    Aim of the present article is to critically evaluate the effects of the large diffusion of soybean on the international market concerning aspects related to the evolution of soybean trade, the effects on agricultural systems where soybean cannot be cultivated, the present dependence from soybean of intensive animal farming systems and the consequences on small or medium farms applying not-intensive animal production chains. An experience under way in the Marche Region (Central Italy) will also be illustrated as an attempt to make agricultural activity both profitable and integrated within local soil and climatic characteristics

    Molecular marker analysis of genetic variation characterizing a grasspea (Lathyrus sativus L.) collection from central Italy.

    Abstract Levels of genetic similarity characterizing 20 grasspea (Lathyrus sativus L.) populations collected in central Italy (17 populations in the Marche region and three populations in the Abruzzo region) were analysed with amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) molecular markers. Two main clusters were found: one included large-seeded populations from farms that were not market-oriented (named Household populations) and the second, small-seeded populations, cultivated in market-oriented farms (named Commercial populations). Relationships among populations collected in different regions were found, although one population of the Abruzzo region was placed between the two main clusters, suggesting a possible further genetic differentiation within this grasspea germplasm collection. Principal component analysis based on AFLP marker frequency was effective in identifying polymorphic markers showing high discriminating ability between clusters H and C. In particular, seven markers showing high positive and three markers with low negative PC1 scores showed an almost cluster-specific distribution. These results will be useful for enhancing Italian grasspea germplasm use in plant-breeding programmes and for extending grasspea cultivation within the sustainable agricultural systems of central Italy

    ABSTRACT. Grasspea is an interesting crop for rational crop rotations in inner areas of the Marche Region. However, breeding efforts are needed to improve its agronomic performance and to lower as much as possible the neuro-active amino acid β-ODAP in the seeds. Since the year 2000, a germplasm collection and evaluation program has been carried out. Accessions were evaluated by field trials for morphological and agronomic traits and for seed β-ODAP content. Significant variability was detected. In particular, populations collected in local farms showed a higher seed production compared with unadapted accessions. β-ODAP content varied between 0.26% and 0.53%. Moreover, AFLP molecular markers were applied to investigate genetic variation characterizing the populations included in the collection. In the year 2008 a breeding plan was started using two household populations, one with the lowest average β-ODAP content and one with the highest agronomic performance. Based on these results, a within population analysis for this trait will be started using the accession with the lowest β-ODAP content. Interesting information was also gathered using AFLP molecular markers, since a wide range of genetic variation supported the possibility of starting a mapping project aimed at the identification of genes of the biochemical pathway for β-ODAP
