current state of the art in the field of analogue gravity with laser pulses and of its implications and applications for optics.</p
Noncollinear Maker's fringe measurements of second-order nonlinear optical layers
A novel technique for characterising thin-film second-order nonlinearities with sub-micron resolution for the film depth is proposed. This method is substantially a variation of the classic one-beam Makers Fringe Technique and uses the second harmonic generated by two noncollinear fundamental beams. Compared to the one-beam case this configuration reduces the coherence length of the process, thus increasing the resolution for the nonlinear depth measurements. The technique has been implemented on thermally-poled silica samples, revealing the initial growth of the nonlinear region
When the non-sharing of therapeutic goals becomes the problem: The story of a consumer and his addiction to methadone
Mental health services typically follow standardized intervention protocols and systematic operating practices. This article explores what happens when a service relies exclusively on fixed practices rather than on the negotiation of objectives and the differentiation of procedures according to the needs of the user. The analysis of the narratives produced in first person by Oliver, a former substance user, emphasizes the need of constructing a therapeutic plan in close cooperation, promoting an user active role and strengthening his affiliation in the change process. In this specific case, the involvement of the user meant the identification of the peculiar meanings he attributed to the ‘substance of use’, which paradoxically coincided with the ‘therapeutic substance’ (methadone). Oliver’s story is an effective mirror for rethinking staff conduct when it assumes that the drug is therapeutic in itself, regardless of the way the person experiences and means it, it also offers a description of the interactive ways in which the relationship between a young person and service staff proved to be effectively therapeutic
Experimental quantum cosmology in time-dependent optical media
It is possible to construct artificial spacetime geometries for light by using intense laser pulses that modify the spatiotemporal properties of an optical medium. Here we theoretically investigate experimental possibilities for studying spacetime metrics of the form . By tailoring the laser pulse shape and medium properties, it is possible to create a refractive index variation that can be identified with . Starting from a perturbative solution to a generalized Hopfield model for the medium described by an , we provide estimates for the number of photons generated by the time-dependent spacetime. The simplest example is that of a uniformly varying that therefore describes the Robertson–Walker metric, i.e. a cosmological expansion. The number of photon pairs generated in experimentally feasible conditions appears to be extremely small. However, large photon production can be obtained by periodically modulating the medium and thus resorting to a resonant enhancement similar to that observed in the dynamical Casimir effect. Curiously, the spacetime metric in this case closely resembles that of a gravitational wave. Motivated by this analogy, we show that a periodic gravitational wave can indeed act as an amplifier for photons. The emission for an actual gravitational wave will be very weak but should be readily observable in the laboratory analogue
Two-beam noncollinear Makers fringe technique
A new technique to characterize second-order nonlinear films with sub-micron depth resolution is proposed. The potential of this method has been demonstrated in thermally-poled silica layers
Anorexia and Bulimia, Research and Therapies
This contribution critically reviews various theoretical and clinical models that have been applied to the study of eating disorders and, using a relational perspective, it provides an original and alternative conceptualization of the motivation for change. In particular, the author confronts the numerous philosophical, conceptual, diagnostic and treatment controversies that exist within the field in a very engaging and descriptive style and provide a new framework for treating eating disorders starting from a socio-costructionist perspective. The text is a highly theoretical and practical guide, it provides essential information for practitioners related to the experience of anorexia and bulimia in a concise and systematic manner. The sufferer’s perspective, diagnostic criteria, co-morbidity, biological concomitants of self-starvation; treatments approaches, outcome and prognosis are integrated with research and clinical findings.
The book presents an intellectually stimulating and informative exploration of the wide literature and includes a new intervention proposal
