Oral History Interview with Victor Rodriguez, June 13-18, 2009
No full textInterview with Dr. Victor Rodriguez, educator and author of the memoir "The Bell Ringer," about his life and career. Dr. Rodriguez is a North Texas alumni, member of the UNT Athletic Hall of fame, member of the Geezles Fraternity, and pioneer Mexican American educator. Dr. Victor Rodriguez spotlights significant insights into his storied career through five eras: his early all-Hispanic elementary school training; his continued study and budding athletic prowess in the Edna, TX, school district; his Victoria Junior College athletic achievements and learning; his higher education, Geezle membership, and track accomplishments at North Texas State College; and his 37-year career as a teacher, coach, and superintendent in the San Antonio school district. Inspired by his Anglo third-grade teacher in an all-Hispanic school in Edna, TX, Rodriguez responded to his teacher's challenge to be a civic contributor by becoming a daily bell ringer at the local Catholic church (described in detail in his book, The Bell Ringer), a job requiring him to arise at 4:30 each morning and to run two miles one way amid nipping dogs to ring the bell. This discipline and activity would tap his athletic ability later as he surfaced as a distance district winner despite running barefoot, in blue jeans, and in an oversized t-shirt. From this beginning, he would emerge as a state champion and win a track scholarship to Victoria Junior College where he would win the national junior college title; that accomplishment would earn him track scholarship offers from many top-level four-year college programs of which he selected North Texas State College to continue his running and educational pursuits. While at NTSC, he joined the Geezle Fraternity and captured attributes of group cohesion, solidarity, and mutual benefit/trust. On the cinder track, his talents earned him gold medals in national events such as the Kansas and Drake Relays. After college and military service, Victor joined the San Antonio ISD to begin a 37-year career journey, first as a classroom teacher for bilingual children, then to increasing levels of responsibility as coach, teacher, principal, area coordinator, climaxing at the pinnacle of leadership as superintendent for the district. No full textVictor is a mechanical engineering undergraduate at the University of Central Florida. He currently conducts research at the Nanoscience Technology Center. At the center, he works with novel 2D materials for the development of transistors. Upon completing his undergraduate degree, Victor is interested in pursuing a graduate level degree in a study that focuses on the interface between technology and society; specifically, a technology policy degree. Measuring and analyzing German and Spanish customer satisfaction of using the iPhone 4S Mobile Cloud service
No full textThis paper presents the customer satisfaction analysis for measuring popularity in the Mobile Cloud, which is an emerging area in the Cloud and Big Data Computing. Organizational Sustainability Modeling (OSM) is the proposed method used in this research. The twelve-month of German and Spanish consumer data are used for the analysis to investigate the return and risk status associated with the ratings of customer satisfaction in the iPhone 4S Mobile Cloud services. Results show that there is a decline in the satisfaction ratings in Germany and Spain due to economic downturn and competitions in the market, which support our hypothesis. Key outputs have been explained and they confirm that all analysis and interpretations fulfill the criteria for OSM. The use of statistical and visualization method proposed by OSM can expose unexploited data and allows the stakeholders to understand the status of return and risk of their Cloud strategies easier than the use of other data analysis

A Norwegian grey zone: Knut Rød, Victor Lind and 'The crucial year, 1942'
No full textThis article uses Primo Levi’s concept of “the grey zone” to explore Knut Rød’s involvement in the transfer of 532 Norwegian Jews from Oslo to Auschwitz in 1942. Rød, the police chief in charge of the operation, was subsequently exonerated of any crime on the grounds that he had simultaneously used his position to help members of Milorg – the Norwegian Resistance. The legal and moral basis of this verdict has been questioned by the artist Victor Lind in a series of artworks, including his “countermonument” The Perpetrator (2005)
The 64-bit .NET e-portal applications for e-Learning and e-Science
No full textThis is one of the first comprehensive 64-bit .NET research to be completed in a British University. The objective is to investigate (1) the techniques to develop 64-bit applications; and (2) how 64-bit computing can be used for e-Learning and e-Science communities. This paper is focused on an emerging technology for e-Learning and e-Science communities -- a 64-bit .NET e-portal application, and its functionality, development and technical implementation are described. Currently, additional troubleshooting is required to make .NET Framework 1.1 working in stable ways on 64-bit Windows operating systems. After stabilizing .NET environment, the next step is the application development, which is a dynamic repository with functions such as registration, download, login-logout, product submissions, database storage and statistical reports. The technology is based on Visual Studio .NET 2003, .NET 1.1 Framework with Service Pack 1, SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 4 and IIS Server 6.0 on the Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 platform with Service Pack 1. The 64-bit .NET e-portal integrates further with Java Web Services, and a demonstration described in this paper can show how different types of services can work in harmony. Furthermore, the interdisciplinary area between e-Learning and e-Science has been investigated and in the process of further integrations. As an example for such integration, the 64-bit .NET e-portal is also an illustration for (1) the methods of technical implementations and (2) cost-effectiveness; and these two issues are also among the current research interests in e-Learning. Finally, the new insights identified by this paper have also achieved the two objectives: (1) learning about emerging technology and (2) understanding how Web Services can complete jobs

He is also the creator and writer of a comic book Victor LaValle’s DESTROYER. He has been the recipient of numerous awards including a Whiting Writers’ Award, a United States Artists Ford Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Shirley Jackson Award, an American Book Award, and the key to Southeast Queens. He was raised in Queens, New York. He now lives in Washington Heights with his wife and kids. He teaches at Columbia University.
