"Un Paese di paesi": riflessioni per la cura di borghi e paesaggi abbandonati del Molise
In a recent study, Italy is defined as a "Country of countries", a whole of many territorial realities that
are often marginal, abandoned, and forgotten and whose future seems increasingly uncertain. In the
vast national panorama of the so-called inner areas and fragile territories, already much investigated
and analysed by experts in the sector, Molise plays a unique role because it has always received less
attention than similar contexts. However, its architectural, archaeological, and landscape heritage can
be considered no less important. This contribution – starting from the concept of the landscape as a
system, considered by Salvatore Settis as a peculiarity of the Italian territory and characterised by a
harmonious integration of city-countryside, cultural heritage-landscape, nature-culture – is based on
the importance of knowledge as the first tool for the care of these sites. Only a few examples of the
many cases in Molise are briefly analysed, such as Rocchetta Alta, Pesche, and Monacilioni, which
are emblematic in showing the centuries-old history and traditions that have characterised this region,
but unfortunately, today they are united by extensive ruins in place of primitive settlements. Care, and therefore responsibility, towards what we can define as ‘ruins of modernity’ must be the key to transforming these landscapes of memory into lived landscapes where a community returns to recognise itself
Between landscape and fortified architecture: traces and memory of rural civilization in the territory of Pesche in Molise
The small village of Pesche in Molise extends along the slopes of Monte San Marco, in a perfect symbiosis
between architecture and nature. Pesche’s origins date back already between the 5th and 6th centuries,
when the steep natural slope was chosen as a place for the construction of a safe village, consisting of many
small houses side by side and built using local limestone. Its position, guarding the Isernia valley, charac terized at the top by the ruins of the castle-enclosure, supports the idea that Pesche may have played a
dominant role in the passage along the ancient Pescasseroli-Candela sheep track. The castle-enclosure
itself is evidence of the traditional medieval building site, but also of a rural civilization which until the
beginning of the 20th century probably continued to live in these places, used as houses, stables and barns.
This contribution focuses on the architectural and material characteristics of the buildings in the territory
of Pesche, which, despite the current state of decay and neglect, are evidence of the use of local materials
and the use of construction techniques that have characterized the traditional Molise building site
Roberto Pane e il racconto della Carta di Venezia: esiti della nozione di “ambiente” tra gli anni Sessanta e Settanta
The concept of «urban and landscape setting» as an object of protection, explicated in Article 1 of the Venice Char-ter, testifies to a strong link with Roberto Pane’s theory of environmental values, which – matured especially in the post-war years – was to accompany him uninterruptedly throughout the rest of his career.
By retracing the occasions in which the content and objectives of the Venice Charter are described and popularized by Pane himself, the proposed contribution intends to focus on how that very concept of the setting, that helped de-fine an extended dimension of protection, matures and evolves over a decade
Il centro storico di Capua tra danni bellici, ricostruzioni e restauri: genesi e primi esiti del Piano del 1947
The historic centre of Capua is one of the most damaged by the bombing of the II World War among those in the province of Caserta. This contribution analyses the Reconstruction Plan approved in 1947, focusing on the studies that led to its drafting and the first choices made, as well as on the contribution made during the emergency phase by leading figures in the field of architecture, town planning and protection of the second half of the 20th century in Italy
