The topic of the bachelor's thesis is "Miyamoto Musashi's Character Analysis in Literature". The first part is devoted to the biography of Miyamoto Musashi, summarizing and presenting the information about his biography, struggles, achievements, philosophy and teachings. In this way, the author of the thesis will be able to understand Miyamoto as a historical personality, which will help further analysis of the image to find out, how accurate the representation of the image in contemporary literary works. The second part focuses on two works in which Miyamoto Musashi is the main character - Eiji Yoshikawa's novel “Musashi” and Takehiko Inoue's manga “Vagabond.” In this part, the author reviews the plot of the literary works and studies the events described in them, thus concluding what the readers of the literary works created by Miyamoto Musashi - whether it corresponds to the life of a true samurai, or whether Miyamoto serves only as an image in fictional events. The main objective of the thesis is to explore how Miyamoto Musashi depicts literature and whether he fits historically

The Way He Walked Alone – Miyamoto Musashi’s Character in the Context of His DokkōdōMiyamoto Musashi (1584–1645) is undoubtedly the most famous Japanese swordsmen known outside of the Land of the rising Sun. Despite this, his life remains largely a mystery, and is known today mainly through the historical novel written by Eiji Yoshikawa (1892–1962), its many film adaptations and also his treaty called Gorin-no sho (The Book of Five Rings, 1645). This article however focuses exclusively on Musashi’s last written testimony – The Dokkōdō (The Way of Walking Alone, 1645). The author is trying to explain the circumstances of its creation and the essence of its meaning. It is also an attempt of interpretation and – above all, a look at Musashi through the prism  of the rules contained in The Dokkōdō. For the purpose of this analysis, three separate translations of Musashi’s Dokkōdō had been made into Polish. The author hopes that this modest contribution to the debate on Miyamoto Musashi will be a subject to further discussion

    No full text
Social Solidarity among the Japanese in Seattle is a rare and irreplaceable study of Japanese American life prior to World War II. Its focus is the social relational network of the Japanese community as dominated by the immigrant, first generation Issei -- the intimate fusion of expectations, obligations, and reciprocity that prevailed in the years between immigration and internment. First published in 1939, Miyamoto\u27s monograph was reprinted in 1981 and 1984 by the Asian American Studies Program at the University of Washington, each time with a new introduction by the author

Numerical Simulation on the Transition of Tornado-like Vortices

    No full text
The transition of tornado-like vortices is numerically investigated with the use of nonhydrostatic axisymmetric and three-dimensional models. Tornado-like vortices are generated by imposing a specified external force near the center axis of the computational domains that are rotating at a constant angular velocity. When the vortex transition from one to two-celled vortex occurs, there is an overshoot of the radial inflow near the surface. The overshoot flow turns upward, rebounding outward to a larger radius. At the same time, downdraft penetrates to the surface at the rotating axis. The overshoot is generated by coupled effects of inward advection and inward pressure gradient force. The downdraft is caused by downward pressure gradient. Thereafter, the two celled vortex transform to a multiple-vortex structure because the horizontal shear and Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities occur in the non-axisymmetric flow. The transition of tornado-like vortices is numerically investigated with the use of nonhydrostatic axisymmetric and three-dimensional models. The watakushi shōsetsu, or shishōsetsu — translated as I novel or narrative of the self — is a term used to classify many literary works written in Japan, especially those from the first half of the 20th, it brings together the most diverse types of texts under its name as long as the subject dealt with in them can be associated with reality, understood as the experiences lived by its author. This article deals with the trajectory of the Japanese writer Miyamoto Yuriko (1899-1951) in whose work political engagement and efforts to denounce the female condition in Japanese society play a central role, and examines the extent to which her writing, in which many autobiographical elements are present, would be further or closer to the notion of watakushi shōsetsu.O watakushi shōsetsu, ou shishōsetsu — que pode ser traduzido como romance, escrita ou narrativa do eu — é um termo usado para classificar muitas obras escritas no Japão, especialmente aquelas da primeira metade do século XX, e reúne os mais diversos tipos de textos sob a sua rubrica, bastando que o assunto tratado neles possa ser associado à realidade, entendida como as experiências vividas por seu autor.

THE ANALYSIS OF FORMULA IN THE LEGEND OF JAPANESE SAMURAI RUROUNI KENSHIN AND MIYAMOTO MUSHASI: POPULAR LITERARY APPROACH

    No full text
This research examined the formulation of legendary heroic stories and popular in Japan about the story of Rurouni Kenshin or often referred to as Samurai X and Miyamoto Mushashi atu called Samurai I. The two stories are then adapted into the screen and get a positive response and even enter in star 7 in the Box Office and imdb. It’s clear that the two of the stories surged as apopular works and deserve to be analyzed by using the popular literature approach. To examine the hypothesis, researchers used the Cawelty theory with the terminology of formula/formulae. By using the Cawelty concept, this research examined the formulas used in both Japanese legend stories Rurouni Kenshin and Miyamoto Mushashi regarding similarities and differences as well as the factors that caused them to become popular according to the values and tastes of the audience. The results of the study indicated that the two action legends generally have the same action story formula as the cawelty formula, story/narrative structure, and similar motives for action. The difference from the two stories lines mainly in the way of author presents mythology and metaphor. Formula is one of the main factors that make a story like and get a positive response in the market, including consistency, originality, and the ability to attract miracles, place and style in the presentation of stories.

"Rivers of the soul" by Miyamoto Yuriko : biography of the author, translation, discussion

    No full text
Miyamoto Yuriko has been acclaimed as a writer for many years, although it is perhaps only since the war that her works have been made more readily available to the public. During much of her life, she was placed under a writing ban by the authorities and could publish little. Moreover, the works she wrote as a Communist, and her works on women in particular, were more readily accepted by the public after various social changes occurred in post-war Japan. Most of her works, apart from essays and criticisms of which she wrote a great many, are autobiographical. This lends a deep credibility and vitality to her writing since her growth and development, both as a woman and as a writer, are vividly portrayed. One of her works, "Kokoro no Kawa", is a short story describing in semi-autobiographical style her first marriage to Araki Shigeru. It depicts the protagonist's development, and her increasing awareness and understanding of her position, to the final climax of the story. A translation of "Kokoro no Kawa" is here presented, together with a biography of Yuriko and a detailed analysis of the story itself

Molecular Fingerprint Imaging to Identify Dental Caries Using Raman Spectroscopy

    No full text
Tooth loss impairs mastication, deglutition and esthetics and affects systemic health through nutritional deficiency, weight loss, muscle weakness, delayed wound healing, and bone fragility. Approximately 90% of tooth loss is due to dental caries and periodontal disease. Accordingly, early treatment of dental caries is essential to maintaining quality of life. To date, the clinical diagnosis of dental caries has been based on each dentist’s subjective assessment, but this visual method lacks objectivity. To improve diagnostic ability, highly sensitive quantitative methods have been developed for the diagnosis and prevention of dental caries and are gradually becoming a mandatory item in modern dentistry. High-resolution Raman spectroscopy is a suitable tool for recognizing the subtle structural changes that occur in dental enamel in already developed or, more importantly, incipient dental caries. Raman analysis could soon emerge as a breakthrough in dentistry because of its high diagnostic sensitivity. In this study, we build upon our previous findings in a new analysis of dental caries using Raman spectroscopy imaging and discuss the possibility of using Raman photonic imaging in support of objective diagnostics in dentistry. Our findings support the Raman method of caries detection in comparison with other conventional or new approaches

Abstract Background: A cancer stem cell (cancer initiating cell, CSC) is considered capable of self -replication, self-differentiation, drug resistance, and immune evasion. Recently, CSC has become increasingly important in the treatment of malignant tumors. Cancer stem cells express specific molecules termed CSC marker, including sex determining region Y-box2 (SOX2), and octamer-binding transcription factor 4 (Oct4), and their expression has been reported to be the potential prognostic values. However, the prognostic values of SOX2 and Oct4 expression in patients with oral cancer are less understood. [Purpose]The aims of present study were to evaluate the expression of SOX2 and Oct4 in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and to elucidate the relationships among the CSC marker expression, clinical stages, histological differentiation, the classification of invasion mode, cerebral lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, and disease-free survival rate. Materials and Methods: Tissue specimens were obtains from 108 patients with OSCC after surgery or biopsy. Immunohistochemistry was used to assess SOX2 and Oct4 protein using at least 10% staining-positive cells as the definition of positive staining. Results: Immunohistochemical analysis of 108 cases showed that 42 cases (39%) expressed SOX2. There was no significant association between SOX2 expression and tumor size, invasion mode or histological differentiation. However, there was significant association between SOX2 expression and distant metastasis or disease-free survival rate at stage 1 and 2 patients (73 cases). Otherwise, seventy cases (65%) cases of 108 OSCC patients expressed Oct4. There was significant association between Oct4 expression and histological differentiation. There was no significant association between Oct4 expression and tumor size, invasion mode, metastasis, or disease-free survival rate. Conclusions: These findings suggested that the expression of SOX2 may be good marker indicating survival in patients with OSCC.
