Mystical strategies and performative discourse in the theologia mystica of Teresa of Avila: A Wittgensteinian analysis

    No full text
The thesis argues that a Wittgensteinian approach to the 'mystical' writings of a 'mystical theologian' such as Teresa of Avila reveals that rather than exhibiting an ontological mysticism these writings are better understood as enacting what are termed 'mystical strategies' or 'performative discourse'. The notion that both Wittgenstein and Teresa employ what are termed 'therapeutic or transformational strategies' to effect change in their readers is central to its argument. In this respect the thesis concludes that their writing is fundamentally transformational in character.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

Slides for the "Images of Borges: A Slide/Tape Program" by Teresa E. Regina

    No full text
The slides for the "Images of Borges: A Slide/Tape Program" written and created by Teresa E. Regina. The presentation is in support of Terry Regina's Thesis, titled "Patterns of Borges", on Jorge Luis Borges' life and work as well as her trip to Argentina and meeting with the poet and author shortly before his death. There are 160 labelled slides in the program, though the text manuscript (see here: https://cdm16122.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p15370coll2/id/26441) only outlines the text and use for the 145 slides. Also some of the numbers for the descriptions in the text for the program do not match up exactly to the slides, but the content seems to match up, so it appears to just be a numbering issue. Do be aware that there may be slides that are out of order in reference to the text manuscript. Towards the end, around slide 140, the slides tend to not follow the manuscript and there seem to be additional slides, including some photos of Jorge Luis Borges during Terry's visit. Titles on individual slides are taken from the text manuscript where able to be determined. For biographical information on Teresa E. Regina, see : https://springfield.as.atlas-sys.com/agents/people/67. For biographical information on Jorge Luis Borges, see: https://springfield.as.atlas-sys.com/agents/people/543.Physically within the collection the slides are divided into two folders, folder 4 (slides 001-080) and folder 5 (slides 081-160). The “Images of Borges” slides are divided into two folders, folder 4 (slides 001-080) and folder 5 (slides 081-160). The reason the slides are divided is solely due to maintain how they were donated and not necessarily to reflect how the presentation was conducted. Therefore, slides from both folders have been combined in this document.; Also items have been combined and not kept separate because it was a presentation or grouping that was created as a whole not as individual items. Where possible and known, metadata was created for individual slides.; There are 160 labelled slides in the program, though the text manuscript (see here: https://cdm16122.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p15370coll2/id/26441) only outlines the text and use for the 145 slides. Also some of the numbers for the descriptions in the text for the program do not match up exactly

    Saint Teresa of Avila

With few exceptions, representations of Renaissance women were created by men. The Spanish saint, Teresa of Avila (1515-1582), who chose to represent herself, was one of those exceptions. What prompted her to write Book of Her Life, Interior Castle , and other works? What does the self-portrait of this sixteenth-century nun, mystic, and founder of convents reveal about its author, the church, state, and role of women? St. Teresa of Avila , an innovative analysis of Teresa's autobiographical writings, explores these and many other questions. Bringing to bear a knowledge of Inquisition studies, theory of autobiography, scriptural hermeneutics, and hagiography, Carole Slade defines Teresa's writings as a project of self-interpretation undertaken mainly as the result of the perceived, later realized, threat of an accusation of heresy. Being female and of paternal Jewish ancestry, Teresa was vulnerable to such a charge.Teresa's writing project presented her with serious difficulties. Judicial confession, her prescribed genre, presumed the writer's guilt, while the subordinate female script precluded a defense against the suspicion that her mystical experiences came from the devil. Through careful textual analysis, Slade demonstrates that Teresa exploited the nuances of numerous genres - hagiography, New World chronicle, mystical theological treatise, and early novel - to create an innocent textual persona and depict herself in heroic terms.A signal contribution to our understanding of Teresa's rhetorical and literary talent and life circumstances, this book will engage readers across a broad range of disciplines

I remember Miss Shizuko Kajikawa and the Seabrook Christian Church

    No full text
In this "I remember" memoir, Teresa Masatani recalls her bible studies teacher, Mrs. Shizuko Kajikawa. She feels that Mrs. Kajikawa had a significant influence on her life because she was kind, tolerant, and loving. Teresa particularly liked bible study classes because Mrs. Kajikawa always offered peanut butter cookies and lemonade. Teresa also mentions that Mrs. Kajikawa acted like a surrogate parent to many Japanese children whose parents spent long hours working in the fields. During one summer, Teresa memorized 300 bible verses so that she could go to a free, week-long bible camp in Pennsylvania. The Seabrook Educational and Cultural Center has been soliciting current and past residents of Seabrook Farms for an "I remember" project. Residents are asked to create narratives regarding their experiences at Seabrook Farms. These memories help preserve the history and multi-cultural heritage of Seabrook Farms

Combined Treatment with Antiviral Therapy and Rituximab in Patients with Mixed Cryoglobulinemia: Review of the Literature and Report of a Case Using Direct Antiviral Agents-Based Antihepatitis C Virus Therapy

    No full text
Mixed cryoglobulinemia (MC) is an autoimmune/B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder associated with Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection, manifesting as a systemic vasculitis. In the last decade, antiviral treatment (AT) with pegylated interferon (Peg-IFN) plus ribavirin (RBV) was considered the first therapeutic option for HCV-MC. In MC patients ineligible or not responsive to antivirals, the anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody rituximab (RTX) is effective. A combined AT plus RTX was also suggested. Since the introduction of direct acting antivirals (DAAs), few data were published about MC and no data about a combined schedule. Here, we report a complete remission of MC after a sustained virological response following a combined RTX/Peg-IFN+RBV+DAA (boceprevir) treatment and review the literature about the combined RTX/AT

Assessment of liver stiffness in patients with HCV and mixed cryoglobulinemia undergoing rituximab treatment

Mixed cryoglobulinemia (MC) is a HCV-related lymphoproliferative disorder generally associated with advanced liver disease. Liver stiffness has been significantly correlated with histopathological stage of fibrosis. Moreover, it was influenced by necroinflammatory activity. Rituximab (RTX) is a chimeric anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody inducing transient B lymphocytes depletion that was shown to be useful and safe in the majority of HCV MC patients, leading also to improvement of cirrhotic syndrome. Aim of this study was to evaluate the modifications of liver stiffness following RTX treatment in HCV-related MC patients. Fourteen consecutive patients (10 F, 4 M; mean age 60.43 ± 43) with HCV-related chronic hepatitis (n = 10) or cirrhosis (n = 4) and MC, eligible for RTX treatment, were prospectively enrolled. Intravenous injection of 1 g of RTX was performed at day 0 and at day 15. Assessment of stiffness was carried out by Fibroscan (Echosens, Paris-France) at baseline, 15 days after the first infusion, and at month 1, 3 and 6 after therapy. MC symptoms significantly improved during the study, especially during the first 3 months. Liver stiffness observed 3 months after treatment was significantly reduced when compared with pre-treatment values (p = 0.01). This difference disappeared after 6 months of follow-up. Cytofluorimetric analysis showed a decrease of CD19+ peripheral blood cells, with the nadir at month 3 after therapy and B cell compartment reconstitution after 6 months. In conclusion this study, for the first time showed that RTX-treatment in HCV-related MC induces a reduction of liver stiffness that is strictly associated with the B-cell depletion
