Regeneration of articular cartilage: Scaffold used in orthopedic surgery. A short handbook of available products for regenerative joints surgery
Get PDFIntroduction: Restoring defects of load-bearing connective tissues such as articular cartilage resulting from traumas, degenerative or age-related diseases remains a significant clinical challenge for clinicians due to the limited inherent repair capacity of articular cartilage. Tissue engineering has emerged as a potential alternative to the traditional surgical techniques, as it can be effectively used to regenerate bone, cartilage and the bone-cartilage interface. Several scaffold strategies have been developed and evaluated for osteochondral defect repair.
Materials and methods: The classes of polymers (scaffold-based proteins, scaffold-base polysaccharides and synthetic scaffolds) and Hydrogels have been reviewed trough literature and market search. The study focused on their respective properties and analyzed advantages and disadvantages of each of them.
Discussion: Clinical studies demonstrated improved cartilage regeneration thanks to the implantation of biomaterials after bone marrow stimulation. New cartilage can be engineered in vivo by transplanting chondrocytes seeded into a three-dimensional scaffold and this novel scaffold has mechanical properties that can be comparable to native cartilage and could be used to repair large osteochondral joints defects. Anyway, there is still space for improvement regarding clinical outcome and tissue quality
Defining indigenous plants: some problematic species from Norfolk Island
No full textDefining indigenous species may at first appear straight forward; most botanical texts provide similar definitions. The consistent requirement of such definitions is the lack of human intervention in the occurrence of the species within the area under consideration. Islands around the world have been invaded by plant species brought to their shores by humans. They are also places where self-introduced species can be continually arriving, as they have done for millennia. Scrutiny of the situation on Norfolk Island (1200 km east of Australia) finds that the distinction between indigenous and introduced taxa is sometimes unclear. There is also inconsistency regarding the acceptance of self-introduced species as indigenous. This paper explores these issues and notes that they are more important than idle botanical curiosity, because control of introduced (weed) species is a major area of activity in managing protected natural areas

Get PDFThe author analyzes the relationship between epistemology and ethics of the practice of anthropological research through the process of his professional institutionalization started recently in Italy, and in particular the elaboration of the Code of Conduct. The definition of the contents of anthropological expertise to legitimate its social recognition and authorize a specific professional ethics require to rethink the fieldwork relationships and their pertinence in the process of knowledge production. The author proposes to overcome the conception of the relationship as methodical instrument and the ethics of obligation strictly related to it, both external to the act of anthropological understanding and insufficient to distinguish its originality, with a more comprehensive understanding of the fieldwork relationship as emergent social bond throughout the anthropologist implication (her/his social construction). Drawing on his research experiences and on the notion of the practice’s internal good as suggested by the moral theory of Alasdair MacIntyre, finally, the author points out a way to recognize in the anthropological endeavor itself its original contribution to public knowledge as the very source of its professional ethics and its theoretical import to the public discussion about the common good in genera
