No full textThis year’s annual Nulungu lecture at the University of Notre Dame Australia’s Broome Campus will be delivered by Deborah Cheetham, Indigenous Soprano, actor and author of the internationally acclaimed play, White Baptist Abba Fan. She is a graduate of the NSW Conservatorium of Music and Julliard School of Music.
Since her international debut in 1997 Ms Cheetham has performed in the theatres and concert halls of United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and throughout Australia. At the Sydney Olympics in 2000, Ms Cheetham performed her original composition, Dali Mana Gamarada.
During the 2001 Centenary of Federation celebrations Ms Cheetham performed in several major events including the January 1st Concert in Sydney’s Centennial Park when she appeared as a soloist and speaker. She performed with Argentine tenor, Jose Cura at the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup in 2003. This was broadcast to a worldwide audience of more than one billion. In 2005, Deborah added to her list of international credit engagements in Paris, including performances at the Australian Embassy and the La Cigale in the Marais
In 2006 Deborah was a recipient of the Australia Council, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts fellowship. The fellowship enabled Deborah to write, direct and produce a 21st century Australian opera, Pecan Summer. The work created opportunities and demonstrated the talents of Indigenous singers and musicians, actors, writers and technicians.
On 22nd February this year Deborah performed the national anthem at the memorial service for the victims of the Black Saturday bushfires. Of the service Deborah said , ‘Joined by a massed choir of over 500 voices I was honoured to pay my respect to the victims and survivors of these terrible fires by singing Advance Australia Fair.’
Deborah will be delivering the Nulungu Lecture at the Broome Campus of The University of Notre Dame, 88 Guy Street, Broome, on Thursday 20 August at 5.00pm. The Nulungu Reconciliation Lecture is to be an annual event on the Broome Campus where key speakers will be invited to address issues of Reconciliation that shape contemporary Aboriginal and Australian thought and experience. The Interaction among Microbiota, Epigenetic Regulation, and Air Pollutants in Disease Prevention
No full textEnvironmental pollutants can influence microbiota variety, with important implications for the general wellbeing of organisms. In subjects at high-risk of cancer, gut, and lung microbiota are distinct from those of low-risk subjects, and disease progression is associated with microbiota alterations. As with many inflammatory diseases, it is the combination of specific host and environmental factors in certain individuals that provokes disease outcomes. The microbiota metabolites influence activity of epigenetic enzymes. The knowledge of the mechanisms of action of environmental pollution now includes not only the alteration of the gut microbiota but also the interaction between different human microbiota niches such as the lung–gut axis. The epigenetic regulations can reprogram differentiated cells in response to environmental changes. The microbiota can play a major role in the progression and suppression of several epigenetic diseases. Accordingly, the maintenance of a balanced microbiota by monitoring the environmental stimuli provides a novel preventive approach for disease prevention. Metagenomics technologies can be utilized to establish new mitigation approaches for diseases induced by polluted environments. The purpose of this review is to examine the effects of particulate matter exposure on the progression of disease outcomes as related to the alterations of gut and lung microbial communities and consequent epigenetic modifications
The Illuminated Lyric of Lafracoth
No full textA medieval historical fiction in dramatic form for older adolescents and adults, this verse play depicts a person of conscience in early 12th century Ireland. This work is intended for late adolescents and adults who have either acquired or are engaged in higher education. The author envisions uses in classrooms, drama and book clubs in which conscience sensitive character analyses and discussions of moral life in and out of religious contexts are deemed worthy of pursuit.

In this illustrated version, artist Deborah C. Galvin was asked to create five illuminations for the letters P, A, C, E and M which figure prominently in the conflicted story of Lafracoth and her father. Deborah obliged but was not satisfied with just five. Over the two years 2008-2010, she completed sixteen times that many. In 2012, these were exhibited in a crafted parchment paper version of the manuscript at The Helen Beiser MD Art Show during the 59th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in San Francisco and again that same year at the Fourth Annual Indiana University School of Medicine Art Exhibition in Indianapolis
Analyses of Methanogenic Population as Key Indicator for Anaerobic Digestion: A Case-Study in the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste Treatment

The anaerobic digestion of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) is a treatment biologically optimizable. The analysis of the microbial balance within the digester allows not only to describe and improve the efficiency of the system but also to foresee potential variations after biochemical interventions. This work aims to highlight methanogenic population variations in two similar parallel digesters to identify bio-indicators for digestion performance after the inclusion of an additive.
Methods
The analysed industrial case study involved the two parallel, pilot-scale, bio-digesters of ACEA Pinerolese Industriale. They had analogous design and fed by the same OFMSW except for an additive inclusion. The analyses by qRT-PCR, on both bio-digesters, have been performed to determine an impact of the additive on the growth and metabolic activity of total methanogens, Methanosarcina spp., Methanocorpuscolum spp., and Methanospirillus spp.
Results
Collected data showed that the addition of biopolymers extracted from compost produced both total methanogens and Methanosarcina decrease (7.67 vs. 7.48 and 6.05 vs. 5.69 Log gene copies/mL sludge respectively, T-test p < 0.01) affecting slightly the methane yield (-8%). Methanosarcina was the highest expressed methanogen; however, the results suggested the involvement of a highly complex and heterogeneous methanogen community.
Conclusions
Total methanogens and active Methanosarcina modulations are able to highlight major bio-methane production even if their shift is slight. Globally only 3–4% of the present and 12–13% of the active methanogens were described. However, biological approach can supply a proxy of production performance of the digester also concerning the feeding peculiarities
