EFFECT OF DIETARY STARCH LEVEL AND SOURCE ON PERFORMANCE, CAECAL FERMENTATION AND MEAT QUALITY IN GROWING RABBITS

[EN] To evaluate the effects of starch level and source on growth performance, caecal fermentation, and carcass and meat quality, six diets were formulated including different percentage of barley (B) or corn (C) or equal proportions of the two cereals (BC) to obtain moderate (M) or high (H) starch levels, and fed to 96 rabbits from 35 d of age until slaughter (73 d). Within starch level, B and C diets presented similar chemical composition and nutritive value while starch digestibility was higher in B diets. The starch source did not affect growth performance and meat quality and showed weak effects on caecal fermentation, apart from a higher proportion of valerate in rabbits fed diets C (P<0.05). According to cereal inclusion rate, M diets were lower in starch (17.0 vs 20.6% DM) and digestible energy concentration (12.1 vs 12.6 MJ/kg DM) and higher in fibre concentration (ADL: 4.7 vs 3.9% DM) than H diets. The starch level affected growth performance: H diets stimulated weight gain (41.7 vs 43.5 g/d; P<0.05) and improved feed conversion (P<0.001) in comparison with M diets but did not affect health status or caecal fermentation. High-starch diets also increased dressing percentage (60.9 vs 61.5%; P<0.05), and cooking losses and share press force of meat.Xiccato, G.; Trocino, A.; Sartori, A.; Queaque, P. (2002). The conservation of biological material in biobanks is a fast-growing phenomenon. One of the toughest challenges is the informed consent’s management, in the view of balance the rights of the donators and the scientific progress. After providing a short overview of the data protection law, this article analyses a controversial Italian legal case – SharDNA case – that raised many problems about the informed consent’s management, especially in the event of a change of data controller. In particular, the essay analyzes the various answers given by the judges in the various levels of judgment up to the recent ending in the Supreme Court

Italia, un sistema de producción cunicola integrada

Italy is the world leader in intensive rabbit production, but its production chain is characterized by a low associative degree within each segment and the scarce integration among different segments. An official program of collection and diffusion of technical and economic data is lacking. Producers of commercial hybrids are generally independent from breeders and feed producers and transformation industries are not horizontally integrated. Notwithstanding the presence of a large breeder association, Coniglio Veneto-Avitalia, with about 400 breeders corresponding to 20% of Italian rabbit production, its associates continue to buy the production factors and sell the animals independently each other in the free market. A part of the market of rabbit meat (25%) is integrated vertically by food industries; among them, two main feed producers, Veronesi y Martini, also control slaughter and transformation structures and are pushing to enlarge this form of integration. The last segment of the chain, i.e. distribution, is fractionated with differences between the organized distribution and the traditional one. In our paper, the main aspects of Italian rabbit productive system and the organization of production chain are summarized and the characteristics of the main integration contracts are presented, discussing about the major advantages of both breeders and rabbit feed and meat transformation industries
