    This chapter gives the basic conclusions about energy-efficient train operation covering energy-efficient train driving, energy-efficient train timetabling, regenerative braking, energy storage systems and power supply networks.     Introduction to Energy-Efficient Train Operation

    Railway, as one of the most energy-efficient transport, plays an essential role in improving the world’s energy and environmental sustainability. Statistics about rail share of transport activities and the corresponding energy consumption will demonstrate the energy efficiency of railway and indicate the potential of developing railway transport. Therefore, this chapter will provide an overview of the railway's energy consumption and traffic volume shares. Statistics presented in this chapter show that railway energy consumption decreased in these decades while its transport volume kept stable, and the traffic volume share of the railway is extremely large in urban transport. To achieve the goal of carbon neutralization, the European Union and many countries have conducted research projects on railway energy conservation. The technologies developed in these projects include energy-efficient train driving, integrated timetabling, using regenerative braking energy, etc. A summary of these technologies is also given, along with their potential energy savings, which range from 1 to 25%. This book will analyse and illustrate the whole systems processes of train operation with optimisation solutions.     Impact damage of composite laminates with high-speed waterjet

    Rain erosion may cause substantial damage to aircrafts during supersonic flight. Such event is investigated here via high-speed waterjet impact on composite laminates. An experimental setup is developed to produce waterjets with the speed up to 700m/s and a finite element model of the waterjet-composite impact event is established. The consistency of experiment and simulation results validates the adopted numerical methods. The distribution of the water-hammer pressure is non-uniform and the maximum pressure occurs near the contact periphery when the water is about to eject laterally. After a high-speed (300∼560m/s) waterjet impacts a composite laminate, the impacted surface depression is observed, and the typical surface damage presents a central region with no visible surface damage surrounded by a faded “failure ring” with resin removal, matrix cracking and minor fiber fracture. Delamination occurs at the interfaces of adjacent layers with unequal dimensions and longitudinal matrix cracking appears on the back surface. Both the velocity and the diameter of waterjets are crucial factors on CFRP damage extents.     The term hao-hsien or huo-hao (火耗) means the loss in weight caused in the process of minting the silver coins. After the payment in silver of the land and poll taxes became the rule at the middle of the Ming dynasty, a kind of additional tax called huo-han came into existence. Generally speaking, it was about 10 per cent of the amount of the regular taxes, but sometimes it reached 30 to 50 per cent. While the regular taxes constituted the income of the Government, the huo-hao was taken by the rural tax collectors, who used about 20 per cent of it for adminstrative purposes, another 20 per cent for their own living, and the rest for bribery to their superiors. The latter gave, in turn, part of it to officials in the Central Government. From the economic viewpoint, the whole bureacratic system of the Ch'ing Government was operated on the basis of this huo-hao income. Emperor Shuo-chin tried to abolish the practice in vain, while Emperor K'ang-hsi was compeled to recongnize it semi-officially. The present author attempts to clarify why and how Emperor Yung-cheng made efforts to use the hitherto privately appropriated huo-hao for the benefit of the Government treasury, and to what extent was he successful in his endevors

    Dynamic Estimation of Vital Signs with mm-wave FMCW Radar

    In this paper, we propose a method for continuous monitoring of vital signs-in particular, respiration frequency-with a commercial mm-wave radar. The nearly constant frequency (NCF) model is adopted to represent chest displacement due to respiration and simulate radar response. Based on this model, an extended Kalman filter (EKF) based estimator is developed to track the breathing frequency of a person. The impact of dynamic model parameters is investigated in numerical simulation. The possibility to track breathing frequency with the proposed method is demonstrated by experimental data processing.
