How to Explain the University of Cambridge to the Sultan? Words, Expressions, and Definition Structures on the European University and Education System Observed in the Book of Traveler "Seyyâhnâme" Dated 1835 Cambridge Üniversitesini Padişaha Nasil Anlatmali? 1835 Tarihli Seyyâhnâme'de Avrupa Üniversite ve Eǧitim Sistemine Dair Kelime, Ifade ve Tanimlama Yapilari
© Turkiyat Mecmuasi. All rights reserved. The Book of Traveler "Seyyâhnâme," written during 1835-1837 by an Ottoman statesman, describes the British education system, economy, politics, and technology during the period and explains general features of the city of London. The work remains unpublished and is currently in the form of a handwritten manuscript - the autographed copy of which was presented to the sultan of the time. Although the work states that it also aims to highlight the diplomatic tactics of the British State in order to seize India and the differences between England and France, information on these issues is relatively limited. While providing information about England and London, the author includes many statistical tables and watercolor paintings that we believe he produced. In addition, through statistical tables, the work provides the names of universities, their number of students and teachers, and the number of books in their libraries. Furthermore, the work offers unique information on university education and administration and teaching practices within the University of Cambridge, where we believe the author studied at the time. In this context, we examine the choices of the author's terminology and expression strategies about the British and French education system by identifying and analyzing the words, phrases, and morpho-structural elements that emerge within the text
Seyahatname-i Avrupa yazarı Mehmed Rauf’un “Avrupa Layihası” İsimli Basılmamış Eseri Üzerine - On the Unpublished Work “The Discourse of Europe” by Mehmed Rauf the Author of The Travelogue of Europe
ÖZ Büyük Londra Sanayi Fuarına yaptığı seyahatinde Avrupa’nın birçok şehrini ziyaret eden Mehmed Rauf, anılarını Seyahatname-i Avrupa isimli eserinde anlatırken Avrupa’nın ekonomik, siyasi ve sosyal özelliklerine dair görüşlerini elyazması hâlindeki “Avrupa Layihası”nda açıklamıştır. Anahtar kelimeler: Avrupa Layihası, Seyahatname-i Avrupa, Rıfat Paşazade Mehmed Rauf (1829-1883), 1851 Büyük Londra Sanayi Fuarı, Tanzimat bürokratları, Türklerde Avrupa imajı, 19. yüzyılda Avrupa ABSTRACT Mehmed Rauf, who was a young Ottoman bureaucrat and traveller, visited many cities and sites of Europe during his travels to the Great Exhibition of London in 1851. According to the author, in the report, the strength of the European states was based on the welfare of the people, the increase of the population and the investments in urban construction. In order to succeed in these areas, European states viewed the security of life and property and the protection of chastity and honour of people as the most important state responsibilities. Tanzimat’a Giden Yolda Köprüler, Dilicanslar, Trenler ve Balonlar: 1835 Tarihli Seyyâhnâme’de Modern Ulaşım Altyapısı ve Araçlarına Dair Resimler ve Tasvir Stratejileri
The work entitled Seyyâhnâme presents a unique travel account as it provides detailed information about England and France and contains watercolour paintings on the subjects explained. The work was probably written by Mehmed Emin Pasha (d. 1851), a mühendishane military school-educated Ottoman statesman, between 1835-1837, at a time when he was studying at Cambridge University. There are two copies of the work, one of which is the author’s original copy (autograph) and the other is a later copy, and both copies are kept at the Library of Rare Works, Istanbul University. Theauthor enriched his work with 18 watercolour paintings to embody the subjects he expressed which include the modern military service, education, transportation infrastructure and modern vehicles that he witnessed in England. 14 of these paintings reflect modern transportation infrastructure such as streets, bridges and tunnels, as well as new-style passenger cars, steam trains and balloons, of which the author saw the originals or paintings in England. One of these images is a modern shopping street, showing London’s gas-powered street lamps, three of them show England’s prominent steel and suspension bridges, two of them tunnels pass under the river, one modern harbour and dock structure, two modern postal and passenger cars, two of them steam train and tram vehicles, and three of them balloons which had already started to be used for transportation purposes. It is understood that the author drew the pictures with new interpretations by using the pictures published in England as engravings or lithographs as templates. The author states that the subjects he describes are as seen in the pictures, and in this way, he implies that he is the painter of these pictures. This article examines how the author’s descriptions of transportation infrastructure and modern vehicles, which he describes with literary descriptions, are reflected in watercolour paintings
