    An assessment of the impact of possible CAP reform scenarios on Romanian agriculture

    Using a simplified model, with key-variable the prices of two different possible scenarios of CAP reform after 2013 (moderate and radical), this paper present a comparison between the price effects of implementation of each reform scenario at 2015 horizon on Romanian agriculture. This short analysis shows that, under the presented hypotheses, the net welfare effect, due to the price changes, for the selected products, is positive in both reform scenarios, yet greater in the case of the radical reform. Integrated in the large context of Romanian development, it seems that the influence of CAP reform upon agriculture and rural areas will be most likely a gradual one: an interpenetration between the two scenarios is foreseeable, starting with the moderate reform that will dominate the period around 2013, the reform measures acquiring a more radical character afterwards.CAP reform, Romania, welfare effects, Agricultural and Food Policy,

    Rich, Sturmian, and trapezoidal words

    In this paper we explore various interconnections between rich words, Sturmian words, and trapezoidal words. Rich words, first introduced by the second and third authors together with J. Justin and S. Widmer, constitute a new class of finite and infinite words characterized by having the maximal number of palindromic factors. Every finite Sturmian word is rich, but not conversely. Trapezoidal words were first introduced by the first author in studying the behavior of the subword complexity of finite Sturmian words. Unfortunately this property does not characterize finite Sturmian words. In this note we show that the only trapezoidal palindromes are Sturmian. More generally we show that Sturmian palindromes can be characterized either in terms of their subword complexity (the trapezoidal property) or in terms of their palindromic complexity. We also obtain a similar characterization of rich palindromes in terms of a relation between palindromic complexity and subword complexity

    Design of Interference-Resilient Medium Access for High Throughput WLANs

    The proliferation of wireless communications systems poses new challenges in terms of coexistence between heterogeneous devices operating within the same frequency bands. In fact, in case of high-density concentration of wireless devices, like indoor environments, the network performance is typically limited by the mutual interference among the devices themselves, such as for wireless local area networks (WLANs). In this paper, we analyze a protocol strategy for managing multiple access in wireless networks. A network of sensors colocated with the WLAN terminals forms a control layer for managing the medium access and scheduling resources in order to limit collisions and optimize the WLAN data traffic; this control layer is based on a low power wideband technology characterized by interference robustness, like CDMA (code division multiple access) or UWB (ultrawideband) for sensors. In this work, we perform an analytical and simulative performance study of the saturated throughput, showing numerical results for the UWB-IR (Impulse Radio) sensors case and highlighting the advantage that can be provided particularly in very high capacity systems, which constitute the necessary evolution of current WLAN versions

    Safety Assessment of Microwave Breast Imaging: Heating Analysis on Digital Breast Phantoms

    Featured Application: Devices for microwave mammography could soon appear in clinical practice. The significant result of this study is the demonstration of the high safety of a microwave imaging system in terms of heating induced in biological tissues. The impact of breast cancer on public health is serious, and due to risk/benefit assessment, screening programs are usually restricted to women older than 49 years. Microwave imaging devices offer advantages such as non-ionizing radiation, low cost, and the ability to distinguish between cancerous and healthy tissues due to their electrical properties. Ensuring the safety of this technology is vital for its potential clinical application. To estimate the temperature increase in breast tissues from a microwave imaging scanner, cases of healthy, benign, and malignant breast tissues were analyzed using three digital models and adding two healthy breast models with varying densities. Virtual experiments were conducted using the Sim4Life software (version 7.2) with a system consisting of a horn antenna in transmission and a Vivaldi antenna in reception. Temperature increases were estimated based on the Specific Absorption Rate distributions computed for different configurations and frequencies. The highest temperature increase obtained in this analysis is lower than 60 μK in fibroglandular tissue or skin, depending on the frequency and breast density. The presence of a receiving antenna acting as a scatterer modifies the temperature increase, which is almost negligible. Microwave examination can be performed without harmful thermal effects due to electromagnetic field exposure

    Les comportements prosociaux reposent sur une reconnaissance adéquate des émotions (Marshall et al., 1995; van Langen et al., 2014). Les auteurs d'infraction à caractère sexuel (AICS) tendent à présenter des déficits aussi bien dans la réalisation de comportements prosociaux que dans la reconnaissance des émotions (Cigna et al., 2015; Tiberi et al., 2018). En conséquence, les objectifs de cette thèse sont d'approfondir l'étude de la reconnaissance des émotions dans cette population; explorer leur comportement oculaire durant ces tâches (eye-tracking); et, finalement, de mettre en perspective leurs profils diagnostiques et leurs taux de risque de récidive avec cette capacité de reconnaissance

    Design and assessment of an innovative thawing equipment for the professional food service

    The need for faster, safer and environmentally compatible thawing methods is perceived in different branches of food industry, as e.g. in the fast food sector. We investigate a prototype of jet-impingement, batch-process thawing machine, exploiting high-speed impact of heated atmospheric air onto food items. The results of combined experimental and numerical study show the promising potential of this technology beyond the expected increased thawing rate, especially when the proposed two-side arrangement of the jets is adopted. A series of thawing indicators are calculated and used to account for the thawing uniformity and for the risk of bacterial proliferation. A computationally-efficient two-stage model of the considered thawing process is conceived, which can be used for design and optimization
