Tubaro: “A Multiview Trinocular System for Automatic 3D Object Modeling and Rendering
For several applications of close-range photogrammetry, there is a growing interest in systems that are able to automatically perform a 3-D reconstruction of objects from stereo correspondences on CCD camera views. For such applications, a full-3D reconstruction of the object is often very desirable. In fact, most automatic systems for 3-D reconstruction based on stereo matching can only reconstruct the front side of the imaged scene. In order to obtain a full-3D reconstruction, it is necessary to observe the scene from several significant viewpoints. Furthermore, an exact determination of position and orientation of the cameras for all considered viewpoints (camera-motion) becomes crucial. In this paper we present a low-cost, high-accuracy, full-3D reconstruction system based on a calibrated set of three standard-resolution CCD cameras. No special positioning devices are needed as the camera-motion is retrieved for each position of the trinocular system from stereo-matching of unconstrained fiducial marks
Calcification onset/progression correlates with phospholipid intracellular accumulation/rearrangement in mineralizing aortic valves
Degenerative calcification occurring in failing heart bioprosthetic valves is still poorly understood. In "in vivo" calcification models, mineralization onset takes place at level of cells (1) or cell nuclei (2). In porcine aortic valves subdermally implanted in rat subcutis for 6 weeks, we found that calcification correlates with the presence of peculiar acidic phospholipid layers (PPLs) surrounding cells and matrix vesicles (3-5). Here, we investigated valve mineralization after shorter implantation times to understand how PPLs form and correlate with mineralization progress. Chemical analyses revealed initial calcium deposition before 2-day-long implantation and its linear increase with time. Ultrastructural observations revealed lipid accumulation within more and more numerous vacuoles filling cell cytoplasm in 2-day and and 1-week implanted valves. Initial PPL formation was observed in 1-week implanted valves, whereas PPLs involved most cells after longer implantation times. These data suggest that (a) direct correlation does exist between calcification rate and acidic phospholipid accumulation and (b) PPL genesis is due to distinct intracellular modifications which seem to depend on a peculiar pattern of phospholipidosis. Future assessments of overactive bladder
Overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) is a symptom syndrome including urinary urgency often associated with frequency, nocturia and sometimes incontinence. Clinical assessment of OAB is based on patient self-reporting. Unfortunately many patients struggle to distinguish between urgency and the urge to void and others do not discriminate between urgency and stress urinary incontinence. Because of the current lack of objectivity in the diagnosis process, we believe that discovery of a reliable biomarker for OAB would be helpful in diagnosing the syndrome, monitoring response to treatment and quantifying treatment efficacy. Detrusor overactivity (DO) is one of the underlying causes of OAB, however, it is only identified in 50 % of patients and detection is measured by urodynamics which is an invasive procedure. To date, detrusor wall thickness and levels of nerve growth factor (NGF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), prostaglandins, urine cytokines and C-reactive protein have been shown to be altered in patients with OAB and DO and thus may be useful as potential biomarkers for OAB. In this article we review the latest research on OAB biomarkers and discuss the future of biomarkers in the diagnosis and treatment of OAB. Although several putative biomarkers have been demonstrated to correlate with the diagnosis of OAB, future work is required to assess their value in diagnostics and assessment of treatment efficacy. © Touch Briefings 2012
