The so-called ‘New York Goose Vase’ is a red-figure calyx krater produced in Southern Italy around the end of the fifth or the beginning of the fourth century BC, and now in the Metropolitan Museum. It shows a theatrical scene, evidently related to Attic comedy, as is apparent from the presence of a stage and three ‘comic’ characters: an old woman, on the stage, stretching out her right hand; an old man in the center standing on tip-toe with his hands above his head; and a young, unbearded man hold- ing his rod in a seemingly threatening manner. All of them have words coming out of their mouths, in a convention not unlike that of modern cartoon bubbles. They are speaking Attic Greek, except that the young man is saying something unintelligible (noraretteblo). This paper aims to offer an in-depth, up-dated analysis of the vase, which represents important evidence for actors in fifth/fourth-century Attic comedy playing foreign characters and speaking ‘barbarian’ languages (like the Persian Pseudartabas in Aristophanes’ Acharnians and the Triballian god in Aristophanes’ Birds; the Skythian archer in Aristophanes’ Thesmophoriazusae speaks a garbled pidgin Greek, not exam- ined in this paper [see now the excellent book of Di Bari 2013])

Biological Recursion and Digital Systems: Conceptual Tools for Analysing Man-Machine Interaction
The theory of numbers, the theory of computation and well-known biological and neurological studies on cognition and consciousness all indicate the concept of recursion as their common denominator. Mathematical recursion owes its meaning and properties to a dual relationship between its results, which always constitute a sequence, and the operator that generated them, which is instead invariant. This article proposes that this duality in recursion originates from the duality between the biological homeostatic equilibrium in living systems and the adaptive physico-chemical changes required to sustain such equilibria. Such duality gives order and meaning to the experiences of a living system. One of the many implications of this innovative perspective is that this duality can decouple computational results from our intuitive order relations, and that this can cause a rarefaction of the capacity of digital systems to convey communication and favour adaptation to the environment
Advantages of minimal access versus conventional aortic valve replacement in elderly or severely obese patients
Objective: The aim of our study was to investigate potential clinical ad- vantages of minimal access versus conventional surgical approach in older and severely obese patients undergoing isolated aortic valve re- placement (AVR).
Methods: One hundred thirty-five patients undergoing isolated primary AVR were enrolled. Propensity score matching was used to compare 42 selected patients operated on ministernotomy (MS, group B) with 42 selected patients operated on full sternotomy (FS, group A). Results: After propensity score matching, the two groups were compa- rable in terms of preoperative characteristics. Cardiopulmonary bypass time was significantly longer in MS group compared with the FS group [median (95% confidence level or CL), 103 (98.7–106.4) vs 94 (83.6–99) minutes, respectively; P = 0.0019]. No significant difference was observed in aortic cross-clamp time [median (95% CL), 73 (71.1–78.2) vs 69.5 (62.7–83) minutes; P = 0.4]. Significantly shorter ventilation time [median (95% CL), 13 (12–16.4) vs 24 (22–25) hours; P = 0.00018], intensive care unit stay [median (95% CL), 1 vs 2 days; P = 0.00017], and hospital stay [median (95% CL), 8.5 (8–10.8) vs 13.5 (11.1–14) days; P = 0.00030] were shown in the MS group. The age subgroup analysis showed that statistical significance for mechani- cal ventilation, intensive care unit, and hospital stay was specific for patients older than 75 years. The analysis of body mass index quar- tile showed that statistical significance for mechanical ventilation was specific for patients in the fourth quartile.
Conclusions: Minimal access AVR is a reproducible, safe, and effective surgical option in patients candidate for isolated AVR, and our study suggests a faster recovery when used in severely obese or older patient
Mascherati di zolfo. Spazi sociali e simboli rituali
