THE CHANGING SECONDARY CURRICULUM IN ENGLAND

    No full text
The writer  engages  with the debate around the balancing act in the development of curricula between knowledge and skills. There is an advocacy of the idea that content should be given greater prominence. The recent developments in the English curriculum are used to illustrate the dichotomy between skills and knowledge. The author argues that this is in fact a false dichotomy and that higher order skills become undermined if they are not developed alongside a significant knowledge base. Writers such as Bloom and Hirsch are deployed to substantiate the presented arguments.A cogent critique is offered to support subject based, knowledge dominant curricula. Evidence is marshalled to imply that many recent moves to develop vocational curricula by emphasising skills has diluted their value and function as a progressional root to further education and employment

The present work aims to analyze the political and aesthetic relationship in the work of Lima Barreto, more specifically in the works O cemetery dos Vivos, Diário intimate and Diário do hospício. To this end, some nuclei are strategically activated to think about this relationship, such as language, representation, the notion of militant literature, narrative space and the concept of Biopower and biopolitics developed by Michael Foucault. Firstly, the methodological form is constructed and how it can play an important and strategic role in our analysis. The genealogy of powers aims to reflect on the concept of history, the problem of knowledge and truth. The problematization of the literary in Lima Barreto's work is perhaps the starting and ending point of this work. The literary work and criticism produced by the author corroborate a new perspective on the literary concept. By pointing to a perspective of militant and black literature, the author constructs a problematization of the conception of Brazilian literature; This conception that Regina Dalcastagnè demonstrates was never plural, but a homogeneous conception, converted into a unity that never corresponded with diversity, difference and plurality. In theory, the conception of literature is linked to a vision of the world and society. If for Lukács the literature of the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century was essentially bourgeois, Lima Barreto's literary work and theoretical understanding go in the opposite direction of this status quo. This, perhaps, is the great difference of Barrete literature. By promoting an idea of art that is in line with life, with a humanist and alterity purpose. Briefly, the work points to the idea that in addition to the author contributing to a more real concept of Brazilian literature, he, through some elements of narrative theory: space, time, characters, revolutionizes narrative theory in the sense of appropriate this previously bourgeois space. In this sense, it becomes almost impossible to carry out a critical analysis of his work and Brazilian literature as a whole, without problematizing the aesthetic and political relationships involved in literature.O presente trabalho propõe-se a analisar a relação política e estética na obra de Lima Barreto, mais especificamente nas obras O cemitério dos Vivos(2018), Diário Íntimo(2018) e Diário do Hospício(2018).

    No full text
Recently, mode-division multiplexing (MDM) has been investigated in transmission systems and optical access networks for capacity enhancement. In this paper, recent progress in MDM optical passive networks (PON) enabled by low-modal crosstalk few-mode fibers (FMFs) and optical components is reviewed. All-fiber mode multiplexer/demultiplexers (MUX/DeMUX) composed of mode-selective couplers (MSCs) are introduced to simultaneously multiplex or demultiplex multiple modes. Few-mode circulators (FMCs) are employed to realize bidirectional MDM-PON transmission. Direct detection without complex multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) digital signal processing (DSP) is applied. Moreover, multidimensional PONs by cascading MDM optical distribution network (ODN) with conventional time-division multiplexing (TDM) and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) ODNs are proposed and experimentally demonstrated.CPCI-S(ISTP)1013

When referring to social networks and Digital Information and Communication Technologies (DICTs), we can talk about Web 2.0 or the second generation of services available on the internet that has been providing collaborative practices on the Web and from innovative contexts, the YouTube platform emerges as a facilitator and interactive aggregator, in the context of video lessons available on the platform. The study aimed to analyze the contributions of YouTube videos to the teaching and learning process off the content covered with students of state school system in the city Ouro Preto – MG, middle school (9th grade) students and high school (1st grade) students. Data was collected from a questionnaire with mixed questions that traced the socio -demographic profile of the sample, composed of individuals aged between 14 and 16 years, with a predominance of female and brown students. It worked considering the content proposed by Bardin (2011) and the assumptions addressed by the author, then three categories emerged: “The perception of middle school (9th grade) and high school (1st grade) students on the YouTube platform”, “Pedagogical mediation and the influence of DICTs in this process” and “Audiovisual technologies associated with production devices, reproduction and manipulation of content: The case of the YouTube platform”. Results indicate that the researched subjects considered the YouTube platform as a fundamental resource in their education process, recognising the aspects that transform it into a virtual learning environment and the configuration of those lessons available, which contributes to the subjects predilection for videos. It’s noticeable that teachers of the researched subjects use this resource as part of the teaching process when considering pedagogical mediation and the influence of DICTs in this process” and “Audiovisual technologies associated with production devices, reproduction and manipulation of content: The case of the YouTube platform”. Results indicate that the researched subjects consider the YouTube platform as a fundamental resource in their education process, recognise aspects that transform it into a virtual learning environment and understand the configuration of video the lessons available, which contributes to the subjects predilection for videos. It’s noticeable that teachers of the researched use this resource as part of the teaching process when considering pedagogical mediation actions which are essential in demystifying the concept of digital natives and that the family institution is inserted in the process when referring to DICTs. Regarding the most searched disciplines in the platform, we verified the predominance of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. It was noted that students had a preference for researching and watching the video lessons available on their smartphones and that they prefered to keep up with these videos at home. The results of this study can subsidize new teaching methodologies that favor the teaching and learning process in order to contribute to improve the teacher-student relationship, favoring a collective, democratic and meaningful use of social networks such as the YouTube platform, but we ponder the importance of pedagogical mediation in this process, because depending on the practices instituted or instinctive, the video classes can reaffirm practices centered on the teacher speaking

Unsupervised Model Selection for Time-series Anomaly Detection

    No full text
Anomaly detection in time-series has a wide range of practical applications. While numerous anomaly detection methods have been proposed in the literature, a recent survey concluded that no single method is the most accurate across various datasets. To make matters worse, anomaly labels are scarce and rarely available in practice. The practical problem of selecting the most accurate model for a given dataset without labels has received little attention in the literature. This paper answers this question i.e. Given an unlabeled dataset and a set of candidate anomaly detectors, how can we select the most accurate model? To this end, we identify three classes of surrogate (unsupervised) metrics, namely, prediction error, model centrality, and performance on injected synthetic anomalies, and show that some metrics are highly correlated with standard supervised anomaly detection performance metrics such as the F1F_1 score, but to varying degrees. We formulate metric combination with multiple imperfect surrogate metrics as a robust rank aggregation problem. We then provide theoretical justification behind the proposed approach. Large-scale experiments on multiple real-world datasets demonstrate that our proposed unsupervised approach is as effective as selecting the most accurate model based on partially labeled data.Comment: Accepted at International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR) 2023 with a notable-top-25% recommendation.
