Bees collect polyurethane and polyethylene plastics as novel nest materials

    No full text
Plastic waste pervades the global landscape. Although adverse impacts on both species and ecosystems have been documented, there are few observations of behavioral flexibility and adaptation in species, especially insects, to increasingly plastic-rich environments. Here, two species of megachilid bee are described independently using different types of polyurethane and polyethylene plastics in place of natural materials to construct and close brood cells in nests containing successfully emerging brood. The plastics collected by each bee species resembled the natural materials usually sought; Megachile rotundata, which uses cut plant leaves, was found constructing brood cells out of cut pieces of polyethylene-based plastic bags, and Megachile campanulae, which uses plant and tree resins, had brood cells constructed out of a polyurethane-based exterior building sealant. Although perhaps incidentally collected, the novel use of plastics in the nests of bees could reflect ecologically adaptive traits necessary for survival in an increasingly human-dominated environment. We thank Dr. Laurence Packer, Sheila Dumesh, Bahar Salehi and Erik Glemser for comments and discussion for the manuscript. Funding was provided by Dr. Packer’s NSERC Discovery Grant and an NSERC-CGS awarded to the first author. J. S. MacIvor conceived and implemented the study, found the bee nests and reared the larvae. A. E. Moore analyzed the M. campanulae cells. J. S. MacIvor compiled and wrote the manuscript, A. E. Moore collaborated on the methods. A. E. Moore provided the graphs for the figures. J. S. MacIvor imaged the brood cells. Both authors critically revised the manuscript and approved it for publication. Publication was made possible by the York University Libraries' Open Access Author Fun

Alan Moore Comics as Performance, Fiction as Scalpel

Eclectic British author Alan Moore (b. 1953) is one of the most acclaimed and controversial comics writers to emerge since the late 1970s. He has produced a large number of well-regarded comic books and graphic novels while also making occasional forays into music, poetry, performance, and prose. In Alan Moore: Comics as Performance, Fiction as Scalpel , Annalisa Di Liddo argues that Moore employs the comics form to dissect the literary canon, the tradition of comics, contemporary society, and our understanding of history. The book considers Moore's narrative strategies and pinpoints the main thematic threads in his works: the subversion of genre and pulp fiction, the interrogation of superhero tropes, the manipulation of space and time, the uses of magic and mythology, the instability of gender and ethnic identity, and the accumulation of imagery to create satire that comments on politics and art history. Examining Moore's use of comics to scrutinize contemporary culture, Di Liddo analyzes his best-known works-- Swamp Thing, V for Vendetta, Watchmen, From Hell, Promethea , and Lost Girls . The study also highlights Moore?s lesser-known output, such as Halo Jones, Skizz , and Big Numbers , and his prose novel Voice of the Fire. Alan Moore: Comics as Performance, Fiction as Scalpel reveals Moore to be one of the most significant and distinctly postmodern comics creators of the last quarter-century.Intro -- Contents -- Preface and Acknowledgments -- Introduction -- CHAPTER 1. Neden Vejetaryenim

    J. Howard Moore's Neden Vejetaryenim (Why I Am a Vegetarian) is a striking manifesto that elevates vegetarianism from a mere dietary choice to an evolutionary and ethical foundation. Based on Darwinian evolutionary theory, the author emphasizes the biological and emotional kinship humans share with other animals, advocating for the principle of "Universal Kinship". Moore characterizes the exploitation of animals for food or entertainment as a crime akin to the slavery historically imposed on humans, arguing that the "Golden Rule" should be expanded to encompass all living beings. The book supports the argument that humans are not anatomically carnivorous and that a plant-based diet is superior both physiologically and economically, citing examples like the endurance of Turkish porters and Suez Canal workers. The work harshly critiques the brutality of slaughterhouses and the moral contradiction between human claims of "mercy" and meat consumption, inviting the reader to a fairer and more compassionate life.J.

Do UK based weight management programmes cause weight loss maintenance in adults? A systematic review

    No full text
The aim of this dissertation was to examine whether UK based weight management programmes promote weight loss maintenance (follow up of 12 months to assess effectiveness of intervention in weight loss) in adults through the process of a systematic review. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has described obesity as a "global epidemic". Weight management comprises two phases; weight loss and weight loss maintenance. The latter phase is the true goal for obesity and the most difficult element of weight management to achieve. However much less is know about this as compared with the weight loss phase. There is little purpose in committing time and money to reducing obesity if the weight is regained. This is counter-productive and weight loss maintenance is essential to combat the obesity epidemic. Searches were made for relevant information from a variety of scientific online databases and journals,. Seven articles met the inclusion criteria and were analysed in the review. All studies incorporated a multi-component (diet, exercise, behaviur modification) intervention approach. All control and internvetion groups reported weight loss at 12 months when compared with baseline. All groups recieved an intervention. One study reported a significant difference (P<0.05) between groups. Four studies reported on at least one component (diet, physical activity, behaviour modification) however there was not enough information to conclude whether they complied with national guidelines (NICE CG43 and SIGN 115). High attrition rates and loss to follow up are problematic for each study except one. Analysis on an intention to treat basis was common however this is problematic and there are alternative methods which may be more suitable for dealing with missing data

Relationship between quantitative real-time PCR cycle threshold and culture for detection of Streptococcus equi subspecies equi.

Objective To compare PCR and culture results for the detection of Streptococcus equi subspecies equi (S. equi). Animals Respiratory tract samples (N = 158) from horses being tested for S. equi. Procedure Bacterial culture was carried out on samples from which S. equi was detected by quantitative real-time PCR. Results S. equi was isolated from 12 (7.6%) samples: 4/9 (44%) samples when the PCR cycle threshold (CT) was ≤ 30, 7/30 (23%) when the CT was 30.1 to 35, and 1/119 (0.8%) when the CT was 35.1 to 40. The highest CT sample from a sample that yielded a positive culture was 36.9. The optimal Youden’s J value was at a CT of 34.2, the same value as determined by number needed to misdiagnose when the cost of a false negative is deemed to be either 5 or 10 × that of a false positive. Conclusions Viable S. equi was only detected in a minority of quantitative PCR (qPCR) positive samples. A qPCR CT of 34.2 was a reasonable breakpoint for likelihood of the presence of culturable S. equi. Clinical relevance Evaluation of CT values may be useful as a proxy to indicate the likelihood of cultivable S. equi being present and could be useful as part of risk assessments.journal article2023 JunimportedEquine Guelp
