Loan supply in Germany during the financial crisis

    No full text
Distinguishing pure supply effects from other determinants of price and quantity in the market for loans is a notoriously difficult problem. Using German data, we employ Bayesian vector autoregressive models with sign restrictions on the impulse response functions in order to enquire the role of loan supply and monetary policy shocks for the dynamics of loans to non-financial corporations. For the three quarters following the Lehman collapse, we find very strong negative loan supply shocks, while monetary policy was essentially neutral. Nevertheless, the historical decomposition shows a cumulated negative impact of loan supply shocks and monetary policy shocks on loans to non-financial corporations, due to the lagged effects of past loan supply and monetary policy shocks. However, these negative effects on loans to non-financial corporations are overcompensated by positive other shocks, which implies that loans developed more favorably than implied by the model, over the past few quarters. --Loan supply,Bayesian VAR,sign restrictions

Low nitric oxide concentrations in exhaled gas and nasal airways of mammals without paranasal sinuses

To investigate whether relevant levels of nasal nitric oxide (NO) are produced in the absence of paranasal sinuses, we studied 17 healthy baboons, mammals without any paranasal sinuses. The animals were anesthetized with ketamine hydrochloride and breathed spontaneously. While the baboons breathed through a face mask (mouths closed) connected to a respirator, NO concentrations in exhaled gas were sampled from the expiratory limb and analyzed by chemiluminescence. While the animals were breathing ambient air, nasal gas was sampled via a thin plastic tube and analyzed for NO concentrations by chemiluminescence. Mean NO concentration in the exhaled gas was 1.00 ± 0.59 parts/billion, and NO release was 4.28 ± 2.72 nl/min. A NO concentration of 4.79 ± 2.08 parts/billion was found in the nasal gas (NO release: 7.18 ± 3.13 nl/min). An age-dependent increase in nasal NO levels was not observed. Exhaled and nasal NO concentrations in baboons were markedly lower than in mammals with paranasal sinuses, suggesting that paranasal sinuses might be an anatomic requirement for production of relevant nasal NO levels. </jats:p

Whaling Will Never Do For Me: The American Whaleman in the Nineteenth Century

] just begin to find out that whaling will never do for me and have determined to leave the ship here if possible. That sentiment, expressed by a foremast hand aboard the ship Caroline in 1843, is one shared by many of the whalemen in this fascinating book. Interest in Herman Melville\u27s Moby Dick has contributed to a substantial literature on the history and lore of the industry. But not until now has the vast body of surviving whaleship logs and journals been used to paint an encompassing picture of the difficult but colorful life aboard nineteenth-century American whaling vessels.Briton Cooper Busch, author of a definitive history of the American sealing industry, in this book only incidentally discusses the actual chase for whales. His focus instead is the life of whalemen at sea, and particularly the harsh discipline that kept men aboard through long and often dispiriting years. Busch depicts the complex social world aboard ship, defining and detailing such issues as crime and punishment, competing racial elements, the social distance between officers and men, sexual behavior, and the role of women aboard ships. For oppressed, discouraged, or simply bored whalemen, several escapes existed, from the rarest of all mutiny through labor protests of various types, to individual desertion or appeal to an American consul abroad. To each of these topics Busch devotes a chapter. He also provides glimpses of those occasional moments of relief such as a Fourth of July celebration and such somber moments as a death at sea.Fascinating details and original quotations from individual whalemen make this book more than a study of general trends. For anyone with even a casual interest in whaling, it is indispensable. Briton Cooper Busch is William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of History at Colgate University, where he has been chairman of the department and director of the division of social sciences. He is author of eight previous books in maritime and diplomatic history.https://uknowledge.uky.edu/upk_social_history/1001/thumbnail.jp

    ELECTRONIC-STRUCTURE OF THE DISILENYL RADICAL-ANION

Schoeller W, BUSCH T. ELECTRONIC-STRUCTURE OF THE DISILENYL RADICAL-ANION. JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL ORGANIC CHEMISTRY. 1994;7(5):251-255.According to quantum chemical calculations, the anion radical of disilene adopts a syn- or anti-pyramidal geometry. The former is not a stable entity on the electronic hypersurface and it decreases further in energy by rotation of the Si-Si bond. Energy optimization of various structural alternatives reveals for the anion radical an Si-Si bond slightly longer than a single bond. The anti geometry prefers a C2h geometry whereas the syn geometry resembles a silylene coupled with a silylene radical anion. The fragmentation of disilene into two silylene units is less exothermic for the neutral species than for the anion (radical), as examined by the ab initio calculations
