    Performance of the SABRE detector module in a purely passive shielding

    We present here a characterization of the low background NaI(Tl) crystal NaI-33 based on a period of almost one year of data taking (891 kg×\times days exposure) in a detector configuration with no use of organic scintillator veto. This remarkably radio-pure crystal already showed a low background in the SABRE Proof-of-Principle (PoP) detector, in the low energy region of interest (1–6 keV) for the search of dark matter interaction via the annual modulation signature. As the vetoable background components, such as 40^{40}K, are here sub-dominant, we reassembled the PoP setup with a fully passive shielding. We upgraded the selection of events based on a Boosted Decision Tree algorithm that rejects most of the PMT-induced noise while retaining scintillation signals with > 90% efficiency in 1–6 keV. We find an average background of 1.39 ± 0.02 counts/day/kg/keV in the region of interest and a spectrum consistent with data previously acquired in the PoP setup, where the external veto background suppression was in place. Our background model indicates that the dominant background component is due to decays of 210^{210}Pb, only partly residing in the crystal itself. The other location of 210^{210}Pb is the reflector foil that wraps the crystal. We now proceed to design the experimental setup for the physics phase of the SABRE North detector, based on an array of similar crystals, using a low radioactivity PTFE reflector and further improving the passive shielding strategy, in compliance with the new safety and environmental requirements of Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso

    Design of a Vanadium Redox Flow Battery

    In the past couple of centuries rapid industrialization and depletion of fossil fuels has increased the demand for renewable energy. Renewable energy is intermittent, e.g. solar energy is only available during the day. This prompts the need for efficient energy storage. Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFBs) provide a viable method to store energy. VRFBs store electrical energy by converting it to chemical energy via an oxidation-reduction reaction: Positive electrode: VO2+^{2+} + H2_{2}O ¿ VO2_{2}+ + 2H+^{+} + e¿^{¿} Negative electrode: V3+^{3+} + e¿^{¿} ¿ V2+^{2+} Redox flow batteries pump unreacted fluid through a cell, storing energy via this reaction. The positive and negative electrodes are separated by a Nafion membrane, which only allows transport of hydrogen ions. The reaction will occur near carbon felt, which will act as a means for electron transport (current collector). In a flow-through design, the fluid is forced to flow through the carbon felt current collector, as opposed to flowing past a current collector. This allows all of the fluid to come in contact with the felt, hopefully providing a higher rate of reaction. In a cell where the fluid flows past a current collector, some of the fluid would not come in contact with the current, thus impeding the reaction. The membrane used was Nafion 115. Impurities were removed by boiling for an hour in 3% hydrogen peroxide, an hour in deionized water, an hour in 0.5M H2SO4, then an hour in deionized water. The pump used to provide flow was a Masterflex L/S Peristaltic Tubing Pump. Electrolyte was pumped continuously at 50 mL/min. Raw building materials used to fabricate the cells were purchased from McMaster Carr. These included: LDPE, HDPE, Stainless Steel, Corrosion-Resistant Nickel, and Corrosion Resistant Viton Fluoroelastomer Rubber. The carbon felt used as the electrode was purchased from CeraMaterials. Simple test schedules were run and recorded using Arbin Instruments¿ MITS Pro software. The electrolyte was charged with a constant voltage of 1.7V, because this voltage is high enough to drive the oxidation-reduction reaction, while not high enough to drive the electrolysis of water. Then a load was applied allowing the cell to discharge. We were not able to achieve conclusive results. When testing the fuel cell, the charging section of the schedule would progress smoothly, but when the discharge began the system encountered an error. We cannot be certain that charging occurred. Even though we were unsuccessful in testing, we were successful in designing a leak free fuel cell. Given more time, we would try to investigate the reason why testing does not perform as expected

    The sabre experiment

    The dark matter interpretation of the DAMA/LIBRA annual modulation signal represents a long-standing open question in astroparticle physics. The SABRE experiment aims to test such claim, bringing the same detection technique to an unprecedented sensitivity. Based on ultra-low background NaI(Tl) scintillating crystals like DAMA, SABRE features a liquid scintillator Veto system, surrounding the main target, and it will deploy twin detectors: one in the Northern hemisphere at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Italy and the other in the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory (SUPL), Australia, first laboratory of this kind in the Southern hemisphere. The first very-high-purity crystal produced by the collaboration was shipped to LNGS in 2019 for characterization. It features a potassium contamination, measured by mass spectroscopy, of the order of 4 ppb, about three times lower than DAMA/LIBRA crystals. The first phase of the SABRE experiment is a Proof-of-Principle (PoP) detector featuring one crystal and a liquid scintillator Veto, at LNGS. This contribution will present the results of the stand-alone characterization of the first SABRE high-purity crystal, as well as the status of the PoP detector, commissioned early in the summer of 2020

    The sense of a beginning : Bakhtinian dialogic criticism on 'the gospel' in Mark.

    Contemporary literary approaches have caused paradigm shifts in Biblical Studies in the last two decades as it appears in a great deal of Markan studies using narrative, reader-response, deconstructive, feminist, and new historicist approaches. However, literary studies on the Gospel of Mark have not taken into account theoretical questions underlying those approaches. As a result biblical critics are driven by new trends without ever having a chance to examine the critical baggage of the approaches. Consequently, there is a gap of communication between the old and the new one. Therefore this thesis is an attempt to meet the need of enhancing the quality of critical endeavour in biblical studies. In the light of most recent competing critical theories of literature, the first contribution of this thesis is the methodological finding that Bakhtinian dialogic criticism contains the most profound philosophical and practical foundations for solving some crucial theoretical problems in contemporary literary theories. It is a critique to a Saussurian linguistic system of language which becomes the very foundation of modern and postmodern literary criticism. Bakhtinian literary theory shifts the foundation of literary criticism on linguistic signs into the creative activity of the socio-cultural production of human communication. The shift into socio-cultural reality of language communication makes the notion of 'genre' very important to unlock the problem of text and context in literary studies. Since the Gospel of Mark has fascinated most literary critics in Biblical Studies, the problem of 'genre' of this gospel is chosen as the focus of this study. Secondly, as no agreement is reached as to what 'genre' the Gospel of Mark belongs, this thesis makes its contribution to the discussion by locating the problem of 'genre' of Mark in the context of genre theories and argues that the Bakhtinian suggestion to find genre in the socio-cultural sphere by analysing artistic intercourse between narrative agents in Mark has freed the competing analysis from the unresolved problem between the kerygmatic (content oriented) approach and the analogical (form oriented) approach. To achieve finding 'genre' in the socio-cultural sphere, this thesis focuses on Bakhtinian analysis of the process of artistic intercourse between narrative agents. The narrative communicative interrelationships between narrative agents is constructed in this thesis as a 'stereophonic' Bakhtinian model of dialogic communication. This model is an original contribution of this thesis for revising the traditional two dimensional model of narrative communication. Based on this dialogical model of communication, a special role is given to the Bakhtinian 'author-creator' in the realization process of genre through the interaction of polyphonic voices. Through the interaction of voices of the author-artist and the hero we are led to discover a relatively stable type of portraying and controlling reality in Mark, known as the genre of Roman 'satire'. The closest literary affinity is Satyrica by Petronius. This narrative strategy of 'satire' in Mark has its root in the prophetic discourse of the Old Testament which is saturating the speech of the narrator, John the Immerser, the centurion, the people, and even Jesus. Finally, the whole search for Markan 'genre' culminates in the analysis of the realization of genre through the analysis of Bakhtinian chronotope. The reality of the genre of Mark is its social reality that is in its role as dpxrj/ 'beginning'. As the Gospel of Mark proclaims itself as 'a beginning', it defines its claim of socio-cultural 'authority' in early Christianity. It is this 'sense of beginning' which enables the narrating and the narrated world of Mark to interact dialogically

    Sex differences in risk factors for cardiovascular disease: the PERU MIGRANT study.

    INTRODUCTION: Although men and women have similar risk factors for cardiovascular disease, many social behaviors in developing countries differ by sex. Rural-to-urban migrants have different cardiovascular risk profiles than rural or urban dwellers. The objective of this study was to evaluate the sex differences with specific cardiovascular risk factors in rural-to-urban migrants. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used the rural-to-urban migrant group of the PERU MIGRANT cross-sectional study to investigate the sex differences in specific cardiovascular risk factors: obesity, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, as well as exposures of socioeconomic status, acculturation surrogates and behavioral characteristics. Logistic regression analysis was used to characterize strength of association between sex and our outcomes adjusting for potential confounders. The sample of migrants was 589 (mean age 46.5 years) and 52.4% were female. In the adjusted models, women were more likely to be obese (OR=5.97; 95%CI: 3.21-11) and have metabolic syndrome (OR=2.22; 95%CI: 1.39-3.55) than men, explaining the greatest variability for obesity and metabolic syndrome but not for hypertension. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that interventions for CVD in Peru should be sex-specific and address the unique health needs of migrant populations living in urban shantytowns since the risk factors for obesity and metabolic syndrome differ between males and females
