    Free Movement in the EU: Harmonisation of Mobile Citizens’ Social Rights

    The author focuses on the current stagnation in negotiating process on the further improvement of supranational regulation on coordination of social security systems in the European Union. The article examines the basic principles of the free movement of workers in the EU and notes that the 2004/2007 EU enlargement has had a significant impact on the scale and direction of labour mobility within the Community. The analysis of the main indicators and characteristics of workers' mobility reveals the existing disparities between the Member States. The author points out that the divergence of national social security regimes, as well as diverging interests of individual EU Member States, such as protecting the rights of their own mobile citizens, or combating “social dumping”, play a key role in hindering the harmonization of social security rules in the context of freedom of movement. The concept of “failing forward” used for the study allowed to comprehend how social integration can be promoted when challenged by contradictions. The need to comply with the rules of the common internal market, on the one hand, and the interests of individual EU member states and their citizens, on the other, in a situation where the current legislation does not meet the challenges of the time, and the development of new legislation is constantly blocked, leads the EU institutions to intensify intergovernmental cooperation and resort to complementary mechanisms. The author concludes that the use of nonbinding regulatory instruments such as electronic data exchange serves as an intermediate link in the process of deepening integration in the area and may become an impetus for restarting negotiations and help finalise the text of the new legislation

    Development of a bio-functional fermented soy beverage supplemented with microbial exopolysaccharides and its effect on the human gut microbiome in vitro

    The gut microbiome plays a key role in modulating human health and well-being. Exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are emerging as novel polymers that could exert a prebiotic effect via modification of this microbiome. Thus, incorporation of EPS to enhance food functionality is of interest. This study investigates the impact of a fermented soy beverage, supplemented with EPS produced by Leuconostoc mesenteroides DSA_O or DSA_F, on the faecal microbiota as assessed using an ex vivo model of the human distal colon. The soy beverage (SM) was prepared by fermentation with Lactiplantibacillus paraplantarum GB3 followed by supplementation with EPS_O (SMO) or EPS_F (SMF). Faecal samples from healthy donors were inoculated into a faecal fermentation medium with SM, SMO and SMF and incubated anaerobically at 37 °C for 24h. After incubation, samples were subjected to shotgun metagenomic and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) analysis. SMO and SMF were more effective than SM at enhancing the alpha diversity of the faecal microbiota after 24 h incubation. In addition, SMO promoted the growth of the health-associated species Bifidobacterium longum and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, the latter of which is considered a next-generation probiotic. Butyrate and propionate levels were higher in faecal samples fermented with SMO and SMF than in SM. Taken together, these preliminary results indicate a potential role of EPS produced by Leuc. mesenteroides to be used as a functional food ingredient, modulating the gut microbiome as well as increasing the levels of SCFAs

    Coordinating cell wall synthesis and cell division Most bacteria are protected by peptidoglycan cell walls, which must be remodeled to split the cell. Cell division requires the tubulin homolog FtsZ, a highly conserved cytoskeletal polymer that specifies the future site of division. Bisson-Filho et al. and Yang et al. found that the dynamic treadmilling of FtsZ filaments controls both the location and activity of the associated cell wall synthetic enzymes.
