Auch dieses Buch nimmt diesen Anfang. Hier ist es aber etwas Anderes. Der aktuelle Strukturwandel in Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft ist derart gravierend, dass auch die deutsche Immobilienwirtschaft aktuell vor den wohl größten Herausforderungen ihrer noch recht jungen Geschichte steht

No full textThomas Manns ›Herr und Hund‹ erkundet eine bemerkenswerte Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Tier. Der Autor und Ich-Erzähler verschmelzen in dieser quasi-autobiographischen Novelle, die konsequent jeglichen Bezug auf den Ersten Weltkrieg, aber auch auf Familie ebenso wie auf Freund und Feind ausspart. Hund und Herr bewerkstelligen die narrative Verführung des Lesers allein durch ihre Abenteuer und Lebenseindrücke. Trotz anfänglicher Bedenken kommt der als intellektueller Snob gezeichnete Herr mit der Promenadenmischung schließlich gut zurecht. Die Analyse der Gegensatzpaare: Aristokrat und Gemeiner, Natur und Kultur, bildet den Gegenstand der vorliegenden Studie

No full textIn meiner Diplomarbeit versuchte ich die naturalistischen Züge bei Thomas Mann in drei seiner Novellen (Der kleine Herr Friedemann, Der Tod in Venedig, Die Betrogene) aufzudecken. Thomas Manns frühe Novellen sind noch unter den Einfluss des Naturalismus entstanden. Den Wegbereiter des Naturalismus auf deutschen Boden, Gerhart Hauptmann hat Thomas Mann sehr hoch geschätzt. So habe ich im Laufe meiner Arbeit auch die Novelle Bahnwärter Thiel berührt. Die Vergleiche zwischen Mann und Hauptmann habe ich gemacht, um die Naturalistische zu betonen. Da in diesen drei Novellen einige typische Mannsche Motive vorkommen, habe ich mich auch mit der Motivgleichheit dieser Erzählungen beschäftigt.
Ich habe die Motive, nach ihrem Vorkommen in den ausgewählten Erzählungen und nach der Häufigkeit, wie oft bestimmte Gedanken vorkommen und was für einen großen Anteil, diese in der Geschichte haben, in die Reihe der Motive eingeordnet.BKnémetegyetem
Diversity loss in the macrophyte vegetation of northwest German streams and rivers between the 1950s and 2010
No full textThis resampling study in 338 semi-permanent plots analyses changes in river macrophyte diversity in 70 water courses (small streams to medium-sized rivers) from four regions of the northwest German lowlands during the last six decades. The total macrophyte species pool decreased between the 1950s and 2010/2011 by 28% (from 51 to 37 species), mean plot-level species richness by 19% (from 4.7 to 3.8 species per relevé) and the number of red-listed species by 40% (from 30 to 18 species). Species loss was associated with marked change in species traits: species with presumably higher mechanical stress tolerance (indicated by low specific leaf area and short leaf longevity) are more abundant today. Nearly, half of the species present in the 1950s had either disappeared or been replaced by other species in the recent relevés. The dramatic impoverishment is likely a consequence of continued nutrient input that drove oligo- and mesotraphent species to extinction, and of restructuring and maintenance works in the water courses that reduced stagnant and undisturbed river habitats, where stress-intolerant species can persist. Efficient measures to reduce the nutrient load and to re-naturalise stream and river beds are urgently needed to halt and reverse the loss of macrophyte diversity

Thomas Mann dankt dem Adressaten für die übersandten Dokumente. Er und seine Frau wären von der Reise zurück, "zu deren erfreulichsten Episoden Stralsund gehörte" [Thomas Mann hielt dort am 18.8.1924 eine Rede zum Gedenken an die Gefallenen des 1. Weltkrieges]. Sie würden von nun an gerne Sommer für Sommer der Ostsee die Treue halten.

The sweat of the brain: representations of intellectual labour in the writings of Edmund Burke, William Cobbett, William Hazlitt and Thomas Carlyle
No full textThis thesis examines representations of intellectual work in the writings of Edmund Burke, William Cobbett, William Hazlitt, and Thomas Carlyle, focusing on their tendency to draw on an analogy between mental and manual labour when representing their own work to themselves and to their readers. It is my argument that while the assimilation of intellectual to physical labour can be seen as a symptom of political bad faith - suggesting, as it does, that thinking and writing are as painful or as difficult as digging and ploughing - the primary purposes of the analogy in the works of these four cultural commentators are, first, to forge rhetorical alliances with ordinary labourers, and, second, to attack other intellectuals engaged in what are alleged to be less arduous and less valuable forms of intellectual endeavour. By blaming the irresponsible activity of disaffected literary men for the political upheaval of the French Revolution, Burke set the terms for debate about the role of educated and literate men in society, a debate in which, for the first time, intellectuals competed for the allegiance of the labouring population. The analogy with manual labour was a key rhetorical site in the struggle to define an ideology for intellectuals, since it claims to ground the speaker or writer in the labouring community at large. For each author, I undertake close readings of several key texts to demonstrate the prevalence of the comparison with manual labour in the representation of intellectual activity. The political-ideological valence of the analogy is never straightforward, I contend, and it often occurs alongside an impulse to emphasise, as well as to elide, what are assumed to be the fundamental differences between mental and manual activity. We witness in the writings of Burke, Cobbett, Hazlitt, and Carlyle a recognisable mode of self-representation, for the desire to assimilate intellectual to material work has persisted
