DNA barcoding publications
I searched the Scopus database for peer-reviewed literature that referenced any of four seminal barcode papers (Hebert et al. 2003; Hollingsworth et al. 2009; Schoch et al. 2012; Stoeckle and Hebert 2008). The search, conducted in January 2015, yielded 3557 scientific journal publications from 2003-2014. I, and a research assistant, extracted variables for each article including: publication source; publication year; number of citations; and author names and institutional affiliations. A research assistant trained in programming used a customized computer program to combine synonymous names of single individuals and separate identical names of different individuals.
From this database I generated variables for presence of authors with institutional affiliations in high, middle, or low income countries (World Bank 2016); presence of authors from mega-biodiverse countries (Mittermeier 1997); and whether or not the paper was published in a highly ranked journal. I assigned an income variable using four-categories of Gross National Income (GNI) per capita levels from the World Bank (upper income, >=4,036 to 1,026 to 1,025). I used InCites Journal Citation Reports (Thomson Reuters 2016) to identify the top 10 ranking journals in each field category relevant to DNA barcoding
The politics of fiscal effort in Spain and Ireland : Market credibility versus political legitimacy
Austerity measures in response to Eurozone crisis have tended to be conceived,
debated, and implemented as if only the technical parameters of budget
management mattered. But policies that impose budgetary hardships on citizens,
whether in the form of increased taxes or cuts to public spending go right to the
heart of voter expectations about what it is both appropriate and acceptable for
governments to do. Pro-cyclical measures that worsen an already difficult
situation in a recession run counter to deep-seated norms and expectations in
European countries, built up over decades of democratic governance, whereby
governments are expected to provide offsetting protection for their citizens
against the vicissitudes of the market. If austerity measures are held to be
unavoidable in response to market turbulence, and especially if this view is
underwritten by international authorities, new challenges of political
legitimation are likely to arise. These issues are explored through the
experiences of Spain and Ireland.A version of this paper will be published in

The Challenge of Tax Reform and Expanding the Tax Base
This is the text of the 2009 Geary Lecture, delivered at the Economic and Social Research Institute in honour of Roy Geary.
OFFICIAL STATISTICS: ABOVE AND BELOW THE PUBLIC DEBATE. THIRTIETH GEARY LECTURE, 1999
Roy Geary was a person of great distinction, recognised for a wide range of achievements. He was a first class mathematician who made significant contributions to statistical theory. He was an Official Statistician of distinction and he made great contributions to the development of economic statistics and to the use of statistics for policy purposes in fields as diverse as demography and economic statistics. He was the first Director of the Central Statistics Office when it was created in 1949 and I am delighted to be asked to present this lecture in the CSO’s 50th birthday year
Season 3 Episode 2: The Neighborhood Church
What do you know about the church closest to your house? Chances are, not much. Today most churches have forgotten the art of connecting with their neighborhoods. They are quick to leave city neighborhoods for bigger, better buildings in the suburbs. Eric Jacobsen, author of Sidewalks in the Kingdom: New Urbanism and the Christian Faith, and Sister Maureen Geary of the Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids offer their ideas on why. Shirley Hoogstra hosts. Episode #302
Vivre en conflit dans une France sans État : typologie des mécanismes de règlement des conflits (1050-1200)
Living with Conflict in Stateless France: A Typology of Conflict Regulation Mechanisms from 1050 to 1200. P. J. Geary.
The author argues that conflicts in feudal society should be understood as integral and positive social structures rather than as events, and that specific outbursts should be seen as social dramas in which these structures broke down, were used for certain social purposes, and then seemed to disappear, only to reemerge later. Lacking an authoritative jurisprudential system, medieval conflict handling was quite similar to that seen in traditional acephalous societies today, and involved certain ritualized forms of violence and certain "violent" rituals through which opponents negotiated a settlement. The author suggests a typology of such mechanisms, and suggests that a negotiated settlement aimed more at restructuring the relationship between the parties to the altercation than at resolving any particular point of contention. Involving the community at large, it usually failed to put an end to the conflict, simply returning it to its dormant state.Geary Patrick J. Social capital and self-rated health in the Republic of Ireland: evidence from the European Social survey
This paper analyses the determinants of self-reported health in Ireland, conditioning self-reported health on a set of socio-economic, labour market and social capital variables. Ireland has the highest self-reported health rate in Europe, a finding backed-up by other studies. Data were derived from the 2002 and 2005 European Social survey. The full 87,915 observations from both rounds were pooled and used to estimate mean self-rated health across Europe. The Irish data were isolated, totalling 2,049 individuals for 2002 and 2,286 individuals for 2005. The 2002 data were used to analyse the determinants of subjective health state, as it had a richer array of social capital variables. The results demonstrate statistically significant effects of income on self-reported health that are robust to different statistical specifications and statistically significant though modest effects of social capital variables such as associational membership and frequency of social meeting and labour market variables such as being on a limited as opposed to permanent contract
