Adam Ferguson\'s Political Philosophy: an interpretation

    No full text
The thesis aims to demonstrate how Adam Ferguson builds his political philosophy, especially in the Essay on the History of Civil Society, in order to evaluate the progress of modern commercial societies; this assessment is made, particularly in moral and political terms. In order to do so, the author makes an epistemological division between physical law and moral law, which allows him, at the same time, to investigate empirically man and society, from the influences received from Bacon and Newton, in addition to his contemporaries Hume, Buffon and Smith, and establish a normative moral philosophy, close to the old tradition and concerned with the establishment of rules of conduct for man. Fergusonian political philosophy is an expression of these two biases

Limitations of fasting indices in the measurement of insulin sensitivity in Afro-Caribbean adults

In young Afro-Caribbean adults, HOMA-IR compared poorly with other measures of insulin sensitivity. It remains important to determine whether similar findings occur in a more insulin resistant population. However, HOMA-IR correlated with clinical measures of insulin sensitivity (i.e. adiposity), so it may still be useful in epidemiological studies

Education and welfare in professional football academies and centres of excellence: A sociological study

    No full text
A career as a professional footballer has long been regarded as a highly sought after occupation for many young males within the UK and, against this backdrop, since the 1970s increasing attention has come to be placed on the way young players are identified and developed within professional clubs. Particular concern has been expressed over the number of players who, having been developed by professional clubs, fail to secure a professional contract, and the ways in which clubs should help young players safeguard their futures through alternative career training. There, have, however, been very few studies that have analyzed the education and welfare provisions that are offered within professional football Academies and Centres of Excellence, and fewer still that have done this from a sociological perspective. By drawing upon the figurational sociology of Norbert Elias, concepts derived from symbolic interactionism, and existing work in the sociology of youth, the objective of this study is to examine the realities of young players' day-to-day working-lives, the experiences they have of the educational programmes they follow, and the welfare-related matters that arise within present-day Academies and CoE. Using data generated by self-completion questionnaires and focus groups with 303 players in 21 Academies and CoE in England and Wales, the findings of the study suggest that players continue to be socialized into a largely anti-academic culture that has traditionally underpinned the world of professional football, and in which the demonstration of a 'good attitude' and commitment to the more central members of players' interdependencies (especially coaches and managers) dominated all other concerns. Indeed, it was also clear that the deep-seated values players held in relation to the professional game as part of their individual and group habituses were shaped by the figurations into which they were born and had been developed during the more impressionable phases of childhood and youth. Players' welfare needs were significantly compromised by the strong degree of suspicion and obvious degree of mistrust that characterized their relationship with club management, which emanated from players' fears that confidential matters would always 'get back' to others inside the club. This was exacerbated, in almost all cases, by players' observations that they were treated as if they were 'bottom of the club' and whose welfare needs were not generally well understood by those working within Academies and CoE

Copyright and media releases: Implications for professional use: Media release: Who owns it?

Ferguson, AE ORCiD: 0000-0002-8734-5735Although words themselves cannot be owned it is when they become a compilation of words authors would normally become the owner, author and therefore retain copyright over the work. Currently this does not relate to the media release produced by public relations professionals. While it is not the purpose of this book to simplify the media release authorship, ownership and copyright issue because it is a complex one, it is the intention of this book to raise and discuss the complex relationship that exists between the media release, public relations practitioners and journalists because it is exists outside the normal boundaries of ownership, authorship and copyright. The automatic assumption of authorship, ownership and copyright being waived and therefore assigned to another person(s) may have long term ramifications that have not yet been realized

Laboratory estimation of fracture compliance of a fluid-filled fracture using AVO response of a nonwelded interface

    No full text
We explore the potential of multi-angle AVO inversion of P-P and P-S reflections from a fracture to estimate fracture proper- ties. Although AVO analysis of welded interface like geologi- cal layer boundaries is common, the use of AVO variations for nonwelded boundaries like fractures is yet to be investigated. We conduct laboratory experiments to measure reflection re- sponses of dry and wet fractures. The observed P-P reflec- tions of the fracture and the fracture aperture are very well pre- dicted by the nonwelded interface model. We invert the angle- dependent P-P reflectivity of the fracture to estimate both nor- mal and tangential fracture compliances. The estimated value of the normal compliance is accurate, and it is also possible to obtain the value of the non-zero tangential compliance. We find that supplementing the information of converted P-S re- flections in the AVO inversion greatly improves the estimate of the tangential compliance. The calculated compliance ra- tio clearly shows the existence of fluid in the fracture. This finding can be crucial for new applications in a wide range of scale - from earthquake seismology, deep and shallow seismic exploration, to nondestructive material testing.Applied Geophysics and Petrophysic
