Reviewing two sides of the socialization literature: a comprehensive theoretical model of social receptivity of newcomers

    No full text
The purpose of this paper is to review the literature that investigated the socialization process, considering different perspectives and highlighting existing gaps. Ultimately, proposing a comprehensive theoretical model of social receptivity of newcomers. In the first part, the focus is on the flourishing literature that examined the newcomer’s perspective of socialization, which was depicted as a learning or an adaptation process. In the second part, the studies that investigated the co-workers’ perspective during the socialization process are reported. The social receptivity to a new member is interpreted as the resulting of two levels: the newcomer characteristics and the co-workers’ characteristics. In the third and last part, relying on the two lines of research reviewed, it is proposed a model of the socialization process, in which the two levels of analysis predict social receptivity. In turn, social receptivity should intervene in enhancing newcomer adjustment, as depicted by proximal (role clarity, self-efficacy, knowledge of organizational culture, and stress) and distal (job attitudes, engagement, performance, and turnover) outcomes

My partner looks, swims, and quacks like a duck: The need for cognitive closure in the interpersonal perception of romantic engagement in close relationships

    No full text
Individuals are motivated to have a reassuring vision of their partners' characteristics that are central to the relationship such as romantic engagement. This can be particularly true for individuals with high levels of need for closure (NFC). In order to preserve a comforting and stable view of the relationship, they might be motivated by greater assumed similarity and lesser accuracy in perceiving partners' romantic engagement. Three-hundred-fifteen heterosexual couples filled out a questionnaire with measures of NFC and self- and other-reported romantic engagement (harmonious and obsessive). Results showed that, for both types of romantic engagement, assumed similarity and accuracy effects were positive and significant. Moreover, NFC had a moderating role in the assumed similarity and accuracy effects in harmonious romantic engagement. In particular, high NFC individuals showed greater assumed similarity and lower accuracy compared to low NFC individuals

The Relationship Between the Need for Cognitive Closure, Stereotyped In-group and the Out-group Morality, and Prejudice towards the Out-group

    No full text
Several studies demonstrated that a high need for cognitive closure (NFC) is associated with higher prejudice towards the out-group. This study aims to investigate how this effect can be moderated by attributions of morality to the in-group and the out-group. A questionnaire was administered to 725 participants. The results showed a positive relationship between NFC and prejudice when the in-group was evaluated as more moral than the out-group. This relationship was weaker when the out-group was evaluated as more moral than the in-group. These findings implicated that it is possible to reduce prejudice in individuals with high NFC by manipulating perceptions of in-group and out-group morality

Can We Barter Local Taxes for Maintaining Our Green? A Psychological Perspective

    No full text
Previous research highlighted that the desire for neighborhood improvement is an antecedent of the citizens’ involvement in green urban areas maintenance. Nevertheless, the topic of civic participation in the maintenance of green areas is not yet well developed in the literature and a link with local legislation is missing. We investigate the intention of participation in such maintenance through a web-based experiment. We hypothesize that stimuli of poor (vs. good) maintenance will be associated with a higher intention of contributing to the upkeep of green areas following the administrative barter law. The administrative barter is a law approved in Italy, which gives citizens the possibility of a reduction of local taxes in exchange for their involvement in the improvement of the territory. One hundred ninety-six participants (Mage = 33.81) were assigned randomly to good maintenance condition (n = 100) or poor maintenance condition (n = 96). The level of maintenance was manipulated through photographs of a neighborhood depicting good or poor maintenance of the urban green ornamentation. Results pointed out that people showed a greater willingness to engage in the improvement of green urban areas in the poor condition as compared to the good condition, according to the administrative barter law. This study suggests that local legislation may provide an incentive fostering citizens’ involvement in green urban areas maintenance

Stay at home behavior during COVID-19: The role of person-home relationships

    No full text
Numerous studies investigated the adherence to health behaviors during COVID-19; however, the majority of approaches considered individual factors, while neglecting the importance of people’s relationship with their home. The purpose of this contribution is to integrate this aspect into a behavioral model to understand stay at home behavior during COVID-19 lockdowns. More specifically, this study combines a traditional approach employing variables from the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and risk perception with Home place attachment and Past stay at home experience to explain people’s decisions to stay at home during the COVID-19 lockdown. Data collection was conducted online during the first Italian lockdown with 794 valid answers. A structural equation model found that the predicted model has a good fit, and all variables are found to significantly predict Stay at home behavior, except for Descriptive norms and Risk perception. Place attachment and Past stay at home experience are found to positively predict Stay at home intention, through Attitude and Perceived behavioral control, respectively. Contrary to the hypotheses, Risk perception is not found to be significant, Findings point to the importance of considering the person-home relationship in adherence to stay at home behavior. Results are discussed for their implication for behavioral coping during future pandemics as well as for their relevance in daily life after the pandemic
