Víra a hledání vlastní identity v dílech J. D. Salingera

    No full text
Práce rozebírá příčiny krize těchto postav, jejich snahu o hledání vlastní identity a současně určuje roli náboženství, víry a filozofie v tomto procesu. Existencialismus byl jako...The aim of this thesis is to study four characters in the works of the American Jewish author J.D. Salinger, namely in The Catcher in the Rye, Franny and Zooey, "Raise High the Roofbeam, Carpenters," "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" and "Teddy." The characters chosen for this thesis are Holden Caulfield, Franny Glass, Seymour Glass and Teddy McArdle. All these characters have found themselves at a critical point in their lives faced with questions about the meaning of life. They search for genuineness and struggle against "phoniness," to use Holden's favourite word, and do not feel content with the values set by the postwar American society. This thesis studies the reasons for their crises, their search for identity, together with its outcomes. It determines what role religion, faith and philosophy play in the process. The socio-cultural context of Salinger's work encourages questions about identity not only as a consequence of the confusion in identity and values brought about by the Second World War but also the tensions caused by the Cold War. Salinger's characters studied in this thesis are intellectuals who search for answers to existential questions in this period of change and as a result of not wanting to belong they alienate themselves from the society. This thesis examines the choice of...Department of Anglophone Literatures and CulturesÚstav anglofonních literatur a kulturFilozofická fakultaFaculty of Art

Antitrust Policy: A Century of Economic and Legal Thinking

    No full text
Passage of the Sherman Act in the United States in 1890 set the stage for a century of jurisprudence regarding monopoly, cartels, and oligopoly. Among American statutes that regulate commerce, the Sherman Act is unequaled in its generality. The Act outlawed "every contract, combination or conspiracy in restraint of trade" and "monopolization" and treated violations as crimes. By these open-ended commands, Congress gave federal judges extraordinary power to draw lines between acceptable cooperation and illegal collusion, between vigorous competition and unlawful monopolization. By enlisting the courts to elaborate the Sherman Act' s broad commands, Congress gave economists a singular opportunity to shape competition policy. Because the statute' s vital terms directly implicated economic concepts, their interpretation inevitably would invite contributions from economists. What emerged is a convergence of economics and law without parallel in public oversight of business. As economic learning changed, the contours of antitrust doctrine and enforcement policy eventually would shift, as well. This article follows the evolution of thinking about competition since 1890 as reflected by major antitrust decisions and research in industrial organization. We divide the U.S. antitrust experience into five periods and discuss each period' s legal trends and economic thinking in three core areas of antitrust: cartels, cooperation, or other interactions among independent firms; abusive conduct by dominant firms; and mergers.

Population density effects on gamete traits and fertilisation dynamics under varying sperm environments in mussels

    No full text
: Gamete traits can vary widely among species, populations and individuals, influencing fertilisation dynamics and overall reproductive fitness. Sexual selection can play an important role in determining the evolution of gamete traits with local environmental conditions determining the strength and direction of sexual selection. Here, we test for signatures of post-mating selection on gamete traits in relation to population density, and possible interactive effects of population density and sperm concentration on sperm motility and fertilisation rates among natural populations of mussels. Our study shows that males from high-density populations produce smaller sperm compared with males from low-density populations, but we detected no effect of population density on egg size. Our results also reveal that females from low-density populations tended to exhibit lower fertilisation rates across a range of sperm concentrations, although this became less important as sperm concentration increased. Variances in fertilisation success were higher for females than males and the effect of gamete compatibility between males and females increases as sperm concentrations increase. These results suggest that local population density can influence gamete traits and fertilisation dynamics but also highlight the importance of phenotypic plasticity in governing sperm-egg interactions in a highly dynamic selective environment

The private war of General Sherman

    No full text
Recognizing the growing interest in the psychological approaches to biographical studies, this thesis undertakes to examine the life of General William Tecumseh Sherman with an emphasis on its psychological components. An examination of his personal correspondence as well as a study of the recorded observations of his contemporaries provide clues which suggest tentative judgments concerning the enigmatic nature of his personality. Sherman's famous campaigns of destruction during the American Civil War have received both praise and condemnation. Yet, no less a polarity of response is found within the man himself. His early childhood was characterized by extreme docility and submission to the authority of his foster parents. Sherman's youth and early adulthood showed signs of sensitivity and insecurity. His early military career, beginning at West Point in 1836 and ending in California in l854, was unrewarding. His repeated attempts at civilian careers after his resignation from the army were marked by failure and frustration
