Literacy through Composition Techniques in the Chinese Yan Huang Style of Composer Bao Yuankai
Music composition, particularly within the Chinese Yan Huang style, holds significance for its artistic merit and potential to enhance literacy development and foster cultural appreciation. This study delves into the literacy composition techniques employed by composer Bao Yuankai within the Chinese Yan Huang style, focusing on the piece “Going to Jiangzhou.” The primary objective is to analyze the literacy composition techniques in the Chinese Yan Huang style of composer Bao Yuankai. Through a multidimensional approach integrating insights from music education, cultural studies, and literacy development, the study examines instrumentation, melody, harmony, and cultural symbolism in Yuankai’s compositions. Three key informants, including music scholars, professional musicians, and music educators, provide diverse perspectives on Yuankai’s works. Qualitative data analysis methods are employed to analyze insights gathered from interviews and observations. Findings reveal Yuankai’s adept use of traditional Chinese elements alongside modern composition techniques, resulting in compositions that resonate with audiences worldwide. Suggestions include incorporating culturally relevant content into music education curricula to enhance student’s literacy skills and cultural awareness
Strategies for Education and Literacy in the Preservation and Transmission of Jiujiang Folk Songs in Jiangxi Province
Jiujiang Folk Songs, from Jiujiang County in Jiangxi Province, is a traditional Chinese folk genre with unique musical styles and themes focusing on daily life, labor, love, and historical narratives. Beginning with an introduction that highlights the cultural significance of these songs, the study’s objective is to propose strategies for education and literacy in the preservation and transmission of Jiujiang folk songs in Jiangxi Province. Focusing on Jiujiang County, known for its rich cultural heritage, the research involves key informants with deep roots in the region and extensive experience in performing and teaching Jiujiang folk songs. Through qualitative data analysis, including live performance observations and structured interviews, the study identifies key challenges such as an aging population of practitioners, language barriers, and a lack of modern promotion. Drawing from these findings, the research suggests strategies at multiple levels, including legislative protection, cultural promotion, and school involvement, to bridge these gaps and ensure the continued preservation and transmission of Jiujiang folk songs. This study contributes to the broader discourse on the preservation of traditional cultural heritage in the face of modernization and serves as a model for safeguarding similar treasures worldwide
A CURRICULUM STUDY: HUKOU QINGYANG OPERA KNOWLEDGE TRANSMISSION IN JIANGXI PROVINCE, CHINA
Qingyang opera is a cultural feature of Hukou, with the "Xiulan Ban" singing on the banks of Poyang Lake and the Yangtze River. The objective was to study the transmission process of Hukou Qinyang Opera knowledge in Jiangxi Province, China. The research tools include interviews and observation to obtain research data. Qualitative research uses observation, experimentation, and analysis to determine the essential characteristics of things. The informants are classified into three groups: key, Qingyang opera performers, and general. The results showed that the transmission of Qinyang Opera has two systems: one is the informal transmission, with local artists as the main transmission, and the second is the formal transmission, with university and academic institution participants as the main participants in the transmission.
 
Literacy Transmission of Chinese Folk Songs in Southern Shaanxi
Southern Shaanxi, rich in folk song culture, faces significant challenges in preserving its musical heritage due to rapid modernization, technological advancements, and social changes. The primary objective is to investigate the educational literacy development and transmission processes of Chinese folk songs in Southern Shaanxi under contemporary status. The research site encompasses cities like Hanzhong and Ankang, with seven key informants, including folk song practitioners, educators, cultural experts, students, and community members, provided insights through interviews, observations, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was employed to identify patterns and themes related to educational literacy development, transmission processes, and cultural influences. The results indicate that integrating folk songs into educational curricula enhances language acquisition, critical thinking, emotional expression, and cognitive skills while revealing challenges such as the loss of traditional environments, the complexity of singing techniques, and economic constraints. The study suggests embracing technological innovations, fostering community involvement, and implementing supportive policies to sustain the transmission of Chinese folk songs and promote cultural literacy among younger generations
Musical Literacy Development: The Case of Qin Zheng Playing Techniques of Zhou Wang
The Qin Zheng, an ancient Chinese musical instrument, embodies centuries of cultural heritage and artistic expression. Amidst its strings, melodies resonate with stories of ancient China, reflecting the country’s rich history and cultural identity. The objective of this study is to analyze the Qin Zheng playing techniques of Zhou Wang in musical literacy development. The research investigates Zhou Wang’s historical development, pedagogical approach, and playing techniques through a qualitative analysis. The study focuses on the Xi’an Conservatory of Music as the primary research site, where Zhou Wang has taught and mentored students for over three decades. Key informants include Zhou Wang herself, her students, and colleagues in the field of Chinese musical education. Data analysis involves structured interviews, observations of performances and teaching sessions, and transcription of musical examples. The findings reveal Zhou Wang’s mastery of Qin Zheng techniques, including intricate right-hand and left-hand skills, and their significance in fostering musical literacy development. The study highlights the potential benefits of integrating music education, particularly traditional Chinese music like Qin Zheng, into curricula as a means to enrich students’ language skills, cognitive abilities, and emotional intelligence

The Chinese Luoyang Quju Opera holds significant cultural importance in Henan Province. Despite its historical richness, this art form confronts challenges amidst modernization and evolving entertainment preferences. This study investigates literacy strategies for preserving and contemporaneously developing the Chinese Luoyang Quju Opera. The research in Luoyang engages performers, educators, and scholars through qualitative methods, such as interviews, field observations, and archival research. The findings underscore the necessity for systematic documentation, scientific preservation techniques, educational integration, governmental backing, and digital platform utilization to sustain this opera. Emphasizing a comprehensive approach to cultural conservation, blending traditional and contemporary methodologies to captivate new generations, the study recommends digital experience centers, social media outreach, curriculum inclusion, community initiatives, and cultural tourism programs. These strategies aim to uphold the enduring legacy of Luoyang Quju Opera in contemporary society

This study focuses on the preservation and transmission of ethnic minority musical instruments in northwest Guangxi. The study employed a qualitative research methodology that focused on how these instruments’ performance contexts and functions have evolved in response to modern influences. Drawing on ethnomusicology research theory, fieldwork, and interviews, the study investigates the roles of government promotion, tourism development, and modern technology in shaping the contemporary usage of instruments such as the Biandan, Tonggu, and Sixianhu. The research highlights the balance between preserving traditional cultural roles and adapting to new functions, particularly as tourism and entertainment become central to economic development in the region. Additionally, it examines how modern technology, through platforms like Douyin, facilitates the transmission of musical traditions to broader audiences. The findings underscore the importance of fostering intergenerational connections and embracing contemporary tools for cultural expression while maintaining the cultural integrity of these instruments. This study provides insights into how ethnic minority musical traditions can continue to thrive in a rapidly changing world, ensuring the longevity of northwest Guangxi’s rich musical heritage
Interdisciplinary Approaches to Musical Literacy through the Transmission of Guinan Caicha Xi Chinese Opera
This study examines the interdisciplinary approach to musical literacy through the transmission of the Guinan Caicha Xi Chinese Opera, a traditional folk opera from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. This opera, historically performed by tea farmers, integrates storytelling, expressive melodies, and cultural symbolism, serving as a repository of local heritage. However, modernization and digital globalization have led to a decline in transmission, highlighting the need for innovative pedagogical approaches. This research adopts a qualitative case study methodology, focusing on three educational and cultural institutions actively teaching Guinan Caicha Xi Chinese Opera. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, curriculum analysis, and observational studies with nine informants, including a senior opera educator and a digital media specialist. The results reveal that an interdisciplinary approach integrating historical narratives, linguistic analysis, digital tools, and performance-based learning significantly enhances students' engagement and comprehension. While digital resources improve accessibility, traditional oral transmission remains crucial for cultural continuity. The findings suggest that combining traditional and modern educational strategies is essential for the sustainable preservation of Guinan Caicha Xi Chinese Opera in contemporary education. The study recommends future research on the long-term impact of interdisciplinary education and comparative analyses with other regional folk operas to refine the best cultural transmission practices
Preservation of the Literacy of Musical Instruments from the Shang Dynasty of the Central Plains in China
This study investigates the preservation of the literacy of musical instruments from the Shang Dynasty, emphasizing their cultural, ritual, and political significance in the Central Plains of ancient China. Excavated instruments such as xuns, qings, yongs, and bronze bells offer profound insights into the dynasty’s advanced craftsmanship, hierarchical social structure, and the integration of music into religious and political practices. Archaeological sites, including Yinxu, Liulige, Subutun, and Qianzhaodacun, highlight the geographic diversity and cultural exchange inherent in Shang musical traditions. These instruments embody cultural literacy through their ritualistic use, political literacy in their association with social stratification, and technological literacy in their sophisticated design and metallurgical techniques. Their preservation ensures that the knowledge systems and societal values embedded within these instruments remain accessible for future research. The preservation of these artifacts is essential to safeguarding the literacy they carry about Shang society’s values, beliefs, and innovations. By addressing challenges in conservation and ensuring their accessibility for future study, these instruments continue to enrich our understanding of ancient Chinese civilization and its enduring influence
Xiaodiao Chinese Folk Song Literacy in Cultural Heritage Education
Xiaodiao Chinese folk songs, a subgenre of northern Shaanxi folk music, hold significant cultural and historical value, serving as a medium for oral storytelling and the preservation of regional identity. This study examines the role of Xiaodiao Chinese folk song literacy in fostering cultural heritage education. Conducted in Yanchuan County, Shaanxi Province, the research employs qualitative methodologies, including fieldwork, participant observation, and semi-structured interviews with five informants such as folk musicians, educators, and cultural heritage practitioners. Thematic analysis reveals that while Xiaodiao is a valuable tool for intergenerational knowledge transfer, its sustainability is threatened by limited educational resources and declining interest among younger generations. Findings suggest that integrating Xiaodiao into school curricula, utilizing digital platforms, and fostering community-based learning initiatives could revitalize interest and engagement. The study underscores the need for interdisciplinary collaboration among educators, ethnomusicologists, and policymakers to develop comprehensive strategies for preserving Xiaodiao and other forms of Chinese folk music. Future research should explore comparative studies with other regional folk traditions and assess the long-term impact of Xiaodiao literacy programs in cultural education
