A Global Assessment of Domestic Petroleum Fuel Prices
Oil prices have been increasingly volatile since 2004. However, the impact of this volatility on domestic end-user prices differs significantly by fuel and country. Some countries fully pass through global price movements to domestic end-user prices, and some countries freeze domestic fuel prices for long periods of time. Fuel subsidies emerge or grow if domestic prices significantly diverge from international prices in times of rising international oil prices. This paper draws on two new databases developed by the author for the purposes of this paper to analyze the degree of pass-through of international price volatility onto domestic consumers for eight fuels between December 2017 and December 2023 for up to 125 economies, depending on the fuel. This period saw significant oil price volatility on account of events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. The paper finds that domestic prices in many countries did not follow international fuel prices within the period analyzed. Countries with price controls had much lower levels of pass-through than those with price deregulation. Countries that adjusted their fuel prices at frequent intervals (weekly or monthly) had higher levels of price pass-through than those adjusting them quarterly or less frequently. Currency depreciation and the existence of an official fuel subsidy are associated with lower levels of price pass-through, and the impact of being a net crude oil or net refined fuel exporter is mixed. The results show that not tracking international prices closely is associated with higher incidences of fuel shortages, fuel smuggling, and fuel black marketing
Pseudomonas aeruginosa bloodstream infections in children in Queensland, Australia, 2000–2019
Aim
To investigate the incidence, risk factors and outcomes of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bloodstream infections (P-BSI) in Queensland children aged 0–18 years.
Methods
A retrospective data-linkage study was conducted of P-BSI identified by Pathology Queensland laboratories from resident Queensland children admitted to publicly-funded Queensland Hospitals between 2000 and 2019. We estimated age-standardised incidence of P-BSI and case fatality ratios (48 h, 7-, 30- and 90-day all-cause mortality from the date of the blood culture collection). Data on underlying co-morbidities related to the episode of P-BSI were collected from statewide databases.
Results
Overall, 297 episodes of P-BSI were identified in 265 children, with an overall incidence of 1.14 infections/100 000 child-years. The median age of children with P-BSI was 3.7 years [interquartile range 1.2–10.7 years]. Almost 90% (n = 266/297) of infections were healthcare-associated. There were 36 (36 episodes) neonates (31 preterm <37 weeks gestation), of whom 12 (33.3%) and 15 (41.7%) neonates died within 48 h and 7 days of the P-BSI, respectively. The remaining 229 (261 episodes) children were aged 1 month to 18 years, and 234/261 (89.7%) episodes were associated with underlying co-morbidities, especially haematological malignancies. Eleven, 15 and 24 of the 229 children beyond the neonatal age group died within 48 h (4.8%), 7 days (6.6%) and 30 days (10.5%), respectively of the index blood culture. Neonates, healthcare-associated hospital onset infections, cardiovascular co-morbidity, and multi-drug resistance were significantly associated with early mortality.
Conclusions
P-BSI occurs predominantly in vulnerable, hospitalised children with underlying comorbidities, especially in preterm neonates and those with haematological malignancies, and is associated with substantial mortality. No Full Tex
Longitudinal Analysis of Female Authorship of Psychiatry Articles in Turkey
Introduction: The number of women with careers in medicine and with academic positions at medical schools has increased substantially since the 1980s; however, women remain underrepresented in medical academia, which may be because of the fewer research publications authored by women. This study aimed to determine the gender distribution among Turkish authors of psychiatry articles published in international scientific journals during a 30-year period. Methods: The ISI Web of Science database was searched for all psychiatry publications between 1980 and 2009 using the search term Turkey. All articles were classified according to publication period (1980-1989, 1990-1999, 2000-2004, and 2005-2009), gender of the first and last authors, first author title, total number of authors, and type of article. Results: In all, 1961 articles meet the study criteria. The first author of 36.5% of the articles and 34.9% of last authors were women. The percentage of female first and last authors did not differ according to publication period (p=0.57). Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge this is the first study to examine gender and authorship of psychiatric research in Turkey. In total, 33% of academic positions in Turkish university psychiatry departments were occupied by women, which is comparable to the percentage of female first authors of psychiatric research papers from Turkey. It could be concluded that women academics in psychiatry departments from state universities are as reproductive as their male counterparts, but there is still a "gender gap" in psychiatry field in our country.Wo
Standardized patient simulation in nursing education: A bibliometric analysis and visualization from 2002 to 2024
Aim: This study employed a bibliometric analysis to examine the existing literature on the use of standardised patient simulation in nursing education. Background: SP simulation offers students the opportunity to directly interact with a range of nursing interventions and practices. It demonstrates that SP simulation can be used as an active learning methodology in nursing education. Design: Bibliometric and content analysis. Methods: The data set was obtained from the Web of Science database. The sample comprised 310 publications that fulfilled the a priori defined inclusion criteria. The data were subjected to both descriptive content analysis and bibliometric analysis. A bibliometric analysis was conducted using VOSviewer, a software program designed for the mapping and visualisation of bibliometric data. Results: A total of 198 publications were published in 2002-2024. The publications had 3042 citations. Nurse Education Today has the highest number of publications and citations. In terms of authors, Elcin was the author with the highest number of citations (n = 186). In accordance with the findings of the trend topic analysis, the keywords 'simulation', 'nursing education', 'standardised patient' and 'nursing students' emerged in the field. Conclusion: The number of studies examining the efficacy of using standard patient simulators in nursing education has seen a notable increase in recent years. The findings of this study may offer researchers and nursing faculties new insights into the value of incorporating standardised patient simulation into nursing education, as well as potential applications of such an approach
The current difficult economic situation, fueled by the instability of the geopolitical situation, the devaluation of the national currency and the decrease in the profitability of traditional investment instruments, can change the preferences of citizens who invest their savings in the stock market instead of simply accumulating or storing these savings on deposits.
The main goal of the master's thesis is to identify the most suitable financial strategies for a private investor in the Russian stock market, taking into account its specifics and features.
With the advent of digitalization and the development of technology, competition in the stock markets has intensified. Private investors are trying to find new strategies that would bring them the desired return with a stable level of risk or they use well-known and already proven strategies, changing them and adjusting for themselves. The issue of creating new and own strategies or modifications of existing ones will always be faced by investors, this determines the relevance of the topic of the master's thesis.
The scientific novelty of the work is expressed in the proposed by the author of various modifications of well-known strategies, taking into account the features and specifics of the Russian stock market, as well as testing these strategies in order to justify their acceptability specifically for the Russian stock market. It is planned to carry out calculations for all types of considered strategies, the strategies will be considered in their original form and in a modified form (taking into account various modifications proposed by the author). Comparison of the results obtained, as well as conclusions about the historical effectiveness and operability of the strategies carry significant practical significance both for future researchers on this topic and for private investors who want to test these strategies on the Russian stock market.
The master's thesis examined in detail the three most popular and studied strategies in the international financial markets: highly dividend strategies based on the Dogs of the Dow strategy, relative value strategies, and momentum-based strategies. Testing these strategies on the Russian stock market, taking into account the author’s modifications, showed the following results: 28 out of 30 portfolios compiled on the basis of the Dogs of the Dow strategy showed better returns than the Moscow Exchange Index (market equivalent) for the same period, which confirms the practical the applicability of this strategy in our market; the relative value strategy still has a slight advantage compared to simply investing in the Moscow Exchange Index (20% of the average annual return versus 15%) and has the right to exist and further, deeper research; when researching strategies based on momentum effect, we came to the conclusion that when using this strategy, speculative strategies (selling strategies) are obtained most profitable, which is not entirely positive for the market, because this indicates a decrease in the value of shares of both individual companies and market as a whole
The Novel Mahmut and Meryem: Instance of Re-Writting
üretmiştir. Efendiyev, eserini yeniden yazarken hikâyenin olay örgüsüne bağlı kalmış;
This study will examine the novel called Mahmut with Meryem by Elcin Efendiyev,
one of the most important names in contemporary Azerbaijani literature, according to the
“re-writing” method. In Mahmut with Meryem, which was published in 1984 as a novel,
the author took the story of Aslı and Kerem as a sub-text and produced a modern text by
using the re-writing method. Although whilst re-writing her book Efendiyev remained
close to the plot; she interfered significantly with the elements such as message, event,
people, time, place, genre, etc.. Some individual and social themes have been added on
top of the story of Aslı and Kerem. As well as expanding the cadre people with psychological
depth have been placed instead of certain the plain characters in the novel. The
most significant change is felt in the basic delivery of the novel. While the story of Aslı
and Kerem is based on romantic love, the message of the novel is human love
