Introduction:The digital transformations of illicit drug markets as a process of reconfiguration and continuity
This chapter explores the disruptive potential of the Internet to transform illicit drug markets while also challenging stereotypical depictions and superficial understandings of supply and demand. It argues that the digital transformation of illicit drug markets combines, on one hand, a reconfiguration of the scope and impact of how sellers, buyers, and other actors interact within and upon digitally mediated retail drug markets and, on the other hand, continuing trends in the embeddedness of market structures in cultural, economic, political, and legal realms. We develop conceptual ideas for studying the architecture of digital drug markets by drawing on interdisciplinary approaches to digitalisation, markets, and drugs. To understand the functioning of online drug markets, we first need to understand digitalisation. Thus, we draw on scholarship on the digital transformation of society and, second, put forward an understanding of markets that considers how personal relations and social structures enhance and restrict market exchange. Thus, we draw on economic sociology. Third, we build on and extend social science research on illicit drug markets which points out that drug markets exhibit significant variations over time and across jurisdictions. The introduction aims to provide a research agenda that can help us to explore ongoing digital transformations of illicit drug markets. It expands and deepens scholarship on the technological, structural, economic, and cultural factors underlying the resilience and growth of digital drug markets. It also goes beyond a concern with just one type of digital drug market into wider forms of digital environments.</p

The dark side of cryptomarkets:Towards a new dialectic of self-exploitation within platform capitalism
This chapter examines how darknet drug marketplaces operate within platform capitalism. While capitalist power relations remain underexplored in research on digital drug markets, the analysis shows that the basic foundation of cryptomarkets relies on the infrastructure of platform capitalism. The authors use the concept of platform capitalism to explore cryptomarkets in an ideology-critical way. Platforms are infrastructure for the mediation of buyers and vendors; however, they are designed to extract data on the activities of their users. Platform capitalism refers to the process by which the vast collection of user data feeds into the accumulation of capital. The authors use a dialectical method to examine the constellation of digital drug platforms by disclosing a threefold contradiction: state control and selfregulation; visibility and concealment; and legality and illegality. The analysis reveals that darknet drug platforms make a profit not only from the trade of illicit drugs and the collection of user data, but also based on the illegal status of drugs, the associated ideology, and the closed ecology of darknet platforms. Power relations in cryptomarkets thereby mimic those observed in platform capitalism in general. Finally, the authors discuss the implications of platform capitalism for online drug markets.</p

‘Waiting for the delivery man’:Temporalities of addiction, withdrawal, and the pleasures of drug time in a darknet cryptomarket
In this chapter, the author examines the way in which the purchase and delivery infrastructure of darknet cryptomarkets shapes the experience of opiate drug use and dependence. It uses the concept of social time and posits that the illicit drug distribution system reshapes two temporal dimensions shaping the experience of drug users. There is the experience of time located in the pharmacology of the drug and in the body of the drug user, which evokes experiences of withdrawal and dependence. Then there is the socio-technical embedding of the delivery system and governance structures which support or impinge on the autonomy of the user. This ‘drug time’ is both a benefit and a cost of engaging in cryptomarket use. The market infrastructure can give users the opportunities to more carefully manage their drug time, while also creating new risks of non-delivery that can sharpen experiences of dope sickness. The author concludes that the growing professionalisation, digitisation, and commercialisation of the drug market increasingly embed drug time in material infrastructures mediated through technical systems
When home delivery trumps a shady warehouse deal : an exploratory study of Belgian cryptomarket buyers' profile and their motives to buy online
Although we have achieved a greater understanding of cryptomarket specifics, evidence on the consumer side of cryptomarkets is still needed – not only regarding the role of cryptomarkets on individual drug-using careers but also on the motives for buying illicit drugs from cryptomarkets.
Moreover, research has indicated that national differences exist regarding different variables relating to cryptomarket use and prevalence, as well as to why users are drawn to these markets. In this chapter, the author presents the results of a Belgian case study focusing on drug cryptomarket buyers. Using an online quantitative survey (N = 99) and semi-structured interviews (N = 10), we gain exploratory insight into the motives of Belgian buyers sourcing illicit drugs from cryptomarkets and how they believe these cryptomarkets affect their drug-using careers. Results indicate that most of the respondents had bought drugs offline before buying them from cryptomarkets and that the frequency of their drug use did not change once cryptomarkets were accessed. Almost 60% of our respondents, however, consumed different drugs or a wider range of drugs following their cryptomarket use. Furthermore, most of the respondents purchased from cryptomarkets for their personal consumption, and some of them also shared their supply with friends, that is, social supply. The alternative drug offer was the principal reason why they were using cryptomarkets, followed by curiosity and the price and the quality of the drugs. Although the respondents in this study were well aware of different risks related to market vendors, market administrators, and law enforcement, these risks were considered to be minimal and part of the cryptomarket environment. The results of this case study are informative and highlight areas requiring further research
Gender Representations in Online Modafinil Markets
This chapter examines representations of gender in online modafinil markets. While gender has often been absent from scholarship on online drug markets, our analysis demonstrates the ubiquity of gender in representations of modafinil users and sellers. The analysis draws on visual images, blogs, and marketing emails relating to three websites selling modafinil, discussed pseudonymously. We describe the range of ways that notions of gender are represented in advertising. Although women represent around 40% of that buying modafinil online, websites and communications tended not to feature women. Although sexist stereotypes of women were rarely present (in contrast to direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical advertising), the ways that modafinil was imagined tended to focus narrowly on corporate spheres of work and productivity. We contrast this narrow imaginary with female journalists’ own accounts of using modafinil to manage illness and enhance creativity. Thus, we conclude that the ways that modafinil has been imagined reflects working assumptions as to who is considered the ‘normal’ participant in online modafinil markets
Informal Governance on Cryptomarkets for Illicit Drugs
A global phenomenon has emerged in recent years: That of anonymous drug marketplaces on the Internet that usually combines anonymising software and virtual currencies as a means of payment, concealing the identity and location of its users. These technological innovations on the Internet allow users to proceed with illicit drug transactions with almost completely anonymous identities and physical locations and thus minimise the risk of law enforcement intervention. On cryptomarkets, vendors offer a wide range of psychoactive substances and other goods or services for sale. In addition, the purchased drugs are delivered by traditional postal services without their knowledge. This chapter aims to analyse the development of practices of resistance in relation to antidrug policies, practices that unfold through anonymous drug marketplaces. To explore social practices of informal resistance, the chapter draws on a digital ethnographic study on cryptomarkets. It observes that users on cryptomarkets follow a self-proclaimed libertarian ideology to systematically bypass drug control policies. The chapter also reflects upon how both economically disadvantaged, socially excluded, marginalised, technically non-skilled users and drug addicts, as well as drug producers of the global South are systematically excluded from expressions of informal resistance to prohibition-based drug policies as they do not participate in cryptomarkets.</p

Providing a uniquely interdisciplinary perspective, chapters show how the digital transformation of illicit drug markets combines a reconfiguration of how sellers and buyers interact in new markets. Emphasising that illicit digital markets are embedded in societal structures and power relations in general, contributors also recognise the importance of critical perspectives on inequalities between the Global North and South as well as issues of gender.

Comparing cryptomarkets for drugs. A characterisation of sellers and buyers over time
Introduction: Cryptomarkets operating on the darknet are a recent phenomenon that has gained importance only over the last couple of years (Barratt, 2012). However, they now constitute an evolving part of illicit drug markets. Although selling and buying a variety of psychoactive substances on the Internet has a long history, new technological developments enable systematic drug trading on the net. These technological innovations on the Internet allow users to proceed with (illicit) drug transactions with almost completely anonymous identities and locations. In this paper, we provide a systematic measurement analysis of structures and trends on the most popular anonymous drug marketplace, and discuss the role of cryptomarkets in drug distribution. Methods: Data collection and analysis include a long-term measurement of the cryptomarket ‘AlphaBay', the most popular platform during the survey period. By developing and applying a web-scraping tool, market data was extracted from the marketplace on a daily basis during a period of twelve months between September 2015 and August 2016. The data was analysed by using business-intelligence software, which allows the linking of various data sets. We found 2188 unique vendors offering 11,925 drug items. The findings of our long-term monitoring and data analysis are compared over time and across marketplaces, offering a detailed understanding of the development of revenues generated, characterisation of countries of origin and destination, and distribution of vendors and customers over time. Results: We provide a nuanced and highly detailed longitudinal analysis of drug trading on the darknet marketplace ‘AlphaBay', which was the largest cryptomarket in operation. 1) Total sales volumes for the ‘drugs' section was estimated at approximately USD 94 million for the period from September 2015 to August 2016. 2) In addition, about 64% of all sales are made with cocaine-, cannabis-, heroin-, and ecstasy-related products. 3) Average selling prices increase over time for categories including cannabis and hashish, ecstasy, opioids, psychedelics and stimulants. 4) The five most frequent countries of origin as indicated by vendors are the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, the Netherlands and Germany. Moreover, it was demonstrated that drug distribution on cryptomarkets is conducted at a regional rather than global level. 6) Furthermore, 4.88% of vendors made over USD 200,000 and were responsible for 52.9% of total revenues generated over the period analysed. In contrast, 57.51% of vendors managed to sell drug items worth less than USD 10,000 within a period of twelve months. The findings suggest that ‘AlphaBay' was a cryptomarket mainly from and for Western industrialised countries. In contrast, countries of the global South are neither among the main countries of origin nor destination countries.</p
