This is the real story of Fabrizio Vienna and his hotel. Hotel Terme Antica Vienna is a family owned and managed hotel situated in Abano Terme, a famous spa location in the north-east of Italy. Fabrizio wants the family dynasty to continue within the business. To realize his wish, he has started to give some ownership stakes to his children but he feels he needs some help to realize his dream. He calls Paolo, a family business consultant. The case reports a rich set of materials: Paolo’s notes about the family and the business history, some transcriptions from the interviews Paolo did with the family managers and some drawings by the children. The main topics on which the case focuses are: decision-making, relationship conflicts and role conflict. The case provides potential discussion and review of factors impacting on succession, innovation, strategy, and human resources relating to small and medium enterprises

To investigate the complex dynamics when family members with differing perceptions and interpretations of reality jointly lead their family business, this research adopts an epistemic-operative interview technique using Morgan’s images of organization. We explore how family leaders’ root metaphors, which are symbolic frames that help understand individuals’ attitudes and behaviors, are linked to family businesses’ behavior and performance. Analyzing six Italian family hotels, we derive four structures of family symbolic meanings and explain how and why relationships and innovation are mechanisms through which firm performance is related and connected to the offshoots of the meanings of family leaders’ root metaphors

Research on organizational slack, which has focused mainly on its effect in large, publicly traded firms and on transitional economies, has found that slack functions as a buffer in periods of crisis. However, little work has been done on the value of slack resources for smaller firms in mature industries. This study contributes to the resource-based literature with a quantitative analysis of a broad sample of Italian SMEs that operate in the traditional ‘Made in Italy’ industries. The purpose of the paper is to use longitudinal data from before and after the 2008 world financial crisis to determine whether slack resources drive growth and profitability in organizations with limited resources that operate in mature industries in periods of recession. The results of two-stage least squares regression indicate that, similar to their larger counterparts, small firms must secure high levels of profitability in order to achieve sound growth during recessions. Potential financial slack is equally important in driving profitability in these periods, although it is not related to higher growth. Investing in R&D does not affect small firms’ ability to be profitable and grow during recessions
