An Alice Puzzle
I have been sitting in on an honor\u27s class about Lewis Carroll being taught this spring semester at my old college haunt Butler University in Indianapolis. Among the many new puzzles and games being introduced in the class I offer the following based on the ten different letters in Alice in Wonderland . These ten are ALICE and DROWN, perhaps referring the the 2nd Wonderland chapter A Pool of Tears where Alice thought she might drown in her own tears

The pale beige mineral-gem Tourmaline happens to be my birthstone and possesses unexpected magical properties as we will soon see. It is also of great interest logologically since as an isogram it splits nicely into five two-letter words TO-UR-MA-LI-NE all of which may be found in standard dictionaries. Other splits are possible, making this gem very special

Here is a rather hard puzzle. Assign the sixteen numbers 1 through 15 to the letters of OSCAR THUMPBINDLE so that the eight words BASH, BUMP, CLAD, CURE, HORN, MIND, PLOT, and SITE each sume to 30. There are 86 ways four of the sixteen numbers can sum to 30 and therein lies the puzzle\u27s difficulty
New Word Recreations
In the November issue, Jim Puder nicely extended Harold Jacob\u27s Three Jog Knight (WW Aug 2008) to a Five-Jog Knight puzzle. Puder and the editor solved the problem and its solution appears in this issue. I wish to extend their results and point out some new puzzles and games that can be performed with their words
