Filter and control performance bounds in the presence of model uncertainties with aerospace applications

    No full text
This thesis establishes performance properties for approximate filters and controllers that are designed on the basis of approximate dynamic system representations. These performance properties provide a theoretical justification for the widespread application of approximate filters and controllers in the common situation where system models are not known with complete certainty. This research also provides useful tools for approximate filter designs, which are applied to hybrid filtering of uncertain nonlinear systems. As a contribution towards applications, this thesis also investigates air traffic separation control in the presence of measurement uncertainties

Automated centralised separation management with onboard decision support

    No full text
This paper proposes a novel automated separation\ud management concept in which onboard decision\ud support is integrated within a centralised\ud air traffic separation management system. The\ud onboard decision support system involves a decentralised\ud separation manager that can overrule\ud air traffic management instructions under certain\ud circumstances. This approach allows the\ud advantages of both centralised and decentralised\ud concepts to be combined (and disadvantages of\ud each separation management approach to be mitigated).\ud Simulation studies are used to illustrate\ud the potential benefits of the combined separation\ud management concept

Relative entropy rate based design for linear hybrid system models

    No full text
Hybrid system representations have been applied to many challenging modeling situations. In these hybrid system representations, a mixture of continuous and discrete states is used to capture the dominating behavioural features of a nonlinear, possible uncertain, model under approximation. Unfortunately, the problem of how to best design a suitable hybrid system model has not yet been fully addressed. This paper proposes a new joint state measurement relative entropy rate based approach for this design purpose. Design examples and simulation studies are presented which highlight the benefits of our proposed design approaches

Relative entropy rate based model selection for linear hybrid system filters of uncertain nonlinear systems

    No full text
Hybrid system representations have been exploited in a number of challenging modelling situations, including situations where the original nonlinear dynamics are too complex (or too imprecisely known) to be directly filtered. Unfortunately, the question of how to best design suitable hybrid system models has not yet been fully addressed, particularly in the situations involving model uncertainty. This paper proposes a novel joint state-measurement relative entropy rate based approach for design of hybrid system filters in the presence of (parameterised) model uncertainty. We also present a design approach suitable for suboptimal hybrid system filters. The benefits of our proposed approaches are illustrated through design examples and simulation studies

Sufficiently informative measurements for stability of approximate conditional mean estimates

    No full text
This paper establishes sufficient conditions to bound the error in perturbed conditional mean estimates derived from a perturbed model (only the scalar case is shown in this paper but a similar result is expected to hold for the vector case). The results established here extend recent stability results on approximating information state filter recursions to stability results on the approximate conditional mean estimates. The presented filter stability results provide bounds for a wide variety of model error situations

Aircraft automation tasks requiring switching control

A key feature in future aircraft operations will be automation of various aircraft processes, such as air traffic separation management and the management of forced landing events. Automated versions of these processes will often involve consideration of multiple modes of operations and hence require consideration of automated decision processes able to switch between various available modes of operations. This paper proposes a switching algorithm on the basis of max-min decision theory. This algorithm is particularly suitable in situations where each operational mode has access to different set of partial information. We apply our proposed algorithm to the air traffic separation management problem. A simulation study is presented that illustrates the performance of the proposed switching algorithm

Practical stability of approximating discrete-time filters with respect to model mismatch

    No full text
This paper establishes practical stability results for an important range of approximate discrete-time filtering problems involving mismatch between the true system and the approximating filter model. Practical stability is established in the sense of an asymptotic bound on the amount of bias introduced by the model approximation. Our analysis applies to a wide range of estimation problems and justifies the common practice of approximating intractable infinite dimensional nonlinear filters by simpler computationally tractable filters

Control of infrastructure inspection aircraft vertical dynamics in the presence of thermal disturbances

    No full text
The low-altitude aircraft inspection of powerlines, or other linear infrastructure networks, is emerging as an important application requiring specialised control technologies. Despite some recent advances in automated control related to this application, control of the underactuated aircraft vertical dynamics has not been completely achieved, especially in the presence of thermal disturbances. Rejection of thermal disturbances represents a key challenge to the control of inspection aircraft due to the underactuated nature of the dynamics and specified speed, altitude, and pitch constraints. This paper proposes a new vertical controller consisting of a backstepping elevator controller with feedforward-feedback throttle controller. The performance of our proposed approach is evaluated against two existing candidate controllers

Practical stability of approximating discrete-time filters with respect to model mismatch using relative entropy concepts

    No full text
This paper establishes practical stability results for an important range of approximate discrete-time filtering problems involving mismatch between the true system and the approximating filter model. Using local consistency assumption, the practical stability established is in the sense of an asymptotic bound on the amount of bias introduced by the model approximation. Significantly, these practical stability results do not require the approximating model to be of the same model type as the true system. Our analysis applies to a wide range of estimation problems and justifies the common practice of approximating intractable infinite dimensional nonlinear filters by simpler computationally tractable filters
