Estimation and Removal of Clock Skew from Network Delay Measurements
Packet delay and loss traces are frequently used by network engineers, as well as network applications, to analyze network performance. The clocks on the end-systems used to measure the delays, however, are not always synchronized, and this lack of synchronization reduces the accuracy of these measurements. Therefore, estimating and removing relative skews and offsets from delay measurements between sender and receiver clocks are critical to the accurate assessment and analysis of network performance. In this paper we introduce a linear programming-based algorithm to estimate the clock skew in network delay measurements and compare it with three other algorithms. We show that our algorithm has time complexity of O(N), leaves the delay after the skew removal positive, and is robust in the sense that the error margin of the skew estimate is independent of the magnitude of the skew. Measurement and Modelling of the Temporal Dependence in Packet Loss
Understanding and modelling packet loss in the Internet is especially relevant for the design and analysis of delay-sensitive multimedia applications. In this paper, we present analysis of 128 hours of endto -end unicast and multicast packet loss measurement. From these we selected 76 hours of stationary traces for further analysis. We consider the dependence as seen in the autocorrelation function of the original loss data as well as the dependence between good run lengths and loss run lengths. The correlation timescale is found to be 1000ms or less. We evaluate the accuracy of three models of increasing complexity: the Bernoulli model, the 2-state Markov chain model and the k-th order Markov chain model. Out of the 38 trace segments considered, the Bernoulli model was found to be accurate for 7 segments, the 2-state model was found to be accurate for 10 segments. DoS protection for a Pragmatic Multiservice Network Based on Programmable Networks

ideas of programmable networks. Active routers are capable of processing both
active and legacy packets. This scenario is vulnerable to a Denial of Service attack,
which consists in inserting false legacy packets into active routers. We
propose a mechanism for detecting the injection of fake legacy packets into active
routers. This mechanism consists in exchanging accounting information on
the traffic between neighboring active routers. The exchange of accounting information
must be carried out in a secure way using secure active packets. The
proposed mechanism is sensitive to the loss of packets. To deal with this problem
some improvements in the mechanism has been proposed. An important issue
is the procedure for discharging packets when an attack has been detected.
We propose an easy and efficient mechanism that would be improved in future

Real-time traffic transmissions over the internet
Multimedia applications require the transmission of real-time streams over a network. These streams often exhibit variable bandwidth requirements, and require high bandwidths and guarantees from the network. This creates problems whensuch streams are delivered over the Internet. To solve theseproblems, recently, a small set of differentiated services hasbeen introduced. Among these, Premium Service is suitable fortransmitting real-time stored stream (full knowledge of the streamcharacteristics). It uses a bandwidth allocation mechanism (BAM)based on the stream peak rate. Due to the variable bandwidthrequirement, the peak rate BAM can waste large amount ofbandwidth. In this paper we propose a new BAM that uses lessbandwidth than the peak rate BAM, while providing the sameservice. Our BAM does not affect the real-time stream qualityof service (QoS) and does not require any modification to thePremium Service Architecture. We also introduce several framedropping mechanisms that further reduce bandwidth consumptionsubject to a QoS constraint when coupled with the aboveBAM. The proposed BAM and the dropping mechanisms areevaluated using Motion JPEG and MPEG videos and are shownto be effective in reducing bandwidth requirements. Further, sinceVCR operations are very useful in video streaming, we propose amechanism that introduces these operations in our BAM. Throughsimulations we show the effectiveness of this mechanism
