Ignorant Cognition. A Philosophical Investigation of the Cognitive Features of Not-Knowing

    No full text
This book offers a comprehensive philosophical investigation of ignorance. Using a set of cognitive tools and models, it discusses features that can describe a state of ignorance if linked to a particular type of cognition affecting the agent’s social behavior, belief system, and inferential capacity. The author defines ignorance as a cognitive condition that can be either passively (and unconsciously) borne by an agent or actively nurtured by him or her, and a condition that entails epistemic limitations (which can be any lack of knowledge, belief, information or data) that affect the agent’s behavior, belief system, and inferential capacity. The author subsequently describes the ephemeral nature of ignorance, its tenacity in the development of human inferential and cognitive performance, and the possibility of sharing ignorance among human agents within the social dimension. By combining previous frameworks such as the naturalization of logic, the eco-cognitive perspective in philosophy and concepts from Peircean epistemology, and adding original ideas derived from the author’s own research and reflections, the book develops a new cognitive framework to help understand the nature of ignorance and its influence on the human condition

Greek Goddness of the Moon in Light of the Orphic Hymn to Selene

    No full text
Hymn to Selene is one of 87 so-called Orphic hymns. Its addressee is goddess of the Moon, who is defined in the hymn both by the name Selene and Mene. Conducting the literary analysis of the above-mentioned hymn, we can notice that it consists of the invocation addressed to the goddess, many epithets revealing the greatness of the divinity and the prayer ending which in its contents resembles the invocation. It is worth mentioning that the basic part of the hymn includes some kind of litany catalogue of epithets by means of which the Hymn’s Author defines and describes the goddess Selene. The literary analysis of the respective epithets which are present in the Hymn to Selene, allows to state that the picture of the goddess of the Moon included in it possesses very classic, known to us from mythology, features and also clearly seen orphic features. Undoubtedly, dual sexuality that the goddess Selene was attributed with in verse 4 is such a feature. The phrase ϑῆλυς τε καὶ ἄρσην is to be found in this verse. In this context we have the direct reference to the primeval orphic godhead, Fanes, who was a two-gender god. Thus, Selene is perceived as one of hypostasis of one and the only one divine creature which can be defined as “One”. Basing on the results of the literary analysis, we can notice that the goddess Selene, who was not particularly popular with the ancient Greeks, was somehow re-discovered by Orphics, who saw her beauty through the person of the Hymn’s Author. Due to the fact that Selene was the goddess of the Moon by the light of which the orphic usually practiced their own rituals, certainly occupied much space in the orphic cult

‐diversity, of ants in intensively managed coffee plantations

    No full text
Abstract Local land‐use intensity and surrounding landscape complexity affect the diversity of local species. Ants are an important biocontrol agent of the coffee berry borer (CBB), the main coffee pest worldwide. Although intensification of coffee production and deforestation in the surrounding landscape may reduce ant diversity, α‐ and β‐diversity patterns of ants in coffee landscapes remain poorly understood. Ants foraging in coffee bushes were sampled, using tuna baits along an agricultural intensification gradient (forest, shaded coffee and sun coffee) in a Neotropical coffee landscape. We evaluated the differences in α and β components of ant richness, community differentiation and habitat specificity of ant communities, in response to land‐use type and the percentage of surrounding forest. We found that ant β‐diversity and community differentiation among plots were significantly reduced with coffee management intensity. The amount of forest border adjacent to coffee plantations did not affect α‐ or β‐diversity. Yet, ant habitat specificity in the forest increased with plots having greater amounts of forest border, although in sun coffee plantations, the opposite was found: plots with greater forest border decreased habitat specificity. We found that conserving forest at landscape scales enhanced β‐diversity, community differentiation and habitat specificity of ants in the forest. Loss of forest cover at landscape scales (i.e. predominance of sun coffee) may lead to biotic homogenisation of ant communities. In conclusion, landscape‐wide ant richness is important in terms of biological CBB control by conservation.Local and landscape management drives diversity of ants in coffee bushes, which are efficient biocontrol agents of the coffee berry borer. Sun coffee plantations might contribute to taxonomic homogenisation of ants all over the coffee landscape. Maintaining forest at landscape scales enhances β‐diversity of ants and is hence crucial for conservation and pest biocontrol. imageDepartamento Administrativo de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/100007637Universidad del Cauca http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100005682Universidad del Valle http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/50110000732

Diagnóstico operativo empresarial de la Compañía Minera Ares Unidad Operativa Selene

    No full text
It was done with the purpose of analyzing the current situation of the Operative Unit, applying the knowledge acquired in the Master of Operations Management, which has allowed identifying and proposing significant improvements to its current production processes or core business and also to its support processes, which will help increase the competitiveness, sustainability and profitability of the company. The Ares Mining Company, Selene Operative Unit is located to 22 kilometers from the Pallancata Mining Unit (mining site) at the department of Apurímac, in the south of Peru, at an altitude of 4,600 meters above sea level. The operation of mineral extraction is of the underground or underground type, from where the Silver and Gold are extracted and transported by dump trucks to the Selene Operating Unit, the analysis in this research work includes improvements in the design of the process using state-of-the-art technological applications such as particle analyzers in real time, reducing waiting times in the process, optimizing the allocation of limited resources to a series of needs, since in the commodity market, such as the mining case, it leaves little room for product development. The operational cost efficiency and operations optimization are the challenges to be overcome in a company that does not handle the sales price of its products, and that it must establish a strategy in cost leadership to be profitable and sustainable over time. The present study proposes with a projected investment of 1,251,529anestimatedsavingsof 1,251,529 an estimated savings of 2,285,706 in the first year and accumulated savings in the fifth year close to 5,109,703,inadditiontogeneratingaconstantincreaseofannualrevenuesoftheorderof 5,109,703, in addition to generating a constant increase of annual revenues of the order of 1,370,074Tesi

Il divino nel "Peri kosmou". Aristotele e aristotelismo tra fisica e filosofia

    No full text
The "Peri kosmou", included in the "Corpus aristotelicum", was subject of a more than thousand-year debate about its authenticity. Over the centuries the interpretations, even if addressed to the analysis of the philosophical contents, were mostly moved by the interest to assign a precise authorship or circumscribe the cultural and philosophical milieu from which the work may have drawn origin. This approach gave more importance to resolution of the question of authenticity. It follows minor attention to some philosophical aspects of the doctrines and of the identity of the author, to which it should pay attention. Starting from the consideration that the author addresses a primary attention to the subject of the divine, and that the scientific interest appears functional to show the philosophical role of theology in the "Peri kosmou", the detailed analysis of the nature of the god and of the relationship between god and cosmos, made in the light of comparison with similar doctrines, allows to better outline the philosophical features of the Aristotelianism of the "Peri kosmou" and to offer relevant elements also in relation to the question of authenticity
