An Interview with Cass R. Sunstein: Author of The World According to Star Wars

    No full text
The guest editors of special issue 12, Jason W. Ellis and Sean Scanlan, interview Cass R. Sunstein, the Robert Walmsley University Professor at Harvard, where he is founder and director of the Program on Behavioral Economics and Public Policy. He is the author of many books, including the bestseller Nudge: Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth, and Happiness (with Richard H. Thaler). His 2016 book The World According to Star Wars attempts to understand the Star Wars universe in ten chapters through the lenses of Sunstein’s academic interests, namely: culture, sociology, psychology, behavioral science, and political science. The book is both personal and theoretical, practical and academic. It takes accurate measure of the genesis of the movies, the movies themselves, and briefly, but trenchantly, it examines concepts such as reputational cascades and speculates on what Star Wars can teach viewers about constitutional disputes

Industry application of the construction safety framework

    No full text
Despite improvements in OHS performance over the past 20 years, the injury and fatality rate in the Australian Construction Industry remains a matter of concern. Recent investigations into construction site safety culture (Biggs et al., 2006, Dingsdag et al., 2006) have provided a means through which the industry could address this issue. This paper reports on a project to continue development of the Construction Safety Competency Framework by formulating comprehensive implementation guides and support kits covering all 39 Safety Management Tasks and all safety critical positions identified in the Framework. Developmental issues, industry liaison processes, and stakeholder ownership issues are discussed as well as future implications for skill acquisition of safety critical tasks and recruitment and professional development concerns. The anticipated outcomes have the potential to enhance current safety skill and behaviour acquisitions in both 1st tier and 2nd tier construction companies

Rarefied gas effects on the aerodynamics of high area-to-mass ratio spacecraft in orbit

    No full text
The aerodynamic situation of a satellite-on-a-chip operating in low Earth orbit bears some resemblance to a classical Crookes radiometer. The large area-to-mass ratio characteristic of a SpaceChip means that very small surface-dependent forces produce non-negligible accelerations that can significantly alter its orbit. When the temperature of a SpaceChip changes, the drag force can be changed: if the temperature increases, the drag increases (and vice versa). Analytical expressions available in the literature that describe the change in drag coefficient with orbit altitude and SpaceChip temperature compare well with our direct simulation Monte Carlo results presented here. It is demonstrated that modifying the temperature of a SpaceChip could be used for relative orbit control of individual SpaceChips in a swarm, with a maximum change in position per orbit of 50 m being achievable at 600 km altitude
