Paolo de Matteis e la Spagna

    No full text
2019 - 2020This research analyses, with unpublished documents, the artistic career of Paolo de Matteis, an interesting personality in the Neapolitan painting, active between the 17th and 18th centuries, in order to reconstruct and integrate the knowledge related to his Spanish painting production, until today neglected by previous studies, but in fact it is well developed for his whole career and continued without interruptions. From the review of the sources, even considering new documentary and territorial researches, it has been possible to show the strong relationship between the painter and the viceroys, and to introduce new and important commissions, aiming to show his artistic personality which was part of the cultural context and to increase the number of his works. .. .. The Labyrinth under Ash Tree Lane. Dwelling in Mark Z. Danielewski’s House of Leaves

    No full text
Mark Z. Danielewski's 2000 novel House of Leaves revolves around a mysterious building that hides an apparently infinite subterranean labyrinth of supernatural origin. Through various typographic techniques that creatively leverage on the space of the printed page as a complex visual devices and textual artifices meant to create atmospheric effects, the author establishes what could be defined as a spatial condition. The reader’s experience is thus not neutral, since it deeply engages the embodied and affective spheres. In this paper, the analysis and discussion of these devices describes how, under some specific circumstances, the spatial dimension embedded in literature can indeed become inhabitable, sustaining the emergence of dwelling practices

Full-envelope robust control of a shrouded-fan unmanned vehicle

    No full text
The development is described of a rate-command system for the control of a novel unmanned vehicle, the baseline model of which is highly nonlinear and presents fast and unstable open-loop modes. Structured singular-value design methodology is used to achieve the desired command response characteristics under specified uncertainties taking into consideration typical problems of small-size helicopters and ducted-fan vehicles such as rate-limited servos and significant time delays. Two robust linear controllers are designed for the low- and high-speed subsets of the operating envelope, and full-envelope flight control is achieved by switching between controllers as the threshold airspeed is traversed. Following an analysis of scaling effects, controller performance is evaluated against rotorcraft handling-qualities specifications. Flight control system development is assessed by piloted, hardware-in-the-loop simulation in the full range of operating conditions, with the controller implemented in the flight computer and pilot commands transmitted to the vehicle via radio link. Simulation testing also shows that the control system has good turbulence gust rejection performance and is robust to significant variations of c.g. position

The work of Paolo De Matteis is mainly in Naples, yet he leaves in Puglia important testimonies: for example the vault of the chaplain of San Cataldo in Taranto and altarpiece in numerous churches. In Bisceglie there is a Coronation of the Virgin and Saints in the diocesan museum, commissioned by Bishop Pompey Sarnelli. The study of this work outlined comparative relationships with sculpture, in particular with that of Gaetano Patalano, author of a Coronation of the Virgin and Saints for Cadiz

Atmospheres of Dwelling. Phenomenologies of “Being-at-Home”

    No full text
First introduced by Martin Heidegger in his later philosophical work, over the decades the concept of dwelling has acquired a fundamental importance in architectural theory. Its “classic” status, however, along with its centrality in postmodern architecture, has largely prevented the unfolding of an open discussion on the present-day validity of this notion. Similarly, the work of another cult author such as Gaston Bachelard, whose book The Poetics of Space is equally revered as a classic, appears to be uncritically espoused outside of a proper contextualization. While dwelling does represent a fundamental driver of human presence in the world, these two primary accounts and their implications in design should be discussed against other complementary or antagonistic models, such as those proposed by Deleuze and Guattari, Sloterdijk and Schmitz. Each of these authors defines his position vis-à-vis Heidegger’s original proposal, while opening to different repercussions on the practices of design

Ethics of dust:visual essay on the artistic works by Jorge Otero-Pailos

    No full text
The works of artist and preservation architect Jorge Otero-Pailos on experimental preservation provoke deep reflections about some of the fundamental questions dealing with heritage: temporality of objects, changeability of inscribed cultural values, the greater purpose of architectural preservation as a cultural practice, and the societal role of an architect and preservationist in formulating narratives around heritage. As the artistic installations featured in this visual essay — The Ethics of Dust (2014–2016) and Watershed Moment (2020) — demonstrate, Jorge Otero-Pailos combines various elusive elements, such as water sounds and dust, to conceive meditative and contemplative spaces. His installations invite visitors to pause and reflect on the memories, both personal, social, and environmental, that define each of us; they probe deep into the past and deep into the future.Since these are some of the issues we wanted to explore in this special issue, ‘Embodiment and Meaning-making: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Heritage Architecture’, we invited various artists and scholars to write a very short caption in reaction to the images provided by the author through one of these three ‘lenses’:- affect, embodied experience, atmosphere;- politics of heritage;- processes of meaning-making.The results reveal the power of images to provoke imagination through atmospheric and embodied experiences, and the power of experimental heritage work to convey (political) meaning across distance and different analogue or digital media. This visual essay includes contributions from (in order of appearance): Tenna Doktor Olsen Tvedebrink, Federico De Matteis, Michael Hirschbichler, Jovana Popić, Maria De Piedade Ferreira, Uta Pottgiesser, Marcus Weisen and Brady Wagoner, with an epilogue from Jorge Otero-Pailos.Situated ArchitectureHeritage & Technolog

Atmospheric assemblages: the affective space of adaptive reuse

    No full text
Purpose Adaptive reuse entails the physical modification of abandoned architectural structures, with the activation of processes and practices leading to the re-incorporation of heritage into the contemporary life of communities. This transformation entails an affective adaptation, a re-modulation of how citizens attune to a built environment that has been returned to urban, shared forms of use. By observing the emotional ties that are established between subjects and the spaces they inhabit, affecting forms of dwelling, attachments and corporeal responses, the author can clarify how adaptation purports this affective modification, where the original ambiance is not necessarily altogether overwritten, but may rather merge with the supervening situation to give life to unique assemblages of spatialized feelings. Design/methodology/approach Drawing from contemporary phenomenological theories, with their specific focus on the affective and embodied dimension of lived experience, this paper describes and discusses two instances of adaptive reuse, one in Brussels, the second in Rome, highlighting their different processes and spatial outcomes. Findings The paper implements recent literature on spatial experience to bring to light conditions found in cases of adaptive reuse. By describing the generators of shared emotions - objects, movements, expressions, materialities, textures - it highlights how the layering of the physical world can lead to both the domestication of affects and to discrepancies and discontinuities in the fabric of experienced space. Originality/value There is only a limited literature dedicated to the description of adaptive reuse processes from the contemporary phenomenological perspective. This kind of description can clarify the dynamics unfolding between citizens and experienced space in cases of heritage reuse

Architettura in trasformazione. Problemi critici del progetto sull'esistente

    No full text
The transformation of the existing is one of the areas that, in architecture, achieves a high degree of complexity, calling into question all the resources of the discipline. It is almost like a second-degree project, related to the practice of architectural restoration but at the same time with a completely independent disciplinary specificity. In the cultural history of architecture the work to transform the existing, especially in the Italian context, has played a founding role in the constant theoretical reasoning as well as on the practice of design. This book traces the key stages of this story, pointing out that the relationship with the physical manifestations of the past has been interpreted, in turn, following the long wave of philosophical thought of each period. The existing buildings are "project material": as such, the contemporary author can decide their fate, interpreting them and introducing them into the life of the new architectures. The details of this process of interpretation are broad and diverse enough to force the designers to put into play all of their skills so the old and new can coexist harmoniously in the same horizon of things. Construction, utility, beauty are called into question, together with the entire spectrum of the tools of the project, to reflect the architecture in its entirety. Despite the fundamental nature of this issue, critical reflection about is still fragmentary and disjointed. The purpose of this book is therefore to reorder the arguments and critical issues within a coherent set of methods

Cultural Sustainability: some Reflections on the Financial Role of the Italian Local Government

    No full text
Considering the indisputable cultural vocation of the Italian context and, in general, given the prominence of the cultural aspect as a factor of influence on many other elements that interact with human actions, this paper considers a fourth pillar joining the three traditional sustainability dimensions (environment, economic, social): cultural sustainability. Local governments have a specific role in implementing sustainability (as highlighted in the Local Agenda 21) and the expense represents an important financial indicator to understand public commitment to sustainability. These elements (the financial role of local government and cultural sustainability) are the starting point for this paper that analyzes the financial commitment of Italian local governments in the cultural sector. The models used shows that cultural expenses are related to the average income of the residents, while they are not related to the cultural heritage of the municipality territory. The empirical results allow the Author to draw some conclusions and to identify some aspects that form the basis for further research
