Partial oxidation reforming of simulated biogas in gliding arc discharge system

Plasma assisted, partial oxidation reforming of biogas is considered to be a promising technology to produce synthesis gas. In this work, a 0.1 kW gliding arc plasma reformer was employed to investigate the effects of biogas composition and oxygen availability on CH4 and CO2 conversions, as well as the product distribution. Air was used in the partial oxidation of biogas. The results showed that at low CH4/O2 ratio or high oxygen availability, increasing CH4 content appeared to show higher H2 yield and CH4 conversion. Increasing CH4/O2 ratio adversely affected H2 and CO yields, and CH4 conversion. Optimum condition was found at CH4/CO2 of 90:10 and CH4/O2 of 1.2 for the maximum CH4 conversion and H2 yield of 45.7 and 25.3%, respectively

This research aims to design and test automatic auxiliary heating unit for solar dryer cabinets to improve drying performance. The auxiliary heating unit utilizes an infrared furnace with cooking gas, a fin heat exchanger, and a blower. It is equipped with an automatic control system to regulate the temperature of the dryer. An agricultural product used in the experiment was fresh pineapple slides. The experimental test was divided into three cases; using (i) solar dryer, (ii) hot air dryer from the automatic auxiliary heating unit and, (iii) combined solar dryer with auxiliary heating unit. Temperature of the automatic auxiliary heating unit was controlled at 55.0 ± 3.0 °C and the air flow speed in the dryer cabinet was 1.5 ± 0.2 m/s. The thermal output from the automatic auxiliary heating unit was more than 2700 W. From the tests, it was shown that the drying time could be reduced to 12.5 h from 32 h, when the solar dryer was combined with the automatic auxiliary heating unit, compared to using only solar dryer. Dried pineapple products showed good quality. Comparative analysis of CIELAB color properties indicated low pigmentation. From a simple economic analysis, return on investment was less than 3.0 months. The use of automatic auxiliary heating units to the solar dryer enabled reduction in drying time and improved product quality

For the hot air dryer combined with the 40 kilohertz of ultrasonic vibration system, a product placement tray was developed, with the installation of the ultrasonic vibration system along with a heat dissipation system for the vibrating head to dissipate accumulated heat. This system design allowed drying at higher temperatures. White turmeric was chosen as the experimental sample due to its medicinal properties and the presence of various important compounds. The drying experiments were conducted at temperatures of 50, 60, and 70 degrees Celsius using both the hot air dryer and the hot air dryer combined with the ultrasonic vibration system to compare drying performance. The results showed that the hot air dryer combined with the ultrasonic vibration system required less time for drying white turmeric, exhibited higher moisture removal rates, and achieved better drying efficiency compared to the hot air dryer alone at all drying temperature ranges. Additionally, at 70 degrees Celsius, the lowest specific energy consumption for drying the product was observed. Comparative analysis of product color, antioxidant activity, phenolics, flavonoids, pinostrobin, and panduratin A was also conducted. The optimal condition for preserving the active compounds in dried white fingerroot at the highest levels is drying at 60 degrees Celsius combined with an ultrasonic vibration system. The evaporation rate, thermal efficiency, and energy consumption were 0.250 kilogram/hour, 20.72 percent, and 29.960 kilowatt-hour/kilogram, respectively
