Tree-Ring Dating and Archaeology in the American Southwest
The relationship between archaeology and tree-ring dating, or dendrochronology, is reviewed. Until the past decade, the applications of tree-ring dating to archaeological problems had not been thoroughly exploited. Selecting and Characterizing Tree-Ring Chronologies for Dendroclimatic Analysis
A widely spaced grid of tree-ring chronologies most suitable for dendroclimatic analysis of western North America is selected objectively on the basis of 1) numbers in the sample, length in years, and site locations, 2) statistical characteristics of the chronologies, and 3) correlation of chronologies with those on neighboring sites. The chronology statistics are then analyzed to characterize the quality of the selected set. The procedures used in this study are recommended for future climatic analysis to assure objectivity in the selection of quality tree-ring data and to allow comparisons of the statistics for new chronologies to the established data sets.This item is part of the Tree-Ring Research (formerly Tree-Ring Bulletin) archive. Author-Driven Approaches to Computational Narrative Design for Games
Accessible Head Mounted Displays (HMD) have provided mass access to Extended Reality (XR) content as never before. One of the key complaints from HMD owners, however, is the lack of substantial high-quality content (Moore 2017). Coupled with the domain-specific topic of presence, which describes a state beyond the concept of immersion instead with the user feeling part of the virtual world. Utilizing traditional production techniques cost and the duration of the resultant product are inextricably linked, although some progress reducing manual hours has been made with the introduction of Procedural Content Generation (PCG); the focus of this shift has been on asset creation rather than narratives (Kapadia et al. 2017). While PCG can reduce the cost of production it does not however directly increase the duration of the game. The current solution from developers has been to implement game mechanics to increase the duration of the game, leading to a rise in arcade-style wave shooters (Anon 2018), however, this solution is not applicable to long-form content such as narrative-based Role Playing Games (RPG), story-based first-person action games and interactive narratives. The intended contribution of this paper is both to describe the challenges to the academic knowledge in procedurally generated content and computational narratives but is also about studying how those approaches can be democratized, enabling wider adoption within the content creation community, with a view to their eventual use within non-entertainment sectors

A Microcomputer-Based Tree-Ring Measuring System
A brief discussion is presented on a new measuring system based on an APPLE microcomputer. Aspects of both hardware and software are considered, with emphasis on the software that provides operator interaction. Tests of the RCS Method for Preserving Low-Frequency Variability in Long Tree-Ring Chronologies
To preserve multi-centennial length variability in annual tree-ring chronologies, the Regional Curve Standardization (RCS) method calculates anomalies from a regionally common, non-climatic age-trend function. The influence of various factors on the estimation of the regional curve (RC) and resulting RCS- chronology is discussed. These factors are: the method of calculating anomalies from the age-trend function, estimation of the true pith offset, the number of series used, species composition, and site characteristics. By applying RCS to a collection of millennium-length tree-ring data sets, the potential and limitations of the RCS method are investigated. RCS is found to be reasonably robust with respect to tested factors, suggesting the method is a suitable tool for preserving low-frequency variance in long tree-ring chronologies.This item is part of the Tree-Ring Research (formerly Tree-Ring Bulletin) archive. Tree parsing with synchronous tree-adjoining grammars
Restricting the input or the output of a grammar-induced translation to a given set of trees plays an important role in statistical machine translation. The problem for practical systems is to find a compact (and in particular, finite) representation of said restriction. For the class of synchronous tree adjoining grammars, partial solutions to this problem have been described, some being restricted to the unweighted case, some to the monolingual case. We introduce a formulation of this class of grammars which is effectively closed under input and output restrictions to regular tree languages, i.e., the restricted translations can again be represented by grammars. Moreover, we present an algorithm that constructs these grammars for input and output restriction, which is inspired by Earley’s algorithm
