    High Pressure Study of Pu0.92Am0.08 Binary Alloy

    The phase transitions (by means of x-ray diffraction) and electrical resistivity of a Pu0.92Am0.08 binary alloy were determined under pressure (up to 2 GPa). The evolution of atomic volume with pressure gives detailed information concerning the degree of localization of 5f electronic states and their delocalization process. A quasi-linear V = f (P) dependence reflects subtle modifications of the electronic structure when P increases. The electrical resistivity measurements reveal the very high stability of the d phase for pressures less than 0.7 GPa, since no martensitic-like transformation occurs at low temperature. Remarkable electronic behaviours have also been observed.     We analyze the effects of three alternative proposals to reform the taxation of families relative to the current German system of joint taxation of couples and child allowances: a French-type family splitting and two full family splitting proposals. The empirical analysis of the effects of these proposals on the income distribution and on work incentives is based on a behavioral micro-simulation model which integrates an empirical household labor supply model into a detailed tax-benefit model based on the German Socio Economic Panel. Our simulation results show that under each reform the lion's share of the reduction in taxes would accrue to families with children in the upper part of the income distribution, and that expected labor supply effects are small for all analyzed family tax splitting reforms, both in absolute terms and relative to the implied fiscal costs.Household Taxation, Income Distribution, Work Incentive, Microsimulation

    Estimated Risk of HIV Acquisition and Practice for Preventing Occupational Exposure: A Study of Healthcare Workers at Tumbi and Dodoma Hospitals, Tanzania.

    Health care workers (HCWs) are at risk of acquiring human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV) and other infections via exposure to infectious patients' blood and body fluids. The main objective of this study was to estimate the risk of HIV transmission and examine the practices for preventing occupational exposures among HCWs at Tumbi and Dodoma Hospitals in Tanzania. This study was carried out in two hospitals, namely, Tumbi in Coast Region and Dodoma in Dodoma Region. In each facility, hospital records of occupational exposure to HIV infection and its management were reviewed. In addition, practices to prevent occupational exposure to HIV infection among HCWs were observed. The estimated risk of HIV transmission due to needle stick injuries was calculated to be 7 cases per 1,000,000 HCWs-years. Over half of the observed hospital departments did not have guidelines for prevention and management of occupational exposure to HIV infections and lacked well displayed health and safety instructions. Approximately, one-fifth of the hospital departments visited failed to adhere to the instructions pertaining to correlation between waste materials and the corresponding colour coded bag/container/safety box. Seventy four percent of the hospital departments observed did not display instructions for handling infectious materials. Inappropriate use of gloves, lack of health and safety instructions, and lack of use of eye protective glasses were more frequently observed at Dodoma Hospital than at Tumbi Hospital. The poor quality of the hospital records at the two hospitals hampered our effort to characterise the risk of HIV infection acquisition by HCWs. Greater data completeness in hospital records is needed to allow the determination of the actual risk of HIV transmission for HCWs. To further reduce the risk of HIV infection due to occupational exposure, hospitals should be equipped with sufficient personal protective equipment (PPE) and HCWs should be reminded of the importance of adhering to universal precautions

    A nano-particle synthesis technology dedicated to solar cells applications

    Silver nanoparticles have been prepared using a "terminated gas condensation" technique. An unprecedented control of 5-6 nm-size nanoparticles with well defined shape and variable surface densities has been achieved. The technology is shown to permit independent control of both, plasmon resonance intensity and frequency position. On the basis of optical measurements, a smart tuning of plasmon resonance intensity with particle density is indeed demonstrated. Moreover, the embedding of NPs in different surrounding medium enables to control the resonance wavelength as experimentally demonstrated and theoretically confirmed. © (2011) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.LMT
