Shallow-water methane-seep faunas in the Cenomanian Western Interior Seaway: No evidence for onshore-offshore adaptations to deep-sea vents
Sulfide-rich environments in shallow water were considered as sites where animals acquired preadaptations enabling them to colonize deep-sea hydrothermal vents and seeps or where they survived extinction events in their deep-sea habitats. Here we document late Cenomanian shallow-water seep communities from the Tropic Shale in the Western Interior Seaway, United States, as a possible refutation of these hypotheses. The late Cenomanian was a time of extremely warm deep-water temperatures, which supposedly facilitated adaptations to the deep sea, and of widespread oceanic anoxia (oceanic anoxic event 2) that supposedly extinguished deep-water vent and seep faunas. Contrary to the expectations, the taxa of the Tropic Shale seeps were not found at coeval or younger deep-water seep or vent deposits. Furthermore, a cluster analysis of faunal similarity among Cretaceous vent and seep faunas revealed no distinction between pre- and post-Cenomanian seep faunas, but instead strong similarities among Aptian to Late Cretaceous seep faunas. This suggests that a low temperature gradient from shallow to deep water did not facilitate invasions of deep-sea vents and seeps from shallow water and that preadaptation for living at deep-sea vents and seeps did not evolve at shallow-water methane seeps. The vast majority of adaptations to successfully colonize deep-sea vents and seeps were most likely acquired below the photic zone
Geologic overview
[Extract] Cretaceous strata in Southern Utah were deposited in the proximal portion of the Sevier Foreland Basin. Total thickness of Cretaceous sediments probably exceeded 3000 m in the region before mid-Laramide uplift and erosion.
Exposures are primarily found at the Kaiparowits Plateau and around the margins of the Markagunt and Paunsaugunt plateaus and the Pine Valley Mountain region. The
Cretaceous section is divided up into the Cedar Mountain, Dakota, Tropic, Straight Cliffs, Wahweap, and Kaiparowits formations east of Parowan Canyon and is contained almost entirely within the Iron Springs Formation west. The sections are highly fossiliferous and yield one of the best records of Late Cretaceous terrestrial ecosystem evolution known in North America

Eclectic British author Alan Moore (b. 1953) is one of the most acclaimed and controversial comics writers to emerge since the late 1970s. He has produced a large number of well-regarded comic books and graphic novels while also making occasional forays into music, poetry, performance, and prose. In Alan Moore: Comics as Performance, Fiction as Scalpel , Annalisa Di Liddo argues that Moore employs the comics form to dissect the literary canon, the tradition of comics, contemporary society, and our understanding of history. The Kaiparowits Formation: a remarkable record of late Cretaceous terrestrial environments, ecosystems, and evolution in western North America
[Extract] Updated Sedimentological and paleontological data support earlier assertions that the Kaiparowits Formation was deposited in a wet alluvial to coastal plain setting with an abundance of large river channels and perennial ponds, lakes, and wetlands. A synthesis of available geochronological data from contemporaneous Upper Cretaceous continental sedimentary units was compiled, and many ages were recalibrated on the basis of new standards to provide
the most up-to-date correlations of coeval strata and associated faunas across the Western Interior Basin. Recalibration of Kaiparowits Formation ash beds demonstrates that the
formation is approximately half a million years older than previously suggested, deposited ~76.6-74.5 Ma. In addition, a new ash bed (bentonite) from the Horse Mountain area, collected in the lower portion of the middle unit of the Kaiparowits Formation (~19o-m level), was radiometrically dated by both 40Ar/39Ar and U-Pb techniques, resulting in similar ages of 75.97 ± 0.18 Ma and 76.26 ± 0.05 Ma. Importantly, both ages are consistent with dated ash beds sitting above and below this level. Measured sections from throughout the outcrop expanse of the Kaiparowits Formation are correlated by an updated tephrostratigraphy, and key vertebrate
fossil sites from throughout the formation are precisely tied into this stratigraphy. Updated geochronology and stratigraphy reveals that many of the most richly fossiliferous intervals
across the Western Interior Basin are constrained to extremely narrow temporal intervals. The term taphozone was coined to describe broad geographic zones of exceptional and elevated continental fossil preservation within narrow temporal windows. Taphozones imply the existence
of regional or basin-scale controls on fossil preservation. The Kaiparowits-Dinosaur Park-upper Two Medicine taphozone is assigned to the widespread interval of middle to late Campanian strata in the Western Interior Basin defined by the Kaiparowits, Dinosaur Park, and upper Two Medicine formations. Preliminary analysis of this phenomenon suggests that synchronous deposition of large volumes of volcanic ash across the basin during this time may be the primary driver of elevated fossil preservation in the Kaiparowits-Dinosaur Park-upper Two Medicine taphozone
Cytosolic Accumulation of L-Proline Disrupts GABA-Ergic Transmission through GAD Blockade
SummaryProline dehydrogenase (PRODH), which degrades L-proline, resides within the schizophrenia-linked 22q11.2 deletion suggesting a role in disease. Supporting this, elevated L-proline levels have been shown to increase risk for psychotic disorders. Despite the strength of data linking PRODH and L-proline to neuropsychiatric diseases, targets of disease-relevant concentrations of L-proline have not been convincingly described. Here, we show that Prodh-deficient mice with elevated CNS L-proline display specific deficits in high-frequency GABA-ergic transmission and gamma-band oscillations. We find that L-proline is a GABA-mimetic and can act at multiple GABA-ergic targets. However, at disease-relevant concentrations, GABA-mimesis is limited to competitive blockade of glutamate decarboxylase leading to reduced GABA production. Significantly, deficits in GABA-ergic transmission are reversed by enhancing net GABA production with the clinically relevant compound vigabatrin. These findings indicate that accumulation of a neuroactive metabolite can lead to molecular and synaptic dysfunction and help to understand mechanisms underlying neuropsychiatric disease

A bilingual collection of Italian translated poems on Armenian-themed topics penned by Armenian-Canadian Diaspora author and emeritus professor Alan Whitehorn. The poems deal with the 1915 Armenian Genocide, travels though Armenia, Armenian soci- ety and politics, the Nagorno Karabakh wars of the 1990s and 2020s, Diaspora identity issues, the continued vexing problem of genocide along with its denial, and the ongo- ing existential challenges facing Armenians, both in Armenia itself and in the Diaspora. Poems selected for the Italian volume are primarily drawn from Whitehorn’s previously published books: Ancestral Voices, Just Poems, Return to Armenia and Karabakh Diary. The poetry translations were led by Sona Haroutyunian, associate professor of Armenian and Translation Studies at Ca’ Foscari University Venice
Implications of the internal plumbing of a Late Cretaceous sand volcano: Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Utah
[Extract] A vertical, cross-sectional exposure through a well-preserved sand blow and the associated volcano was discovered 1.8 m above the base of the Upper Cretaceous upper member of the Wahweap Formation. Preserved features within the feeder conduit (pipe) of the sand vo1cano facilitate reconstruction of the vertical fluid flow and interpretation of liquefied sand flow generated by local seismogenic faulting. In the lower reaches of the conduit, a dilation fracture crosscuts a low-permeability, fine-grained sandstone seal. Above this, the conduit widens and the edges become more diffuse in the overlying higher-permeability sandstone, and conversely, the pipe contracts in diameter as it passes through lower-permeability sandstones. This change in character of the pipe, in addition to the structureless sandstone adjacent to the pipe, indicates that lateral flow to the conduit was greater in the high-permeability zones. Within the pipe, subvertical stringers of granules 30 cm below the vent indicate that fluid row of the liquefied sediment was of sufficient velocity to move granules. Medium to fine sand, elutriated from the sediment in the conduit, forms the subarial sand volcano cone. The internally massive surface volcano is slightly asymmetrical, measuring ~120 cm in apparent diameter and ~20 cm in height and is onlapped by the lee face of a fluvial dune. Modern sand volcanoes often develop proximal to faults as a result of high-magnitude seismic events. This ancient sand volcano is located in close proximity to a series of normal faults and, along with other preserved syntectonic deposits in the Wahweap Formation, indicates that the fault slip history includes intense, high-magnitude seismic activity
The construction of Karen Karnak: The multi-author-function
This thesis is situated within the comparatively recent developments of Web 2.0 and the emergence of interactive WikiMedia, and explores the mode of authorship within a Read/Write culture compared to that of a Read/Only tradition. The hypothesis of this study is that the role of the audience has become merged with the author, and as such, represents new functions and attributes, distinct from a more conventional concept of authorship, in which the roles of audience and author are more separate. Read/Write and participatory culture, as defined by this study, is focused on collaboration, and includes the influences of D.I.Y. culture, Open-Source practices and the production of text by multiple authors. Multi-authorship presents a re-thinking of several concepts which support the notion of the individual author, since the focus of multi-authorship is not on attribution and ownership of a finished text, but on the continued malleability of a text. Modes of multi-authorship, demonstrated in the use of the pseudonyms Alan Smithee and Karen Eliot, represent declarative authors whose names signify multiple origins, whilst concurrently indicating a distinct body of work. The function of these names form an important context to this study, since primary research involves the construction of an experimental mode of multi-authorship utilising WikiMedia technology and the interaction of thirty nine participants, who are invited to create a body of work under the collective pseudonym Karen Karnak. The data generated by this experiment is analysed using aspects of Michel Foucault's author-function to identify and determine power structures inherent in the WikiMedia context. The interplay of power structures, including concepts such as identity, ownership and the body of work, affect the resulting mode of authorship and contribute to the construction of Karen Karnak, suggesting further areas of research into the emerging multi-author

Faithfulness and Reduplicative Identity
This paper proposes a revised view of faithfulness in Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky 1993), relating it to reduplicative identity (McCarthy & Prince 1993). Faithfulness and identity are unified in a theory of Correspondence relations between structures.
