The effectiveness of nurses’ psychosocial interventions for sensory deprivation in intensive care patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness of nurses’ psychosocial interventions for addressing sensory deprivation in intensive care units (ICUs). Materials and methods: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, CİNAHL, Embase, Cochrane Library, and YÖK Thesis Center databases was conducted from August 2023 to May 2024, without any temporal restrictions. In addition, a physical search was made in the university library for grey literature. Results: The study revealed that nurses’ psychosocial interventions significantly improved patients’ level of consciousness (SMD = 1.042, %95 CI = 0.716 to 1.369; Z = 6.25; p <.05) and sleep quality in ICUs (SMD=1.21, 95% CI= 0.232 to 1.810; Z = 2.49; p <.05). The effectiveness of psychosocial interventions varied based on the type of intervention, patient age, ICU type, patient group, and intervention duration. Notably, auditory stimuli and aromatherapy demonstrated particularly high effect sizes, significantly enhancing patients’ levels of consciousness and sleep quality. Conclusion: In conclusion, psychosocial interventions aimed at reducing sensory deprivation in intensive care units exert beneficial effects on individuals, notably enhancing their level of consciousness and improving sleep quality. © The Author(s) 2024
Disease burden and symptom management in type 2 diabetic patients: A phenomenological study
Aim: This study was conducted to address the experiences of diabetic patients from a psychosocial perspective, examine the burden of disease, and determine their practices for symptom management. Materials and Methods: In this study, a phenomenological research design, a qualitative research design, was used. The study included 20 diabetic patients. Individual and face-to-face interviews were performed, and Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis method was used to analyze the data. Results: As a result of the data analysis, four categories (challenges with care and treatment, coping with the disease, effects, and healthy life behaviors) and eleven main themes (knowledge, application, symptoms, support resources, spiritual coping methods, physical coping methods, physical effects, spiritual effects, social effects, physical practices, and psychological practices) emerged. Conclusion: It was concluded that the disease burden of diabetic patients is intense and that the participants of the study were not effective in coping with the disease through symptom management and found spirituality important in coping. © 2024 The Author(s). The effect of motivational interviewing on quality of life and self-efficacy behaviors of individuals with chronic illness: A meta-analysis study
Objective: This study aims to reveal the effect of the motivational interviewing on the quality of life and self-efficacy behaviors of individuals with chronic diseases. Material-method: For this meta-analysis study, PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, and YÖK Theses databases were searched in January–May 2021 without year limitation. As a result, 38 studies were included in the study: 23 for the quality of life variable, and 21 for the self-efficacy behaviors variable (in 6 studies, both variables were examined together). The data were synthesized with meta-analysis and narrative methods. The total sample size of the studies is 25,425. Results: This meta-analysis study showed that the motivational interviewing applied to individuals with chronic diseases changed their quality of life (SMD: 0.296, %95 CI: 0.054–0.537, Z = 2.402, p =.016, I2= %95). The type of chronic disease, measurement tool, sample group, disease group, age range, and whether the motivational interviewer was a nurse or not changed the effect size of the motivational interviewing on the quality of life. The self-efficacy score average of the experimental group to which motivational interviewing was applied was statistically similar to that of the control group (SMD: 0.141, %95 CI: −0.065, 0.347; Z = 1.346, p =.178, I2= %87). Conclusions: As a result of the meta-analysis, it was determined that the use of motivational interviewing increased the quality of life level of individuals with chronic diseases. However, it is thought that more research is needed because some studies were conducted with small sample size and prepost test design. The results of the study may provide guidance on the interventions to be used in improving the quality of life of individuals with chronic diseases. © 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC
Ethical Dilemmas and Coping Experiences of Nurses Caring for Patients With Hematologic Cancer: A Phenomenological Study
The study aimed to evaluate the ethical dilemmas faced by nurses who provide care to patients with hematologic cancer and determine their coping mechanisms using a phenomenological approach. This qualitative study was conducted with 35 nurses employed in clinics specializing in hematologic cancer patient care, living in diverse regions of Turkey, using semistructured, in-depth interviews through the WhatsApp mobile application. The snowball sampling technique was utilized to identify participants, and interviews continued until data saturation was achieved. All interviews were recorded and subsequently transcribed. Data analysis was conducted using Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis method, with the study adhering to the COREQ (Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research) checklist for reporting. In the analysis of the data, 2 categories (ethical dilemma situations and coping experiences) and 6 subthemes (treatment, care, professional values and beliefs, emotions, struggling with emotional burdens, and psychosocial approach) emerged. According to the results, nurses responsible for hematologic cancer patients struggle with ethical dilemmas in healthcare delivery and face challenges in effectively addressing them, which could potentially impact the quality of healthcare provided by nurses.3908880
Investigation of perceived parental attitude in children exposed to sexual abuse: A case-control study
Background: The enduring impact of children being subjected to sexual abuse is characterized by lasting traumatic effects. Aims: This study aims to assess the influence of perceived parental attitudes on the incidence of sexual abuse in children who have experienced such abuse, comparing them with a control group. Methods: The research took place at the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) of a hospital in northern Turkey and in the pediatric outpatient clinics of the same institution. The study evaluated 101 children who were exposed to sexual abuse and 100 children who were not. Data collection took place between November 2022 and August 2023. The study employed a ‘Descriptive Information Form’ and the ‘Parental Attitude Scale’ for both case and control groups. The t-test for independent samples, descriptive statistics, and logistic regression analysis were used for data analysis. Results: Analysis of scores from the Parental Attitude Scale revealed significantly lower mean scores in acceptance-involvement and strictness-supervision in the case group (p <.05). The mean scores for ‘acceptance-involvement’ (X¯ = 22.82 ± 6.26, X¯ = 25.71 ± 3.89) were highest in the case and control groups. Neglectful attitude (38.6%) was more prevalent in the case group, while the control group exhibited a higher frequency of democratic attitude (37%). In terms of predictors, acceptance-involvement (OR = 1.091, p =.005) and maternal employment (OR = 4.410, p <.001) were identified as the most significant predictors of exposed to sexual abuse. The study’s Cronbach’s alpha value for the scale was α =.743. Conclusion: The study’s findings on parental attitudes suggest a potential connection between children’s exposure to sexual abuse and inadequate parental acceptance, involvement, supervision, and control. © The Author(s) 2024

Objective: To evaluate the perspective of nurses in Turkey towards the global climate crisis and its impact on mental health using a qualitative approach.
Materials and method: This study was conducted from August to September 2023 with 35 nurses living in seven regions of Turkey using an inductive qualitative approach. The researchers employed the snowball sampling method to select participants. Interviews with the participants were conducted until data saturation was reached. Thematic analysis was used to emerge themes.
Results: The findings revealed five main themes (perception of the global climate crisis, effects of the global climate crisis, effects of the global climate crisis on mental health, reflections of the global climate crisis on nursing and nurses' views on prevention and intervention studies for the global climate crisis). Also, the findings revealed 12 sub-themes (physical outcomes, mental outcomes, direct and indirect impacts, psychosocial effects and personal, national and international-based reflections).
Conclusion: Our study indicates that nurses exhibit genuine concern for the global climate crisis and experience psychological effects related to this pressing environmental issue. Nurses are keenly aware of their responsibility to safeguard the planet and demonstrate a strong sense of concern for the state of the world.
Impact: It is evident that nurses, being prominent advocates for sustainability, are cognizant of their responsibility to protect the planet and demonstrate genuine apprehension for the state of the world.
Implications: Nurses play a crucial role, as they make up 60% of the global healthcare workforce and are often the frontline healthcare professionals during natural disasters. It is vital to elucidate and clarify the terminology concerning the relationship between the climate crisis and the mental health of nurses, to determine the scope of this relationship and to make recommendations for future research areas.

Experiences of Turkish mothers of children with autism: a phenomenological study
The study aimed to explore mothers’ experiences of children with autism using a phenomenological approach. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 18 parents with children attending a special education centre in a northern province of Turkey. Criterion sampling, a form of purposive sampling, was employed to select participants. Interviews continued until data saturation was achieved. All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was utilized to analyze the data, and the study adhered to the COREQ checklist for reporting qualitative research. As a result of analyses, three main themes (the process of diagnosis, the effect of the child’s illness on parents and their challenges over time, and considerations regarding the child’s educational journey) and eight sub-themes (feelings and thoughts, reflections on the causes, reactions encountered, emotional effects, social effects, physical effects, perception of social support, and expectations from the educator and the education process) emerged. The study concluded that mothers of children with autism are emotionally, physically, and socially impacted by their child’s condition, facing considerable challenges in coping. In light of these findings, it is recommended that policymakers in our country develop plans that address the difficulties expressed by participants, review and potentially enhance financial and social support for families, and consider increasing special education hours. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024
Disease Burden and Sexual Life Experiences of Individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Phenomenological Study
This study aimed to examine the disease burden encountered by individuals with COPD, with a comprehensive investigation of the effect of the disease on sexual life. In this study, a phenomenological research design, a qualitative research type, was employed. The study involved 36 individuals diagnosed with COPD. The data collection process involved conducting individual, face-to-face interviews. Colaizzi’s phenomenological analysis method was utilized for the data analysis. The analysis of the data yielded two categories (burdens of the disease and sexual life) and six primary themes (physical effects, mental effects, social effects, difficulties during sexual activity, the spouse’s perspective on the problems, and dealing with sexual problems). The outcomes of this study highlighted the significant burden of COPD on patients and its adverse impact on their sexual lives. Given the complex nature of COPD, a thorough and professional assessment of patients’ sexual well-being, coupled with timely identification of sexual dysfunctions and appropriate interventions, is of utmost importance. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature
