Macrobii Ambrosii Aurelii Theodosii ... : In Somnium Scipionis : lib. II : Saturnaliorum, lib. VII. : ex uariis, ac uetustissimis codicibus recogniti, & aucti.
This treatise by Macrobius is a commentary in two books on the Somnium Scipionis narrated by Cicero at the end of his De re publica. The nature of the dream, in which the elder Scipio appears to his adopted grandson, and describes the life of the good after death and the constitution of the universe from the Stoic point of view. Macrobius also discourses upon many points of physics in a series of essays which show the astronomical notions then current. The moral elevation of the fragment of Cicero gave this work a great popularity in the Middle Ages and was the most widely read Latin compendium of Neoplatonism of the 5th century A.D.; This treatise includes one map on p. 154 [i.e. 144] where Europe, Africa and Asia are shown in the upper hemisphere as totally separated from a great southern continent [i.e. Antipodum Nobis Incognita] occupying the lower hemisphere by an intervening great ocean [i.e. Alveus Oceani]. He further labels his map with climatic zones according to the theory of Parmenides (as also more graphically shown on p. 119): two zones close to the poles subject to frigid air [i.e. frigida], either side of the equator a torrid zone [i.e. perusta] and between these two moderate or temperate zones [i.e. temperata]. Decoratively, he has 14 winds blowing across the globe.; In the 'Saturnalia', an account of discussions held at the house of Vettius Praetextatus during the feast of the Saturnalia, Macrobius discusses the choice and proper use of food and drink, describing the courses at a banquet with their appropriate wines.
The emperor Theodosius was one of the few key figures in the foundation of the modern Europe, because Christianity became the official religion of the Roman empire in his reign. As the modern European civilisation cannot be considered without the decisive contribution of Christianity, the supportive role of Theodosius in the victory of Christianity is still worth of looking at closely. Therefore the main idea behind this theses is to offer an analysis for the integration of Christian religion and the state in the age of Theodosius the Great. This work is shaped by four chapters. In the introductory chapter I provide an observation on sources and theoretical frame of the work. In the first main chapter I take the issue of the story of Christiaity in the fourth century before Theodosius to show how a legacy the emperor received from his predecessors. In the second main chapter the imperial relationships with the other religion in the Christianizing the fourth century. In the third chapter I deal with the ecclesiastical politics and religious developments during the reign of Theodosius. The final chapter consist of some observations on the reign of Theodosius
Theodosius, a "látható isten" : Pacatus vallásáról = Theodosius, the "visible God" : on the religion of Pacatus
The religion of Pacatus, author of the panegyric addressed to Theodosius I, has been debated by scholars during the past decades. In her 2003 monograph, Anne-Marie Turcan-Verkerk came to the conclusion that Pacatus could have also been the author of the poem De cereo paschali. On the basis of the interpretation of this poem, Turcan-Verkerk argues that Pacatus Drepanius should be regarded as a committed Christian author. In my opinion Pacatus, at the time of the composition of the panegyric, rather would have accepted the beliefs of (pagan) henotheism. The change in the religious policy of Theodosius I – the incipient tolerance towards paganism which switched to the persecution of the pagans – could have played a part in Pacatus’choice to meet the requirements of the period and those of the emperor in his writings. In the second part of my article I publish the first Hungarian translation of the caputs 15–20 of Pacatus’ Panegyricus
