    Bungo Range comprises of both primary forest in the upper highland and secondary forest in the lower part of the range. The primary forest has been gazetted as a national park on 26 February 2017, but there is very little information on the forest biodiversity on this range. The primary forest is divided into two types namely, kerangas forest (KF) and mixed dipterocarp forest (MDF). KF is also known as the tropical heath forest, which can be literally defined as the ‘land which cannot grow rice’ due to its highly acidic soil. The infertile soil has resulted in low yield of high-quality timber as compared to the MDF. The MDF, on the other hand, is mostly dominated by trees from the Dipterocarpaceae family. The Dipterocarpaceae trees yield high quality and expensive timber as compared to other timberproducing trees

    The river systems flow through the Bungo Range are classified between first to third orders (Figure 4.1). The streams are mostly high gradient, narrow (range: 4.0 – 19.3 m) and shallow with rocky substrates, cool (range: 24.3 – 24.9 oC) and fast flowing water (Figure 4.2A, B, D, G). The selected water parameters i.e., dissolved oxygen and pH recorded from four stations may indicate a good quality that suitable for various usages according to National Water Quality Standard for Malaysia (NWQS) (Tables 4.1, 4.2)

    Cetaceans in the nearshore waters of Sarawak have ecological functions and economic importance to the state. Being the keystone species of the ocean, they are valuable as indicators of the health of the environment as they sit on top of the ocean’s food chain. The presence of marine mammals in an area indicate that the fishing stock of the particular area is still present. In addition to that, the Irrawaddy dolphins also serve as important attraction for the eco-tourism industry within Kuching Bay. However, populations of the Irrawaddy dolphins throughout South East Asia are facing risk of local extinction due to anthropogenic factors such as bycatch in fisheries, habitat loss and degradations, decreased fitness from pollutions or contaminants

    A fresh look at shifting cultivation: Fallow length an uncertain indicator of productivity

    Shifting cultivation is practiced by millions of farmers in the tropics and has been accused of causing deforestation and keeping farmers in poverty. The assumed positive relationship between fallow length and crop yields has long shaped such negative opinions on the sustainability and environmental impact of the system, as population growth is believed inevitably to lead to its collapse. Empirical evidence for this assumption is scarce, however, and a better understanding of system dynamics is needed before discarding shifting cultivation as unsustainable. With cases from Malaysia and Indonesia, we show that fallow length is a weak predictor of crop yields, though interactions with fertilizer inputs may increase its importance. Other factors such as drought, flooding, and pests are more important determinants of yields. The implication is that when using natural fallow as the only means of nutrient supply, there is no need to cut old fallow vegetation. Moreover, there is no evidence of system collapse, even at short fallow periods. We conclude that shifting cultivation should be accepted as a rational land use system and that earlier calls for bringing a ‘‘Green Revolution’’ to shifting cultivators are still relevant to achieve intensive and sustainable production
