Intrinsic photoluminescence Stokes shift in semiconductors demonstrated by thin-film CdS formed with pulsed-laser deposition

    Get PDF
Abstract While not reported in the literature, by employing highly oriented, semi-insulating, thin-film CdS as test material, we present the observation of the intrinsic photoluminescence Stokes shift in a semiconductor. Analysis of Raman peaks, transmission, reflection, and photoluminescence shows that during band-to-band emission at room temperature one-to-two longitudinal optical phonons with energy of 39.8meV are emitted. The result is confirmed by the theoretically expected Huang–Rhys factor

Low cost patterning of thin film

    No full text
A novel route for the low-cost patterning of electrical thin films has been established. The process has been developed principally for the manufacture of thermocouples using high-speed reel-to-reel industrial techniques, but could be applied to the manufacture of a wide range of electronic devices including radio frequency identification (RFID) antennae, electrical interconnect, and passive electronic components. The procedure exploits high-volume processes directly to print self-removing masking layers. The process offers substantial advantages over traditional thin-film patterning methods including faster, cheaper production runs. Raw material use and wastage are greatly reduced, affording environmental benefits

Thin film solar cells from Earth abundant materials : growth and characterization of Cu2(ZnSn)(SSe)4 thin films and their solar cells /

The fundamental concept of the book is to explain how to make thin film solar cells from the abundant solar energy materials by low cost. The proper and optimized growth conditions are very essential while sandwiching thin films to make solar cell otherwise secondary phases play a role to undermine the working function of solar cells. The book illustrates growth and characterization of Cu2ZnSn(S1-xSex)4 thin film absorbers and their solar cells. The fabrication process of absorber layers by either vacuum or non-vacuum process is readily elaborated in the book, which helps for further development.Print version record. The fundamental concept of the book is to explain how to make thin film solar cells from the abundant solar energy materials by low cost. Giant dielectric permittivity in ferroelectric thin films : domain wall ping pong

This study was supported by the National Key Basic Research Program of China (No. 2014CB921004), the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Nos. 61225020 and 61176121), and the Program for Professor of Special Appointment (Eastern Scholar) in Shanghai. C.S.H. acknowledges the support of the Global Research Laboratory Program (2012040157) through the National Research Foundation (NRF) of Korea. Date of Acceptance: 02/09/2015The dielectric permittivity in ferroelectric thin films is generally orders of magnitude smaller than in their bulk. Here, we discover a way of increasing dielectric constants in ferroelectric thin films by ca. 500% by synchronizing the pulsed switching fields with the intrinsic switching time (nucleation of domain plus forward growth from cathode to anode). In a 170-nm lead zirconate titanate thin film with an average grain size of 850' this produces a dielectric constant of 8200 with the maximum nucleus density of 3.8 μ1-2, which is one to three orders of magnitude higher than in other dielectric thin films. This permits smaller capacitors in memory devices and is a step forward in making ferroelectric domain-engineered nano-electronics.Peer reviewe

Surface Enhanced Second Harmonic Generation from Macrocycle, Catenane, and Rotaxane Thin Films: Experiments and Theory

    Get PDF
Surface enhanced second harmonic generation (SE SHG) experiments on molecular structures, macrocycles, catenanes, and rotaxanes, deposited as monolayers and multilayers by vacuum sublimation on silver, are reported. The measurements show that the molecules form ordered thin films, where the highest degree of order is observed in the case of macrocycle monolayers and the lowest in the case of rotaxane multilayers. The second harmonic generation activity is interpreted in terms of electric field induced second harmonic (EFISH) generation where the electric field is created by the substrate silver atoms. The measured second order nonlinear optical susceptibility for a rotaxane thin film is compared with that obtained by considering only EFISH contribution to SHG intensity. The electric field on the surface of a silver layer is calculated by using the Delphi4 program for structures obtained with TINKER molecular mechanics/dynamics simulations. An excellent agreement is observed between the calculated and the measured SHG susceptibilities.

Thin plate buckling mitigation and reduction challenges for naval ships

    No full text
Thin plate buckling or distortion on ship structures is an ongoing issue for shipbuilders. It has been identified that a significant number of factors can be put in place based on prior knowledge and good practice. Additionally, research work aimed at reducing thin plate distortion has been relatively prolific, particularly in the area of simulation modelling. However, the uptake in the research findings by industry has been relatively low. A number of these findings are discussed and their application considered. For any further reductions in thin plate distortion to be generated there is a clear need for better interaction between the research institutes and the industry

Development of lead-free thin-film dielectrics for capacitor applications

    Get PDF
This PhD project aims to develop lead-free thin-film dielectric materials for fixed value, voltage tunable and high-k zipping variable capacitors using growth techniques that can be scaled for silicon batch fabrication. The thesis specifically details the growth and characterisation of barium zirconate titanate (BZT) and bismuth zinc niobate (BZN) dielectric thin films. Fixed value and tunable capacitors have been realised through the use of low and high permittivity dielectric thin film materials in both the amorphous and crystalline states. Planar devices fabricated using BZT and BZN dielectric thin films were grown by sol-gel and RF magnetron sputtering, respectively. The effects of different bottom electrodes were also investigated. Capacitors in a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) [metal-ferroelectric-metal (MFM) for BZT] structure have been fabricated to characterise the dielectric films at low frequency to 300 kHz. Cont/d

Magnetic functionality of thin film perovskite hybrids

    Get PDF
Organic-inorganic perovskite-like hybrids combine the properties of both the perovskite structure and metal-organic framework compounds. We investigated the magnetic properties of a Cu-based hybrid material grown as a thin film by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. We show that the long alkyl spacers in the hybrid thin film only slightly reduce the ferromagnetic transition temperature in comparison with the bulk. Most interestingly, the single ion anisotropy is larger for the Cu-based hybrid film than for the bulk hybrid. The hybrid thin film consists of two polymorphs in which the ferromagnetic domains are effectively pinned by an antiferromagnetic phase. This leads to a large enhancement of the coercive field enabling memory functionality. (C) 2018 Author(s)
