Beyond nature and health: do the benefits of nature extend from health to healthcare spending and opioid-related mortality?

No full text
Human exposure to natural settings holds numerous health benefits that are suspected or known to be substantial and wide-ranging, from simple outcomes such as improved sleep up to a reduced chance of mortality. This dissertation includes three studies that investigate the ability of nature exposure to extend beyond the health benefits into two higher-level effects that are in large part determined by health status: healthcare spending levels and opioid-related mortality rates. These studies employed an ecological and cross-sectional study design with counties in the United States with data from federal agencies in a series of geospatial regression models. The results show that counties with more green space (vegetated areas such as forests, parks, and fields), exhibit lower per-capita healthcare spending, but the same is not true of blue spaces (open bodies of water). Furthermore, green spaces were positively associated with opioid-related mortality in the third study. While these studies are ecological and therefore meant to serve mostly as a launching point for these research strands, the results do suggest that exposure to nature, or at least to green spaces, could confer benefits beyond improved health. Policymakers, urban planners and foresters, and others with a stake in health and healthcare policy may consider these results when designing policies and programs for a healthier society. Future research with data on individuals and other healthcare financing sources should be conducted to draw more definitive conclusions about these associations.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2023-05-01The student, Douglas Becker, accepted the attached license on 2021-04-21 at 12:25.The student, Douglas Becker, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2021-04-21 at 12:28.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2021-04-22 at 15:45.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #16463 on 2021-09-16 at 17:04:17Made available in DSpace on 2021-09-17T02:34:41Z (GMT). International Trade, Productivity Growth, Education and Wage Differentials: A Case Study of Taiwan.

No full text
The source of changes in the wage differential between skilled and unskilled labor has been an important subject of debate for several decades. International trade and productivity growth are two main causes that have been suggested from large country studies. Recent research proposes education as another influence. All three causes have been significantly associated with Taiwan's economic development. This paper attempts to contribute to the literature by investigating wage differentials of Taiwan, a small open economy with a paucity of study on the issue of trade and wages. An Error Correction Model (ECM) incorporating both short and long term run effects is employed.WAGES ; INTERNATIONAL TRADE ; PRODUCTIVITY

Fatigue resistance vs. fall resistance: high-intensity interval training and the dissociation of stamina and stability in older adults

No full text
Includes bibliographical references.2016 Fall.INTRODUCTION: The population of older adults (≥65 years) in the U.S. is growing, and this population faces unique health risks compared to young and middle aged adults. One of the primary health risks for older adults is falling, which is the leading cause of preventable death and injury within this population. Traditional exercise interventions have been effective in reducing fall risk but require significant time commitment. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) requires less time commitment than traditional exercise training and may be a viable alternative to reduce fall risk among older adults. METHODS: 13 sedentary young (n=7, 4 female; age: 21±1 (mean ± SE)) and older (n=6, 2 female; age; 69±2) adults completed 9 sessions of HIIT over 3 weeks. Balance at rest and after a single bout of HIIT was measured via center-of-pressure (COP) measures, fatigue resistance via a time to exhaustion (TTE) test, maximal aerobic capacity (VO2max) via indirect calorimetry and peak power output via Wingate test. All variables were assessed before and after training. RESULTS: Short-term HIIT had no effect on balance at rest or following a single bout of HIIT. TTE was greater in both young (25.8±4.0 vs. 37.0±3.1 min) and older (31.5±3.9 vs. 54.0±8.8 min) adults after training (p<0.05). VO2max was also greater after training (+1.8 ml/kg/min, p<0.05) in both groups. Peak power output during HIIT was greater after training in young (p<0.001) but not in older adults. CONCLUSION: These data do not support HIIT as an effective intervention for reducing fall risk in older adults. Three weeks of HIIT improves fatigue resistance but not balance, indicating a dissociation between stamina and stability in young and older adults

On the Mutual Omission of Mark 14:51-52 in Matthew and Luke

No full text
This article is intended as an investigation of the absence of the "fleeing youth" story (Mark 14:51-52) in Matthew and Luke. Based on "Markan priority" that the Gospel of Mark is the first Gospel, we are forced to think that both Matthew and Luke omitted Mk. (1Iark) 14:51-52. Many scholars have come to accept this "mutual omission" by regarding this "fleeing youth" as the author Mark himself. However, some scholars question this theory. Meanwhile, since the 1950s, the relationship between the "fleeing youth" and the "youth in Jesus' empty tomb" (16:1-8) in Mark has been discussed. However, this theory cannot explain the "mutual omission" unless we modify the traditional interpretation of Mark. Therefore, we notice in Knox (1951) that a linen cloth ("sindon"), which the youth left in 14:51-52, is used as Jesus' burial outfit (Mk. 15:46). Basically, the "lexical cohesion" is not only the relationship between 14:51-52 and 15:46, but also between 14:51-52 and 16:5. When the other Gospels were not written, the readers of Mark regarded Jesus' outfit as the death itself that the youth left to save his life. Then, insofar as we base our reasoning on Markan priority, we cannot find any basis for regarding the youth of Mk. 16:5 as an angel. Moreover, if the youth of 14:51-52 is recognized as the youth of 16:5, the youth of 16:5 should be equally a disciple as in 14:51-52. In return for Jesus' death, the youth of Mk. 16:5 is a certain disciple who is resurrected from the death. Although Hamilton (1965) attempts to explain the empty tomb by the interpretation that people who rise from the dead are as angels that are in heaven in "the controversy with Sadducee" (Mk. 12:25), his opinion serves to explain the influence of the mutual omission of 14:51-52 in both Matthew and Luke. The author of Matthew added "the Saints' Resurrection" (27-51-53) immediately after Jesus' death. In Matthew, because both the "Saints' Resurrection" incident and "empty tomb" story mention earthquakes, the two stories have lexical cohesion. Readers realize that the resurrection of the youth identified with a disciple in Mk.l6:5 coincides with Jesus' death. Moreover the author rewrote Mark's "youth" in the empty tomb as "an angel of the Lord" (Mattew 28:2). The author of Luke rewrote Mark's youth in the empty tomb as "two men" (24: 4). In the "Emmaus" story (24: 13-35), two disciples tell Jesus that the women recognized "two men" as "angels: This fact leads readers to the recognition that the persons who rise from the death resemble "angels" through human eyes. In common, their alterations are premised on "the controversy with Sadducee" in each Gospel

Technology education in secondary schools

No full text
The author outlines his background and refers to current relevant attitudes. He considers changes which have influenced the curriculum for manufacturing in resilient materials in schools. The word technology is currently in common use. Having examined a range of sources for common themes, the author synthesises a definition and examines some implications. He uses the example of the development of the electronic computer to illustrate the difference between science and technology before arguing that 'new technology', in schools, properly belongs within the framework of 'Craft Design & Technology' (CDT). Using references from industry, education and elsewhere, he describes the process of designing and upholds its predominance as a skill to be fostered. Arising from its cyclic nature are implications for the assessment of performance. As labour saving devices, windmills and robots are widely separated by time but both require control and the author seeks to explore this link. The components of control are also identifiable in the work of pupils over many years. He contrasts industrial robots with those of their prophets. The need far a review of the education service was established in 1976. The consequent chain of political initiatives in Britain is described highlighting the nature of politics. He considers a case history when those who 'do' become championed by those who would have it done’. Durham Local Education Authority's progress in CDT in-service training is described and the world of 'lower school' technology is explored by considering both pupil and updated teacher. The author describes industrial reality and intimates a curriculum possibility - the design, by lower school pupils, of automatic systems. He sees the computer in the CDT curriculum both as design tool and as part of solutions to human needs

Efficiency of carbon dioxide storage and enhanced methane recovery in a high rank coal

No full text
The high affinity and adsorption capacity of coal to carbon dioxide provides an alternative approach for the enhanced recovery of methane from unminable coalfields (CO2-ECBM) by which a potential solution for long-term CO2 sequestration in deep geological formations can also be achieved. However, due to chemomechanical effects induced by the interactions between CO2 and coal, the effective methane production and carbon dioxide storage can be degraded which has caused uncertainties about the techno-economic feasibility of the CO2-ECBM process. This study presents an experimental investigation that aims to address key knowledge gaps related to the efficiency of CO2 storage and CH4 recovery in high rank coals for which a comprehensive experimental data set and analysis are largely missing. Competitive displacements of CH4 with N2 or CO2 in an anthracite coal sample from a South Wales coalfield have been studies, based on a series of core flooding experiments. The results show that the N2 breakthrough time (the time at which 1% of the total gas injected was recovered) was almost spontaneous whereas a considerably delayed breakthrough time was observed for the case of the CO2-ECBM experiment. In addition it was observed that for the CO2-ECBM experiment, the ratios of CH4 recovery with respect to the total amount of gas injected and gas stored were higher by factors of 10 and 2.4, respectively. The results also show that 90% of the total N2 injected was produced in the outflow gas, whereas for the case of the CO2 experiment, only 63% of the total injected CO2 was produced. The presence of a high amount of N2 in the outflow may lead to additional challenges in order to separate N2 from CH4 and thus affect the efficiency of the N2-ECBM method. Under the conditions of the experiments, the total CH4 displacement ratio and breakthrough for the case CO2-ECBM were found to be more favorable compared to those obtained from N2-ECBM. This study provides new insights into the efficiency of the CO2-ECBM process and offers a comprehensive experimental data set that can be used for testing the accuracy of predictive models
