Efficacy of Paromomycin Sulphate for the Treatment of Cryptosporidiosis in Goat Kids
Background: This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of paromomycin sulphate on serum amyloid A (SAA) and haptoglobin (Hp) in Cryptosporidiosis in goat kids. Methods: In the study, stool samples were taken from the kids and Cryptosporidium was detected via the rapid test kit. Then, by examining the same stool samples microscopically, we included 9 kids in the study and 50 mg/kg of paromomycin sulphate was administered to the kids in which Cryptosporidium spp. was detected for five days as a treatment. For the SAA and Hp estimation, blood samples were drawn from the kids in the pre and post treatment stages. Result: In the kids with Cryptosporidium, the concentrations of SAA and Hp were measured as (SAA; 17.10 +/- 4.18 ng/mL Hp; 2.68 +/- 1.08 mu g/mL) in pre-treatment and as (SAA; 9,71 +/- 4,13 ng/mL, Hp; 1,23 +/- 0,64 mu g/mL) in the post-treatment stage (p<0,05). In accordance with these findings, we suggest that routine measurements of SAA and Hp concentrations of the goat kids with diarrhea due to cryptosporidiosis could be of value in follow up of treatment, determining the severity of the infection, selection of therapy and monitoring the efficacy of the preferred treatment protocol and in detection of subclinical infections

Afyonkarahisar Yöresi Köpeklerde Diroflariozis, Lyme, Anaplazmozis ve Ehrlichiozisin Prevalansı
Background: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of dirofilariasis, Lyme, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis in sheltered dogs in Afyonkarahisar. Methods: The data were obtained and evaluated from 400 dogs (female, n = 246; male, n = 154) of different breeds and at different ages that were referred to Afyon Kocatepe University Animal Hospital. Accordingly, ovariohysterectomy (n = 196), castration (n = 113), skin disease (n = 113), diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue and anorexia (n = 37), lameness (n = 13), transmissible venereal tumor (n = 9), ascites (n = 2), pregnancy diagnosis (n = 2), mammary tumor (n = 1) and conjunctivitis (n = 1) were determined in dogs. Blood samples of dogs were taken to hematology and biochemistry after the first clinical examination of dogs. SNAP 4Dx (Idexx) Quick test kit was used to diagnose dirofilariasis, Lyme, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis. Result: The prevalence of anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, dirofilariasis, and Lyme was 1.25%, 0.75%, 0.75%, and 0%, respectively. Although the prevalence of anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, and dirofilariasis is low, the results of the study suggested that these zoonotic diseases should still be evaluated as a risk factor for both humans and animals which live in this region as the disease spreads through vector

The effects of the demographic characteristics of pet owners on their animal ownership and care behaviors
In this study, the answers were obtained and evaluated from the questionnaires that were applied to the owners of cats and dogs in at least one province from each region, covering all geographical regions throughout T & uuml;rkiye. To do this, the original questions for this survey were prepared to evaluate the information about the marital status, gender, age range, education level, place of residence (province, district, town, etc.), economic income level, animal species, and animal care/ownership knowledge level of cat and dog owners. In the study, a face-to-face questionnaire was applied to a total of 1000 participants in the cities of Hatay, Mersin, Elaz & imath;& gbreve;, Erzurum, Kars, Van, Afyonkarahisar, Ayd & imath;n, Bal & imath;kesir, & Idot;zmir, U & scedil;ak, Gaziantep, & Scedil;anl & imath;urfa, Ankara, K & imath;r & imath;kkale, Konya, & Ccedil;orum, Bursa, & Idot;stanbul, Tekirda & gbreve;. A total of 962 (96.2%) participants completed the survey in its entirety, while 38 participants were excluded from the evaluation due to incomplete responses. According to the evaluation results of the data obtained; it has been revealed that different variables such as gender, income level, education level, and age of animal owners are highly effective on variables such as the specie, care and ownership knowledge level, and responsibility. As a result, the awareness level of individuals who own cats and dogs throughout T & uuml;rkiye was measured under the leadership of different variables, and a very comprehensive study was put forward.Afyon Kocatepe University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit [17.KARIYER.152]This research has been supported within the content of the project no 17.KARIYER.152 by Afyon Kocatepe University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit
Nationwide prospective audit for the evaluation of appendicitis risk prediction models in adults: Right iliac fossa treatment (RIFT) - Turkey
Background: Appendicitis is the most prevalent surgical emergency. The negative appendicectomy rate and diagnostic uncertainty are important concerns. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of current appendicitis risk prediction models in patients with acute right iliac fossa pain. Methods: A nationwide prospective observational study was conducted, including all consecutive adult patients who presented with right iliac fossa pain. Diagnostic, clinical and negative appendicectomy rate data were recorded. The Alvarado score, Appendicitis Inflammatory Response (AIR), Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Appendicitis (RIPASA) and Adult Appendicitis Score systems were calculated with collected data to classify patients into risk categories. Diagnostic value and categorization performance were evaluated, with use of risk category-based metrics including 'true positive rate' (percentage of appendicitis patients in the highest risk category), 'failure rate' (percentage of patients with appendicitis in the lowest risk category) and 'categorization resolution' (true positive rate/failure rate). Results: A total of 3358 patients from 84 centres were included. Female patients were less likely to undergo surgery than men (71.5% versus 82.5% respectively; relative risk 0.866, 95% c.i. 0.834 to 0.901, P 0.001); with a three-fold higher negative appendicectomy rate (11.3% versus 4.1% respectively; relative risk 2.744, 95% c.i. 2.047 to 3.677, P 0.001). Ultrasonography was utilized in 56.8% and computed tomography in 75.2% of all patients. The Adult Appendicitis Score had the best diagnostic performance for the whole population; however, only RIPASA was significant in men. All scoring systems were successful in females patients, but Adult Appendicitis Score had the highest area under the receiver operating characteristic curve value. The RIPASA and the Adult Appendicitis Score had the best categorization resolution values, complemented by their exceedingly low failure rates in both male and female patients. Alvarado and AIR had extremely high failure rates in men. Conclusion: The negative appendicectomy rate was low overall, but women had an almost three-fold higher negative appendicectomy rate despite lower likelihood to undergo surgery. The overuse of imaging tests, best exemplified by the 75.2% frequency of patients undergoing computed tomography, may lead to increased costs. Risk-scoring systems such as RIPASA and Adult Appendicitis Score appear to be superior to Alvarado and AIR. © 2024 The Author(s).
