Environmental monitoring of the historic city
In recent decades, urban research and experimentation have analyzed the climate problem at various scales, in line with 'climate proof' policies aimed to verify the strategies proposed throughout the entire life cycle of the project and evaluate their 'efficient use', where ‘use’ stands for the identification of its potentialities and their translation in a planning act, for an 'integrated conservation' in relationship between urban morphology and urban climate. In this context, the research focuses on the definition and analysis of 'basic factors', whose monitoring is crucial for acting in accordance with the real needs of the site
Spazio urbano della città storica e ventilazione naturale. Esperienze internazionali di ‘ri’pianificazione e ‘ri’progettazione microclimatica / Urban space of the historical city and natural ventilation. International experiences of microclimatic ‘re’-planning and ‘re’-designing
In recent decades, urban research and experimentation have analysed the climate problem at various scales, in line
with 'climate proof' policies aimed at verifying the strategies proposed throughout the entire life cycle of the project,
which is possible thanks to continuous monitoring of the results.
The level of action is twofold: 'hierarchical', from the macro-scale to the local and micro scale, and 'horizontal', of
methodological and operational sharing between local realities. The importance of an inter-scalar approach is more
evident in relation to complex scenarios, such as historical ones, where awareness of cultural values must dialogue with
any activity aimed at combating climate change.
Starting from the evaluation of the main lines of action, however, there emerges a lack of coordination between policies
and practices of adaptation - and we must also add protection - to which we can add, on a local and micro scale, the
difficulty in finding microclimatic data specific to particular urban areas, which is fundamental for acting in
accordance with the real needs of the site. And it is precisely from this "basic" level that a careful "mending" of urban
space must start for its "efficient use". In this context, the research precisely focuses on the analysis of one of these 'real
basic factors', ventilation, highlighting 'if' and 'how' the anemometric factor is considered in the regeneration processes
of consolidated urban space
Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage and SDGs. Research and interviews about the role of museums as cultural hubs for the sustainable management, accessibility, and climate change in the context of urban regeneration processes
Sustainable development is a process of change that sees culture as the cornerstone and the key that facilitates the reading of the dynamics in place, to know and balance the long-term nature of the SGDs. Cultural heritage, city, and museum are extremely interconnected, and the museum should play a fundamental role in this context as a social third space able to respond flexibly and resiliently to SDGs localization process. To understand how to act it is neces-sary to know how museums perceive the SDGs, if and how they incorporate them into their policies and what are the forecasts in response to the general urban crisis we are experiencing. Starting from a vast literature, specific ob-jectives and targets were selected, interviews were conducted aimed at specific stakeholders, an assessment of the percentage of incidence for each target was obtained, as well as were extrapolated keywords useful to feed the dia-logue between institutions operating in culture-led urban regeneration
In order to understand the variability and changes taking place, the ability to observe and understand each component of the energy balance of the urban fabric, from the local to the global scale, is fundamental, based on the monitoring and analysis of climatic-environmental factors, as a basis for correct planning operations, especially in view of the construction of simulated dynamic models that will help in the description of the territory and its transformation. The research and
experimentation conducted on the city of Rome presented here are part of the aim of providing not only useful data and information for the knowledge of the factors involved, but they are also an opportunity for reflection for the construction of simulated dynamic models according to a digital twin logic
Microclima urbano: ventilazione naturale e ridefinizione dello spazio della città storica / Urban microclimate: natural ventilation and space redefinition of historic city. (rivista classe A)
The evaluation of the ‘climatically balanced’ structure of a city is extremely complex to define. The thermal mass is represented by the buildings themselves, envisaged as the walls of the urban room, with different porosity percentages related to the building density, where it is impossible to think in terms of isolated or isolable spaces. We then add a further degree of difficulty to the problem, not related the new but to the existing that has to be protected. In this context, from the data acquisition to the solution’s architectonical definition (fig. 1), the main focus is right on the analysis of the collected data and on its evaluation that has to be exact and synergic, necessary ground for a correct 'critical choice'. Only by working in synergy and not against the forces of nature, we will be able to take advantage of the potentialities (Olgyay 1981), while analysing the relationship between urban morphology and climate according to the various reading levels.
These themes, which have never ceased to be current, are the basic preconditions in which my research develops, aimed at the microclimate evaluation of the historic fabric of Rome, with a specific attention to the study of air masses and their contribution to a microclimatic improvement for a possible redefinition of the urban space
Technological upgrading in recent decades has allowed, at the urban level, the definition of new tools to address issues related to climate change. The research focuses on methodologies and technolo-gies that are useful for the definition of new morphometric classifications (RLCZ, Rome Local Climate Zone) and the consequent construction of specific parametric models for the fabric of the historic city, starting from the case study on the city of Rome. This is to support an informed design-making pro-cess that is compatible with the peculiarities of complex fabrics. The proposed method-ology and tools, which can be tested on similar scenarios or recalibrated for different realities, can provide an additional piece of knowledge, integrated with ongoing inter-national experiments
Environmental quality of the historical city: the wind strategy challenge / Qualità ambientale della città storica: la sfida della wind strategy (rivista classe A)
The research focuses on the potential and limits of natural ventilation, analysing with a critical look possible design effects in a specific field of investigation, the historical city. The proposed wind strategy, through the calibration of existing instruments (computational and parametric), the definition of new and specific morphometric factors, the definition of prescriptive and performance indicators, speditive sheets of analysis and planning direction, aims to provide tools more effective and responsive to the peculiarities of the historical fabric, which help designers and administration to integrate the wind factor from the earliest stages of thought out transformation of the consolidated urban space
