"Disney is the Tiffany’s and I am the Woolworth's of the business": A critical re-analysis of the business philosophies, production values and studio practices of animator-producer Paul Houlton Terry
No full textThis thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Animator-producer Paul Houlton Terry has been portrayed as having little passion for the animation he produced and being more concerned with making a profit than producing entertaining cartoons with high production values. The purpose of the dissertation is to re-evaluate Terry‘s legacy to animated cartooning by analyzing his business philosophies, production values, and studio practices.
Application of four psychodynamic factors to the early life and career of Terry, 1887-1929, found that his economic decision making was characterized by: an external locus of control, risk-averse financial behaviour, extreme saving behaviour through precaution, and shrewd money management practices. Based on Terry‘s historical responses to twelve major economic, technological, or institutional forces of change for the period 1929-1955, the psychodynamic factors were found to provide accurate explanations for his studio practices and production decisions.
There was no evidence to support the conclusion that three early career disappointments undermined Terry‘s intrinsic motivation to create animated cartoons. Rather, Terry‘s lack of risk taking, external locus of control, tight studio production schedule, desire to compete with neighbour studio Fleischer, difficulty in separating financial rewards from creative processes in animation, and practice of undertaking surveillance measures on staff may have undermined his and his studio‘s creativity. Archival research found Terry to possess strong passions for and to have made significant creative contributions to the field of animation.
Biographical research found that Terry retained a stable nucleus of highly talented artists who dedicated a significant portion of their working careers to the studio. An analysis of the cel aesthetics of a random sample of animated cartoons produced during the years 1930-1955 found that Terry created animated cartoons with above average cel aesthetics when compared to the other studios thereby supporting an inference that Terry was motivated to producing quality crafted animation. Further research is suggested into the role psychodynamic factors and economic decision-making play in the film production process and a clarification of Terry‘s legacy to the field of animated cartoons

L.A. Tabulae ad Astra
No full textL.A.: Tabulae ad Astra (Los Angeles: Maps to the Stars) is a series of prints integrating portions of street maps of Los Angeles with gestural lines, impromptu marks from testing pen nibs, and cutting lines on boards—all unwittingly produced in the artist’s studio while working on other projects. The combined layers of intersecting and overlapping marks take on a surprising cartographic character that is reinforced by additional ancient map-like elements such as measurement grids, Latin phrases, beastiary, and scale markers. The resultant prints are also physically connected to the Los Angeles landscape, being printed on paper that was first soaked and stained in the waters of the L.A. River. Together Tabulae ad Astra plays on the constant tensions of control vs. freedom, order vs. complexity, safety vs. adventure, and city vs. wilderness.

The myths of "We got Next" : a study of the Los Angeles Times' coverage of the L.A. Lakers and the L.A. Sparks
No full textThe type and amount of coverage the Los Angeles Times provided the National Basketball Association's Los Angeles Lakers and the Women's National Basketball Association's Los Angeles Sparks and the reasons behind the coverage is examined through a content analysis and interviews with Los Angeles Times sports department employees. Five research questions are posed: What type and amount of coverage does The Los Angeles Times sports section provide the L.A. Lakers and L.A. Sparks before, during and after their seasons? What differences, if any, exist between the coverage provided each team? Do these differences reflect the values and beliefs of the spo1is department staff regarding women's involvement and importance in the sport of professional basketball? To what extent can individual sports department employees at The Los Angeles Times influence the type and amount of coverage provided the Lakers and the Sparks? What factors do the Times sports department employees recognize as influences on the coverage provided the Lakers and the Sparks? The content analysis revealed that the Lakers received over 400 percent more textual coverage than the Sparks. Other units of measure also show significant differences in the coverage provided these two teams. By employing the myths of 1) TV coverage and ratings, 2) attendance numbers, 3) tradition, 4) space availability, 5) reader interest and 6) competition between sports, through their own words, the Los Angeles Times sports department explains the coverage provided the Lakers and the Sparks.California State University, Northridge. The Interchangeable Roles of Music and Technology in Computer-Supported Education
No full textScientific literature has frequently focused on the contribution offered by technology to support music education at various levels. A less investigated subject is the possibility of using multimedia and musical languages to encourage the acquisition of digital competences. In this vision, the roles of mediator and disciplinary goal– which in the context of computer-supported education are traditionally assigned to technology and music, respectively – are reversed. These concepts will be exemplified through applications which explore the relationship between music and technology from a new point of view, merging the two fields and making traditional roles more nuanced, thus encouraging the development of higher-order thinking skills. Towards a better understanding and new tools for soft fruit quality control
No full textProspects for the production of new and more tasteful strawberry and blackcurrant fruits may be achieved not only through genetic improvement and release of new varieties but also by adapting current cultivation systems and boosting the development of diagnostics tools for better quality control (QC) by growers and breeders.
The balance between sugar and acid content (S/A ratio) and even the content of certain health-related compounds within the fruit, may act as important indices of consumer acceptability or overall berry quality. The S/A ratio, of fruits from 23 blackcurrant and 19 strawberry cultivars ranged from 1.84-4.39 and 3.9-9.6, respectively. S/A ratios generally increased during blackcurrant ripening (up to 1.3-fold higher for certain cultivars), declined slightly during postharvest storage at different temperatures or even changed when the same cultivar was grown at different locations (up to 30% of variation). Synthesis of health-related compounds (i.e. anthocyanins) occurred even after harvest and was strongly influenced by storage temperature and maturity at harvest. Deficit irrigation (DI) at different fruit developmental stages, was investigated as a potential strategy to improve strawberry fruit quality in a range of cultivars. The S/A ratio and the concentration of health-related compounds (viz. individual anthocyanins, antioxidant capacity) were much greater (i.e. 1.4-fold higher antioxidant capacity), for some cultivars, in fruits from DI-treated plants as compared with fully irrigated plants. The taste- and health-related composition of both blackcurrant and strawberries considerably changed from year-to-year demonstrating the influence of agroclimatic conditions on overall fruit quality.
