Notes on the Sinjska Alka and their Applicability in Ethnological Research
The author in this paper discusses articles written on Sinjska Alka in the period from the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th until the present day. Since this paper was mostly re-written from her MA thesis, in the introductory paragraph the author outlines the background of her interest in Sinjska Alka as the topic of her research.
The research on the durability of Sinjska Alka, the relationship between tradition in modernity embedded in it and its role in the construction of the identity of the population of the region of Cetinska Krajina have brought the author to the conclusion that the image and the perception of Alka in different historical and political moments of its’ 300 years long existence, was significantly determined by the character of its media coverage. The author has divided written contributions on Alka according to the periods of their publication partially linking the ways in which Alka was represented with different historical-political and social-cultural contexts at the moment of their appearance. She also analyzed ethnological articles written on the subject, seeing them as a staring point for a more professional approach to this topic
TRANSFORMATION OF THE NOTION OF CHIVALRY WITHIN SINJSKA ALKA (Summary)
The author deals with the different relation towards the notion of chivalry within the contemporary context of the Sinjska Alka, a traditional game from the region of Sinjska krajina, which originates from the mediaeval chivalry tournaments and is in itself defined as being chivalrous. The first part is dedicated to the reconstruction of the events from the 286th Alka festivity, that is, their political context and different comprehension of the notion of chivalry the participants have shown, and it is mainly based on newspapers’ articles. This is followed by a part with the discussion of the basis on which the mediaeval institution of chivalry has been founded, and which stresses out the changed meaning of the chivalry and its values. Those are being compared to the ones that can be interpreted from the Statute of the Chivalry Alka Society. The last part talks about the intensification of the usage of the notion of chivalry in Croatia from the beginning of the 1990s war, about the development of its meaning within the context of the Sinjska Alka and about its manifest characteristics
Between Pride and Polemic: Challenges of Interpreting Sensitive Topics in the Context of Sinjska Alka
The paper analyzes the experiences and challenges of museological interpretation of sensitive historical topics in the context of the Sinjska Alka – one of the most important traditions of Croatian cultural identity. The author, curator of the Museum of Sinjska Alka, uses his own professional experiences to examine how to balance the authenticity of historical narratives with community expectations, how to select relevant content, and how contemporary museological tools can help shape socially sensitive and scientifically based presentations. Special attention is paid to methodological approaches in examining controversial topics and the importance of including the local community in the museological discourse
A study to assess the knowledge regarding breast cancer and practices of breast self-examination among women in urban area
Background: Out of all cancers, breast cancer only is responsible for 1.5 lakh cases (10%) of cancer burden in India by 2016. The present study was carried out among women in an urban area with objective to assess knowledge of women in age group 20-60 years regarding causes and risk factors of breast cancer and their practice regarding breast self-examination. An association between the socio-demographic variables and knowledge of women regarding breast cancer and breast self-examination was sought for and an attempt was made to demonstrate individually to each woman included in the study, the correct method of performing BSE.Methods: A community based cross sectional study was conducted. Total 100 subjects were selected by multistage sampling technique. Structured questionnaire were used to test their knowledge about breast cancer and practice regarding BSE.Results: Out of 100 women, 58% had knowledge that breast cancer was the most prevalent cancer among women, 52% knew what breast self-examination is and 28% were practicing breast self-examination.Conclusions: There is a need for developing health education programs about symptoms and early signs of breast cancer with emphasis on the importance of early breast cancer detection. Breast self-examination should be encouraged. The health education programs and mass media education should be targeted towards females in the age group between 20 years and above, ideally those 35 years of age and above. Further research regarding knowledge and practice of women towards breast cancer is recommended.</jats:p

The McMahon line: View from the ground
This chapter draws on field research carried out in Arunachal Pradesh for an account of the McMahon Line from the time of its coming into existence in 1914 to its persistent relevance in the present day. Apart from published scholarship on the subject, this chapter draws on more than a hundred conversations with the people along the Arunachal-Tibet border, and on the author’s access to local administrative documents and locally published and private papers as primary source materials. The aim of the research and the chapter is to foreground the perceptions of the local people who inhabit the border area and to study the response of national policy on the ground. The author is currently working on further corroborating and verifying details for a book on the integration of Arunachal Pradesh in the face of Chinese claims on the region

Reason: Author requested U of Illinois access only (OA after 2yrs) in Vireo ETD systemAuthor requested U of Illinois access only (OA after 2yrs) in Vireo ETD systemU of I OnlyLower heart rate reserve, a major risk factor for hypertension, can affect cognitive decline in similar way as seen in hypertensive individuals, but if it has an effect on cognitive performance and impairment in oxygenation of the prefrontal cortex (PFC), leading to cognitive impairment in these individuals is still unknown. Unfortunately, how heart rate reserve can affect these measures while dual-task walking is still not understood as cognitive and motor decline in older adults is related to their dual task performance. Additionally, the relationship between heart rate reserve and cognitive motor interference (CMI), which is a direct of measure of dual-task performance related to falls in older adults, has not been examined. It is important to understand these relationships because falls related to dual-task walking is very common in older adults and causes major consequences that negatively affect their daily living.
Thus, the objective of this dissertation was to examine the effect of heart rate reserve on dual task walking in middle aged to older aged adults by examining dual task cost (measure of CMI), error rate (measure of cognitive performance), and PFC activation among the dual tasks which was compared with single task walking. All studies involved assessing heart rate reserve, cardiovascular endurance through Naughton Submaximal test and performance of the Trail Walking Task (TWT) on an instrumented treadmill. Spatiotemporal measures were used to measure dual task cost and the error rate was used as the measure for cognitive performance. Chapter 1 found that individuals exhibited higher dual-task cost when going from single-task walking to dual-task walking. Furthermore, when compared to the easiest TWT condition, all participants exhibited decrease in dual-task cost during the difficult TWT condition. Chapter 2 found that higher heart rate reserve individuals exhibited higher PFC activation (i.e., increase in oxyhemoglobin and decrease in deoxyhemoglobin) going from single task walking to dual task walking for all the dual task conditions. Additionally, we found the differences in recruitment of PFC activation (i.e., greater changes in PFC when going from single-task walking to dual-task walking) during the easiest TWT condition when compared to the difficult TWT condition. Chapter 3 found that individuals with lower heart rate reserve were overall walking slowly in all tasks compared to higher heart rate reserve individuals, there was increase in speed going from single to difficult TWT condition for both groups. In addition, there were no significant differences in cognitive performance while dual task walking among the cohorts when going from easier to difficult TWT condition. Overall, the findings from this study indicated that while dual-task walking, individuals with lower heart rate reserve exhibited greater decrements in physical dual-task performance and greater recruitment of attentional resources showing increase in delta PFC while dual tasking which is consistent with the Compensation related utilization of neural circuits hypothesis (CRUNCH) model and “supply and demand” theory. As a whole, these study’s findings add to the current literature establishing the beneficial effects of heart rate reserve for dual-task walking. While this study was the first to examine the overall effects of heart rate reserve on measures directly and indirectly related to dual tasking, no causal relationships can be formed. Thus, it is recommended for research to examine the effects of an intervention program on these measures in adults with impaired heart rate reserve. Such findings will elucidate the importance of healthy heart rate reserve in middle aged to older aged adults to improve dual-tasking ability and decrease the risk of falls
Mechanics of inhomogeneous turbulence and interfacial layers
The mechanics of inhomogeneous turbulence in and adjacent to interfacial layers bounding turbulent and non-turbulent regions are analysed. Different mechanisms are identified according to the straining by the turbulent eddies in relation to the strength of the mean shear adjacent to, or across, the interfacial layer. How the turbulence is initiated and the topology of the region of turbulence are also significant factors. Specifically the cases of a layer of turbulence bounded on one, or two, sides by a uniform and/or shearing flow, and a circular region of a rotating turbulent vortex are considered and discussed.
The entrainment processes at fluctuating interfaces occur both at the outer edges of turbulent shear layers, with and without free-stream turbulence (e.g. jets, wakes and boundary layers), at internal boundaries such as those at the outside of the non-turbulent core of swirling flows (e.g. the ‘eye-wall’ of a hurricane) or at the top of the viscous sublayer and roughness elements in turbulent boundary layers. Conditionally sampled data enables these concepts to be tested. These concepts lead to physically based estimates for critical modelling parameters such as eddy viscosity near interfaces, entrainment rates, maximum velocity and displacement heights
