Are the Moons of Jupiter Unique?: Thermochemical Disk Modeling of Moon Formation

    No full text
The practice of astronomy is in many ways an intrinsically introspective endeavour. A significant fraction of astronomical motivation is derived from the desire to understand whether a habitable planet such as the Earth is a unique object, and, by extension, whether the inhabitants of the Earth themselves collectively represent a unique phenomenon. By definition, a world is considered potentially habitable if it is theoretically capable of supporting liquid water at its surface. But by focusing solely on strictly Earth-like planets, we risk overlooking other potentially habitable options. In fact, the majority of the worlds known to host liquid water oceans in the solar system are not Earth-like at all. These other worlds do however share a singular defining characteristic: they are the icy moons that orbit the gas giant planets. Their oceans are concealed below kilometers of frozen crust. In the solar system at least three moons are known to host an ocean with a high degree of confidence (Europa, Enceladus, and Titan), and another four are suspected (Ganymede, Callisto, Mimas, and Dione). Hence, any hope of answering the question as to how unique the phenomena of life on Earth really is may hinge predominantly on answering a seemingly unrelated question: how unique are the icy moons? The formation of gas giants appears to be accompanied by the formation of moons, as, at least in the solar system, the two appear inseparable. The gaseous planets Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus, are each attended by a retinue of moons both regular and irregular. The regular satellites tend to orbit in a single plane, in the same direction, and on nearly circular paths. These peculiar properties are also exhibited by the planets, and hence it is considered likely that some similar process has been at play to form them both. That process is the formation within a swirling disk of gas and dust. Planets form within disks that surrounded a star (a circumstellar disk) while the moons would have formed within a disk surrounding their planet (a circumplanetary disk, or CPD). The last decade of strides made in the observation of circumstellar disks has revolutionized our understanding of the planet formation process. To what extent might the moon and planet formation process be similar? To what extent might we be able to extrapolate our understanding of circumstellar disks down to the scales characteristic of circumplanetary disks? Is there a smooth continuum in physical processes, connecting the formation of large moons, with the formation of the smallest planets? In this work we have extended the theoretical tools used to explore planet formation down into this new regime. On the observational side, as the scale of the astrophysical object shrinks, the capabilities of the instrument must rise commensurately to observe it. We are now at the earliest possible stage of directly observing CPDs to gain insights beyond the theoretical into how giant planet moon formation actually proceeds…<br/

Abstract: Students in Kisumu East Sub-county, Kisumu County have been posting low KCSE mean scores over the last several years albeit having the least number of schools and fewest number of candidates among the sub-counties of Kisumu County. The purpose of the study was to investigate if a relationship exists between academic self-concept and academic achievement among learners in Kisumu East Sub-County. The study used McClelland’s Achievement Theory of Motivation. The study employed the correlational survey design. The study targeted all 1224 form there students in Kisumu East sub-County and stratified random sampling was used to obtain 302 respondents. Data was collected using questionnaire adopted from the Academic Self-Concept Scale. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze data that is; means and frequency distribution tables, and inferential statistics such as correlation coefficient, r. Academic achievement was measured using standardized internal exams. The results showed that a positive and significant correlation between academic self-concept of students and their academic achievement, r (289) = .54, p < .05. The study recommends that teachers and student counsellors should come up with programs that focus on building academic self-concept amongst students. Keywords: Academic self-concept, academic achievement, secondary school students. Purpose : assess the significance of the individual components subject training gymnasts according to the survey of coaches with different skills. Material : two groups of coaches with different qualifications (n = 40). The first group of coaches -, experience from 1 to 10 years (n = 20); the second group - work experience from 11 to 25 years (n = 20). Gymnasts preliminary stage of basic training. Coaches are asked to answer 15 questions. Results : the content of questioning coaches gymnastics shows the relevance of the basic problems of technical training of young gymnasts (throwing and catching objects). The most difficult exercises in the training and improvement are throws and catches the ball (coefficient of concordance W = 0,814). The necessity of the development and use of new techniques for analyzing sports equipment exercises with the ball, learning and improving them. Conclusions : basic technical training and preparedness of gymnasts to perform exercises with objects represent a problem that is solved enough in theory and practice gymnastics

Exploring Reciprocal Relationships of Land-Uses in a Historical Mixed-Use Quarter of Istanbul: Measuring mixed-use patterns of Cihangir

In this paper we explore the land-use patterns of a historical mixed-use quarter of Istanbul by focusing on the reciprocal relationships of housing and commercial uses. We are concerned with the distribution of land-use patterns based on spatial adjacency and land-use patterns within the buildings. We measure reciprocal relationships of housing and commercial uses by using GIS and Data Mining in a complementary way and we test if we can re-generate these relationships by evolutionary computation to further support land-use allocation in inner city regenerations or new urban developments.Architectural Engineering +TechnologyArchitecture and The Built Environmen

Pathomorphological and gender-age aspects of echinococosis of the liver

Background. Echinococcosis is a chronic parasitic disease that belongs to zooanthropohelminthosis and is characterized by the development of solitary or multiple cystic formations in the liver, lungs, brain and other organs. Today, the incidence is increasing dramatically in non-endemic countries, and the spread of the disease is largely linked to global population migration. Purpose – To analyze the pathomorphological and sex-age characteristics of operated patients with echinococcosis of the liver for the period 2011–2021. Materials and Methods. Medical documentation and autopsy material of all cases of surgical intervention in patients with liver echinococcosis at the pathology department of the State Institution «Zaycev V.T. Institute of general and urgent surgery of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine» for the period 2011–2021. Sex-age characteristics of patients with echinococcosis were studied. A pathomorphological study of the postoperative material was carried out, taking into account the size and type of cysts, and the location of their formation. The preparations were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and by the Van Gieson method. Results. During the period 2011–2021, 36 operated patients with echinococcosis were recorded. Liver echinococcosis was mostly detected in men – 52.8% (р ≤ 0.05), the average age of patients was 46.9 ± 3.1 years. Among the operated, the percentage of people under 50 was 69.4%, with a predominance of men (52%). In the case of primary and recurrent echinococcosis of the liver, single cysts were found in most patients, namely in 26 (72.2%) with predominant localization in the right lobe (88.5%). Multiple cysts were found in 10 patients (27.8%); lesions of the right lobe of the liver – 70.0%, left – 10.0%, both lobes – 20.0%. It was established that the average diameter of echinococcal cysts was 13.8 ± 2.5 cm, individual cysts reached 17 cm. The thickness of all layers of the cyst wall was 1.3 ± 0.3 cm. The outer acellular layer of the cyst wall was 0.8 ± 0.1 cm. In most cases (61.1%, p ≤ 0.05), the parasite was alive, as evidenced by the clear, colorless cyst fluid with the presence of single daughter cysts with a diameter of 0.1 to 2 cm, which had the same macro- and microscopic characteristics as the mother cyst structure The color of the entire membrane of the parasite was white-pink. Conclusions. Over a 10-year period, 36 patients operated on for echinococcosis of the liver were recorded, the majority of cases were men (52.8%, p ≤ 0.05). The average age of the patients was 46.9 ± 3.1 years and ranged from 26 to 69 years. Among those operated on, the percentage of people under 50 was 69.4%, with a predominance of males in the gender structure. The average diameter of echinococcal cysts was 13.8 ± 2.5 cm, individual cysts reached 17 cm. The thickness of all layers of the cyst wall was 1.3 ± 0.3 cm. The outer acellular layer of the cyst wall was 0.8 ± 0.1 cm In most cases, the parasite was alive (61.1%, p ≤ 0.05)
