Management Uncertainty analysis of point by point sampling complex surfaces using touch probe CMMs

    No full text
The paper describes a study concerning point by point scanning of complex surfaces using tactile CMMs. A four factors-two level full factorial experiment was carried out, involving measurements on a complex surface configuration item comprising a sphere, a cylinder and a cone, combined in a single assembly. An investigation on the source and effects of different uncertainty contributors during this complex surface measurement was carried out. The factors involved are machine, probe, and operator, as well as procedure, dependant. The results obtained from the experiments were analysed in terms of deviations from CAD model, repeatability, and measuring uncertainty. Statistical analysis and uncertainty budget are presented

Multi-scale optical metrology for the quality control of polymer microfluidic systems

Micro injection moulding is a replication technology enabling large scale production of polymer-based micro products. To this respect, optical measuring technologies were selected to perform the quality control of a polymer micro-component: an optical coordinate measuring machine (CMM) and a white light interferometer (WLI) for dimensional and surface measurements respectively. Measuring results on polymer moulded parts produced under different process conditions were compared with dimensions and surface characteristics of the micro featured tool employed during experiments, in order to evaluate the replication accuracy of the moulding process. Comprehensive uncertainty budgets of both dimensional and topographical measurements were estimated, in order to ensure traceability of measurements

Characterization and analysis of micro channels and sub-micron surface roughness of injection moulded microfluidic systems using optical metrology

Precision injection moulding of miniaturized products with micro features such as channels for microfluidic applications poses the greatest challenges in terms of tooling technology and process optimization. The injection moulding process window of polypropylene was validated using a metrological approach for the production of a microfluidic substrate. Dimensional accuracy of micro channels 48 µm wide and 110 µm deep, as well as quality surface topography replication (surface roughness from 30 nm to 360 nm) were investigated using non-contact measuring instruments such as an optical coordinate measuring machine and a white light interferometer respectively. The effect of the dimensional scale range on the micro/nano features replication was evaluated and it was found to be the dominant parameter if compared with the effect of the other process-related parameters investigated (melt and mould temperature, injection speed)
